Great video. I've Always been pretty sure i had seen its only official broadcast here in the uk but doubted myself so just looked it up and found that it was shown on BBC 1 (London) on the 9th june 1978 at 8.10, so i haven't been dreaming it all these years. I'd Love to see an official release. All this talk of "Its not the image of Elvis we want the public to see" Well i think a large number of the public DO want to see it. Lisa Marie did state that in her lifetime this '77 TV Special will never be officially released. I wonder upon her untimely passing whether that now will change? Personally I agree that this is a period in Elvis' career which shouldn't be ignored. Officially releasing a limited number for die hard fans would be the right thing to do.

Hello, from London, Ontario, Canada. I discovered your content today. I am Some Old Elvis Fan too. LOL. I recall enjoying the CBS TV Special on October 3rd, 1977. I viewed the show in my bedroom, by myself, the first time it aired on TV. The following week, the Special aired on TV again, I heard because of popular demand, and the second time my Mom, and I shared the viewing experience. We were the two Elvis fans in our household. She was 40 years old, and I was 14 years old. Great memories. Rest in peace, Mom [1937 to 2022]. Your presentation is the one of the best reviews I have seen on the subject of Elvis' professional career of 1977. I am glad you mentioned the "legal issues" relating to the June 20th, 1977 concert of Lincoln, which was not filmed. For years following Elvis' passing, negative reviews of the show, and misguided rumours were spread about the show and the reasons why film recordings didn't exist. I never attended an Elvis Concert. However, many Elvis fans of London, Ontario, Canada attended Elvis's shows during the 1970s. I am fortunate to have a good friend who attended Elvis concerts between 1974 and 1977. Thank you for reading my long post here. I love Elvis, and I am grateful for his contribution to the Entertainment, and Music Industries. Please advise where to buy the book you review in the video. For all it's a difficult watch as he isn't very well bless him, but he came on and sang his heart out, there is nothing wrong with his vocals, and he joked around as always, I wish they would release it as well and the same with Elvis on Tour, with the new film he is gaining young fans and it's a perfect time to release extra footage. Great video Duncan, yes l think the last concerts should be officially released. I know that it is hard to watch the last concert. Both concerts are already on KZbin anyway, mostly in mediocre quality at best. So it would make sense to remake the special with HD footage and latest editing skills for public release. It could be a success and would show Elvis in a much better light than what the original broadcast special offered. But emphasis should be on editing to bring out the best of what's available of Elvis at that time. Oh if only they would include me or other serious fans in their editing team. I'd happily do it for free.

I want a DVD/Blu ray release of all footage shot for the CBS Special. He put on a hell of a show at Rapid City and he sounded great at Omaha even if he looks drowsy. It doesn't matter to me it's Elvis. Are we saying actors and ETA are more acceptable than the real Elvis? The estate argument is any release would be food for the critics as Elvis wasn't at his best that doesn't hold water all the footage is on KZbin in poor quality and it's viewable to all haters and critics included. It hasn't harmed Elvis reputation. What EPE want is the perfect Elvis image to sell products. The image. Not the real deal. The Elvis of 1977 is the real deal.

As sad as some of it may be, I enjoy watching the Elvis 1977 Cbs Special. As an Elvis Fan, since I was 8 years old, now 31, it makes me hunger for more. I wish that he definitely would have lived longer, to do more shows. I also wish that more footage, or complete footage of; Elvis On Tour 1972, would be released also. Us Elvis fans are starving for more unseen footage, and music.

@@someoldelvisguy2331 I agree, but any new fans that the new Elvis movie might have brought with it, almost won't know anything about this footage, unless their parents, grandparents, etc... Tells them about it. Let's just hope somehow, the footage will see the light of day soon. How long can footage be kept stored in those film cans, and not deteriorate? Someone has to play them some time, or something. They have to be kept in working order, I would think. Maybe that's why we haven't seen the other concert footage. Maybe those films are ruined. 😔

I've been a harcore fan since before he died but let's not kid ourselves.Elvis's voice still had power and certain songs stood out but a lot were sad to see and hear he was far from his best.When compared to 50s Elvis 68 or 1970 for example the difference is obvious.He was way overweight and in poor health sometimes struggling,slurring his lyrics and forgetting words.Take for example 68,70 and 77 versions of Are you lonesome tonight you see the difference and to me it's one reason the Elvis "concert" where the band reunited with Elvis on the big screen didn't have any songs from the 77 CBS in it.

Fully agree , the performances are indeed stunning. Most of the photos that are a part of the box are from June tour and not really the special itself with a exception of a few (4- 5 photos) the makeup artist that was a part of the cbs crew did a very poor job and actually made Elvis look worse regretfully. but the shows in the special are amazing though. To see the cbs special in prestine quality would be a wish come true… just watch the love me footage from this is elvis and you already can tell elvis looks better when the quality of the footage is better as well….

I totally agree Mijndert. The quality of the This is Elvis CBS footage, shows just what it could look like. I like the fact that the photos from the June tour, show that Elvis didn’t actually look as bad as the aired special portrays. Even a quietly released FTD release might be a way to get it out to fans in decent quality. I do feel that Elvis gave his all for his fans, and EPE are stopping us seeing this final gift in its best light. Thanks for watching!

