Meningitis in Students - what you need to know. The second most at risk age group for contracting meningitis are 15-24 year olds. Tom's story proves how quickly meningitis can strike, how important it is to know the signs and symptoms and what emergency action to take.
For the signs and symptoms of meningitis - www.meningitisnow.org/signs
NOTE: The information on the MenC vaccine is now out of date. There is a new vaccine available to young people called the MenACWY vaccine. This vaccine provides protection against four strains of meningococcal disease - A, C, W and Y.
Find out more information about the MenACWY vaccine - www.meningitisnow.org/meningi...
----
Meningitis can strike quickly and kill within hours. Make sure you know the signs and symptoms and seek urgent medical help if concerned.
Meningitis facts for young people -
One in four 15 - 19 year olds carry meningococcal bacteria that can cause meningitis in the back of their throats, compared to one in ten of the UK population.
You can be a carrier without becoming ill and in most cases it will help boost your natural immunity. In an age group where more people are carrying the bacteria, there will be more disease.
Meningococcal bacteria are passed from person to person by coughing, sneezing and intimate kissing. Increased social interaction in this age group means that the bacteria can be passed on more easily.
Why are first year university students at risk?
Students can be more vulnerable to meningitis because of living in cramped housing, or halls of residence. In many cases, young people come together from all over the world to live in one place and can be exposed to bacteria and viruses their bodies have not met before. This is why so many new students get ‘fresher’s flu’.
As the early symptoms of meningitis can disguise themselves as other things, such as common illnesses like flu, or maybe a hangover, it’s easy to mistake meningitis for something else.
When students go off to university, it is often the first time they are living away from their parents and, more often than not, their own health and well being is not a priority. With no parents to keep an eye on their health, meningitis can get missed.

Good Lord , for some reason I just didn't expect to see something like that here ... how naive of me . I am so sorry you lost your son and he should have had his whole life ahead of him . I hope you will see our responses and prayers for you and your boy ... I hope that you will find some comfort in our thoughts for you both . As a mother with a grown son ; I do not want to have to imagine what this is like . May the pain of his loss be replaced by many wonderful memories .

@Syrene Anderson … I don’t believe that, why would God write a book on when you should die ? I mean seriously, so children that die in a car accident God wrote that book ? That would make God cruel… I could drink poison and die right now, did God write that ? Or did my free will make a choice ? I’m not denying God could exist, very possible, but I highly doubt your life has a book that ends because God chose it to … Seeing children die of cancer isn’t something God would write ….

I was a survivor of meningitis with no visible signs of the disease's savage body destruction. But it also causes brain related problems. I suffer from hearing issues, visual issues, and metal setbacks. But I thank God for the doctors in germany who were so quick to treat me at 3 months old. They were very persistent and treated me without knowing the diagnoses, just treating me for the worst "just in case." That judgement call saved my life.

When i was around 8 years old i was sick with a flu like fever and throwing up. My mom decided to do the routinely temperature check, and it showed 42.9. So my she called my dad who rushed over and rushed me to the hospital cause i was basically too sick to even speak or have any reaction at all. The doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong at start (had no rash or any sort of meningitis symptoms but they were absolutely sure that it was the cause. They were getting ready to do a spinal tap but decided that it was too unsafe to even give me sedatives (at that point my temperature fell to 42.2. "At 43 there is normally death or severe brain damage, and 44 is almost certainly death) It took 5 doctors and my dad to hold me down as i instantly got filled with adrenaline due to hearing that the needle was going to be put in my backbone. After that i spent 3 weeks in a hospital bed being in a trance like state the whole time. Mid way through the 3rd week i did start to get better, and i could eat and drink by myself at the end of the 3rd week. Later i was told that i was an extraordinary example of survival both due to the fact that i could react with such force even when having 42.2 degree fever just by hearing about a needle + they couldn't figure out which meningitis i had so they gave me a so called "Shotgun cure" that can cure a wide range of untypical meningitis, the downside is tho that you can only use it once. After that 1 use, no other cures will work. As you can guess i survived the damn thing. Healthy as ever with no side effects other than almost being immune to antibiotics due to the fact that i was given several times more antibiotics over that one month than most normal people get in a lifetime ! So please take any symptoms very seriously! This thing can and will kill if possible !

I find it almost unbelievable that my grandmother finished raising all her 10 children into adulthood over 50 years ago… her nearest medical centre was almost eight hours away. All her children were born at home and never got vaccinated. Sundays were always eventful. Thousands of people would come from the hamlets for miles around into the village to attend mass and do the weekly shopping. When I was growing up I remember mass was so crowded and hot with people standing in the isles with no room for kneeling… I had trouble staying awake through the mass. On Sundays, the whole village turned into a sea of people; the marketplace was almost impossible to navigate because of how crowded it got. Even the park was overcrowded with people catching up with the latest goss. All the shops had large reception halls that turned into mosh pits. When I was very young there were rumours of polio, but it was extremely rare… I never knew of anybody who got it. My mother said she knew two villagers who got it. When I was growing up, the village had a bus service with 5 buses servicing the two neared cities… oh boy were they crowded, with people riding on top of the bus, and some riding the ladders… sometimes I think it’s a miracle I made it into adulthood

