A Stroll Along the Rue Du Bac

A 17-minute stroll along the entire length of the Rue du Bac in the charming Seventh Arrondissement of Paris. This street is a very nice street with practically no tourist traffic. Lots of shops and cafés and restaurants, and mostly local residents. Shot in almost one continuous take, hand-held, on a very nice day at the end of August. The street extends from the Bon Marché department store all the way to the Seine River, and this video covers its entire length.

I was supposed to go back to Paris this May 2020, but obviously due to that COVID-19, I have to stay home instead. I just wanted to say thank you to you Mxsmanic, because of your videos, I feel like I'm back again, hearing the noise of the street, people talking, seeing the cafés again. Me inventé una ruta para peregrinar desde el Museo de Orsay hasta la Capilla de Nuestra Señora de la Medalla Milagrosa. Es un alivio al llegar a Saint Germain y seguir la estrecha y elegante Rue Du Bac. Por supuesto que hacemos algunas compras en el trayecto, como en Magna Carta, donde venden cuadernos, diarios, colores y otras cosas preciosas. Compras que cierran con broche de oro en Le Bon Marché y en Etam, después de haber visitado a Nuestra Señora de la Medalla Milagrosa. En la Rue du Bac también vivieron Flora Tristan y Carlos Marx. Very good job, as usual. In just about all of Robert Ludlum's novels, something always seems to be happening on the rue du Bac. So one day I decided to walk it just to see. Nice area.

@ingridhjones The rue de Babylone is the first cross street seen in the video, at 01:54. The rue de Verneuil is visible considerably later, at 14:38. It is further north and much closer to the river. They are probably about equal in terms of desirability as a place to stay.

@VideoDave2 Yes, this camera (a small Sony Handycam) has optical stabilization, and it's "active," meaning that it tries to anticipate regular movements. This makes the image even more stable, although sometimes the stabilization anticipates incorrectly and you see a sudden shift in the image as it corrects itself. The sudden shifts are usually vertical but sometimes horizontal pans will cause them as well.

I'm not sure which Paris you visited, but the one in which I live is clean, thanks to cleaners who remove all the garbage and wash the streets regularly (especially early in the morning). There's an increasing number of homeless people, but that is mainly due to the depression. Illegal vendors and pickpockets are mostly restricted to touristy areas (although there are lots and lots of touristy areas in Paris).

I love your videos. Your comments about narrow sidewalks, while well intentioned, do not reflect the sentiments of people who actually live there. You are walking through, doing your thing filming. Residents and visitors seem to manage if you watch them in the videos. and narrow sidewalks are only on less traveled streets.

I am probably going to go for the apartment on Rue de Verneuil simply as I should not be spending too much of my precious time in Paris at La Grande Epicerie - my always HAVE TO go to place where I spend a ridiculous amount of time and equally money (but it is sooo good) - and being near the river makes all the other things I plan to do on this trip easier. At the moment am trying to decide whether to stay on Rue de Babylone or on Rue de Verneuil, and I have just walked between the two with your video...still cannot decide on which one...would you recomend one more than the other? You can't walk very far anywhere in Paris without passing some sort of religious site, but the Chapel of the Miraculous Medal is one of the better-known sites on this particular street.

@idram7 I live in Paris. I'm occasionally hassled or assaulted for filming. These days people are extremely paranoid about cameras, even if they think you're a tourist.

Actually at least two people audibly complained on the video. Many people incorrectly believe that it's illegal to shoot video on a public street. Thank goodness, they are wrong.