FYI-for who ever doesn’t know this mElvis was not “fat” in this time of his life he was bloated because he had a genetic condition that his mother and Lisa Marie RIP 🙏🏼 also had. He had a twisted colon which made it difficult to move his bowls and because of this he would become bloated. This was something he was born with and was told that it got so bad that he would need a colostomy bag and he would not do that. If you watch all the different concerts from 77 sometimes he is bloated and sometimes not because if his body worked correctly the bloating would go away . Because of this condition he was in unbearable pain and that’s why he seemed strange because he was on heavy pain killers in order to preform for his fans. It wasn’t his use of prescription drugs that killed him he had many health issues that were painful to him not to mention Priscilla leaving him and taking Lisa Marie to California which also had a big impact on him sending him into a dark spiral down ward.

Have you ever read the book “The Strange Medical Saga of Elvis Presley” by Forest Tennant . It goes into a good level of detail medically and I found it an interesting read.

​@@someoldelvisguy2331 yes I have that book too. It should be mandatory reading for all fans, and any journalist who is considering writing something about Elvis. Even though it is becoming more generally well known that Elvis had health problems, not DRUG problems, uninformed people still talk about "fat Elvis" and I always lash out in his defence. When I saw him in November 1976 he was a magnificent example of a man in the prime of his life, great physique, tall dark and handsome. My photos from the concert prove it.

I was born in 1980 but my mother always told me when he would come on the radio I would start to dance in my play pen 😂😂 my parents asked my in 1989 if I wanted to go to Disney or Graceland obviously I choose Graceland !!!!! And Ive always loved him and am very protective of him. I don’t think it’s only his talent that attracts ppl to him but also just seeing and hearing abt the unbelievable generosity he showed to everyone around him and strangers . He had a way about him that showed he would be loyal to his family friends and fans and do anything he could just to make someone’s life a little better which defiantly is a RARE Trait to find these days. I’ve never heard of that book I will defiantly pick it up thx for the suggestion. I watched a video yesterday of Charlie Hodge making a speech abt all the health issues he had but I did see another interview with Charlie Hodge where he says that in 1970 Elvis told him he had bone cancer !!!! I’ve never read it I know it came out in 1976 and he was unimaginably hurt by this. Why was this done to him for money and by people he knew almost his hole life…very sad….you saw him in 76 your so lucky I was born to late 1980 wow what an amazing experience ( lucky 😃) if u could send me some of the pics u mentioned I would love to see them !!!!!😃😃

The book is also outstanding in its presentation and quality with so much information it will be hard pressed for FTD to do any better??

Maybe at this point it wouldn't hurt to have this released, but the younger fans don't realize what it was like 45 years ago or even 25. Elvis' last couple years the media was bad mouthing him about his weight and uneven performances etc. Some woman even predicted he'd be dead by the end of 1977. After he indeed died, a few weeks later the CBS Special came out, which began the decades long ridicule and jokes about Elvis and how he looked. There's an infamous episode of In Living Color with a skit about Elvis being spotted in the woods like Bigfoot. and he's like 300 lbs and in a jumpsuit. It was funny at the time, but as an Elvis fan it hurt too. For a long time due to that concert being shown, it gave mockers the material they needed to show Elvis as they claimed. Don't blame older Elvis fans for being on the fence about it being released in full, just as that BS is kinda behind him now.

I can absolutely see both sides of the issue, and as someone who remembers the kind of ridicule that happened in the late 70s and early 80s, I don’t want to see that return. I just wonder if there might be a way forward now, after the context the Baz movie gave, by putting this special in the proper narrative, which seems to have garnered sympathy for Elvis rather than the ridicule we saw before. I bought the 1977 CBS special on vinyl in 1989 and it sounded great but when I saw the concert footage on you tube years later I was very upset by Elvis decline while watching it , he was stumbling over his words quite clearly stoned out of his head on medication but other concerts on the tour that were filmed he wasn't as bad maybe clever editing could achieve the desired effect? I read that this concert was not going to be aired ,CBS deemed it was not fit for viewing they were going to film him again on another tour hoping he'd be in better condition but the fact Elvis died not long after they then decided to air it .

I think you’re right DMC, it was definitely edited in light of Elvis passing away. I read that as well that CBS had planned to film another concert as they didn’t plan to use these. When you look at some of the 8mm footage of 1977 concerts and photos taken then, he did often look better than he does in the special as aired. Thanks for watching, and taking the time to comment!

In my opinion only the audio from Rapid city should be released....is the best concert from that tour. Making this footage an official release will not make justice on him....specially the Omaha show. I'll rather have very good 8mm footage from very good shows even up to 1976 than having these two shows in pristine quality.

I was pretty disappointed with this release. The footage is poor compared to what's been available on The Final Curtain set... even the third or fourth generation footage on youtube is better than what's on this set. The book is very nice but I bought it for the footage. It'll sit on the shelf but I'll rarely take it out...

How does if compare to The Final Curtain?

I’m not sure there’s much or any improvement in picture quality over final curtain. I’d need to watch final curtain again. This set only has the special that was aired, and some extras like the more recent interview with the producer. The 2 separate concerts Omaha and Rapid City that are on final curtain are not on this set. I think the audio cd of the special in this set, is an improvement over previous releases.