I used to live in saudi arabia and one day I had a really bad headache and apparently I just stayed in bed the whole day. I didn't realise because I was so tired and wasn't really aware. Then my mum and dad took me to the hospital because I had a really high fever. It turned out I had meningitis. I was only 7 at this time so I had no idea what that was. I asked my parents if I was going to die but they said no I just have a little fever. Well that "little fever" meant that I had to stay in hospital for 10 days while my brother, sister and dad went to Europe while my mum stayed with me. But the worst part was when they took me to my room for the first time my brother sister and dad came in as well. I asked if they would see me tomorrow and mum said yes. However, the next day when I asked where they were my mum said they couldn't see me until I was out of hospital. But in the end when I got out I got a cinderella barbie doll so I was pretty happy.

Why do doctors misdiagnose meningitis if it's that common? I contracted mild septacaemia last year, started as a splitting headache, I thought hangover, I drank the night before and was fine on the monday went to lectures, practicals etc. Tuesday however I woke with the slightest sore throat, it didn't bother me, but little did I know I had a blood infection which my body wasn't fighting properly, I went to every contact hour of the day and went back to halls and manage half a plate of pasta before calling it a night. At around 11:55pm that night I could feel my body shaking and teeth chattering and my head was pounding like there was something inside my skull wanting to get out. I sat up and took more pain killers, but that only spiked my fever and five minutes later, I went in my en suite and sat near the toilet on the floor, while my body shook uncontrollably, I thought "shit I'm in deep trouble here, I need to get someone in my flat's attention now!" At this point, it was like I was drunk and my coordination was totaled and I was cross legging as I walked to the kitchen where my flatmates were and I groggily told them, "Can you like call someone, I need medical attention?" They told me they're getting someone from first aid to come up the flat, then they suggested that I head to the sofa and I didn't get that far, I collapsed and fell into unconsciousness as my body got even hotter that I could hear my flat mate who came to my aid and said "he's burning up, this is crazy, we need to get *****" other flatmate name anonymous, she come out and took one look at my unconscious self and immediately rang an ambulance, they took me in and they pumped me with antibiotics for 4 days straight and I had to be on two sets of antibiotics for a week afterwards to clear it, but it was blood poisoning and had I not emerged from my room to "brave it out", they would've definitely found me dead in my bed or in the en suite slumped against the wall near the toilet.

Meningitis is not that common, there are not even 200,000 cases a year classifying it as a rare disease. It is misdiagnosed fairly infrequently, but when it is misdiagnosed it is often due to the disease still being in its early stages (though it does progress quickly). Until the DIC appear it really looks like any generalized infection. High fever, headache, stiff joints/neck, & vomiting are the first symptoms to appear. With just that it is very hard to make an accurate diagnosis. Once the DIC have appeared it is quite obvious, but unfortunately that is fairly late and the survival rate is much lower, sometimes as low as 10%. Most patients do not come in until this late stage (which can come on in just a few hours).
@ObsoleteMule
@ObsoleteMule 7 жыл бұрын
alex lily Ah ok that makes it less reassuring no wonder my Accommodation office was urging every new student to get the Meningitis vaccine, I thought it was a little more common than that, also I thought it's noticeable that you have it, but doing research and your information proved me wrong, I had minor Septicaemia last year and they pumped a lot of antibiotics in me and because of this I improved quite quickly. Someone in the late stage I've seen accounts of people that had to have limbs amputated, brain damaged or it took their lives. I stand corrected.

glad to hear you recovered so quickly, that must have been scary. when i first entered college we all had to get the meningitis vaccine before living in the dorms. i assumed that meant it was common, but I soon learned that the vaccine was due to the disease's high transmission rate, not frequency. i too have seen the effects of late stage meningitis, its so sad and sudden. again, very happy to hear you recovered from septicaemia so well. cheers.
@ObsoleteMule
@ObsoleteMule 7 жыл бұрын
alex lily What was scary was it was only a sore throat to begin with and as the day progressed I became hot and cold, flu like symptoms and towards the evening I lost all appetite. I went to bed and had I not come stumbling out to the kitchen where everyone in my flat were pre-drinking, I probably would've not woken up or something. I knew when I was taking pain killers and drinking a lot of fluids and having an intense headache that I tried sleeping off that something was going on, that's when I stumbled into the kitchen and alerted my flatmates to call an ambulance before passing out on the floor.

Glad to hear you made it. My granny died from Sepsis last month. The doctors at one hospital totally missed it in her bloodwork. The next hospital we took her to admitted her immediately and figured it out. She was too far gone though and the meds they gave her that helped were shutting her organs down. She passed away June 6th at about 8:30 PM. We were all in the room with her as she went. These infections are awful. Please be careful out there and always get checked out if you think something is wrong. My granny may have been saved if she got help sooner.

^ precisely. it transmits easily as it is an airborne disease. packing students like sardines into dorms rooms puts them in very close quarters & the buildings usually have bad air inflow, so one student getting meningitis makes the rest of the building high risk.
