damn, this video went in every direction! Something else that you did not mention, and that I just recently learned about, is that when it comes to privacy, smartphones are absolutely terrible. Especially location privacy. You have no root access, the bootloader is locked, most phones have oem lock (which is baiscally a lock to prevent unlocking your bootloader), and on top a lot of phones are also locked by sim carriers. All of this for "security" yet you absolutely must do the (what feels like) monthly security updates otherwise you open yourself to threats. What enrages me the most about this (other than the fact that who knows if the devices are "only" locked and not also infiltrated with some other tracking software by the manufacturer), is that android is built on Linux, the MOST secure system that exists. PC Linux distros are notorious for security to the point that antiviruses are never needed. Anyway, what I actually wanted to say before being sidetracked is that all smartphones are equipped with mobile antennas that constantly search for mobile signal by default, and that your precise location can be triangulated with only 4 antenna connections. Additionally, every connection is uniquely identifiable to your sim card, and what is the only document you are required to provide when you get a new SIM?.... Your ID!!! So your provider 24/7 knows where you are located :/ get blackpilled

I think stock Android vs iPhone is like Democrats vs Republicans. Your choice is basically evil vs slightly less evil and which is which depends on your most tightly held beliefs.

Android is more like a parliamentary system though... There's technically a lot more options although ultimately labor and the conservatives predominate.

Funny enough I also have two phones, a Pixel 4a and an iPhone SE 2nd gen, only my main is my iPhone because my family uses only iPhones and iMessage and FaceTime. Hopefully one day, we could avail of encrypted messaging working cross platform. I agree with all that you say. For me if it was not for iMessage and FaceTime I’ll probably be using stock android on the Pixel 4a, and I used the 4a as my main with grapheneos for almost an entire year.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what would replace my Pixel 4a. There's nothing left on the market with that size besides the ZenFone. But even that is a lot heavier. And the Zenfone 10 doesn't allow for unlocking the bootloader apparently anymore.

For me apple's closed eco system is just a deal breaker. I would only consider buying an apple device if it's a machine dedicated for something specific and I don't use it for anything else like digital art on an ipad. but for anything else the closed eco system is a deal breaker.

If you turn on loudspeaker during the call, the proximity sensor (which turns off the display) becomes inactive or way less sensitive.

Even with the loudspeaker I still sometimes have issues (though usually less often). I've even had issues with the Bluetooth headphones on during a call once or twice.

imo the argument of apps not available in ios is really not a problem with apple or even iOS. Its more like the developers didn't care to create one for iOS
@TheNewOil
@TheNewOil Жыл бұрын
That's semi fair. It's also worth noting creating an iOS app requires a $100/year investment while Google - I'm told - is $25, so there are legitimate barriers to entry that are higher with iOS.

Thank you for sharing your experience using stock Android and iOS. Like you, I have reason to use both mobile OSes. I disagree with your conclusion that there is no clear winner when it comes to privacy, however. I think iOS is the clear winner because Apple engages in significantly less tracking than Google and offers end-to-end encryption (which Apple dubs "Advanced Data Protection") with most iCloud data (whereas Google does not with Google Drive). With respect to security, which to some extent you conflated with privacy in this video, I think iOS is also the clear winner with the introduction of Lockdown Mode.
@TheNewOil
@TheNewOil Жыл бұрын
Fair arguments. Regarding privacy, one of the sources I cited argues that Apple does indeed collect the same data that Google does, and as I noted both companies have been sued for lying about their data collection practices. At the end of the day though, we really have no way to know with any certainty. While Android is more open, stock Android is not fully open source and therefore with neither OS can we be 100% sure exactly what they are or aren't collecting. We can only take their words for it, and again, both companies have been proven liars, so it's really a matter of who you trust more. As for ADP and Lockdown Mode, definitely 100% fair arguments there. I overlooked both of those and should've at least given them a mention. It's probably fair to say that iOS with Lockdown Mode enabled would definitely be more secure than Android. Personally I never had any issues with Lockdown Mode on, but some users may. (As for cloud stuff, I don't advise using either cloud, even with E2EE enabled, so that's why I completely forgot to even touch on that.) Thanks for the feedback!

@@TheNewOil Another privacy advantage for iOS is the by default availability of end-to-end encryption for texts and calls to other iOS users via Messages and FaceTime. This makes it possible to communicate privately with many people whom might be difficult to persuade to install secure messaging apps like Signal.

Haha the timing. iOS 16.4 just fixed your update frustration...today 😬 I'm sorry to hear the speaker doesn't work well on your 6a. I had considered it as a backup phone but i'll probably get a 7 for my test device.

iPhone hardware is supreme though I need Pixel for GrapheneOS, I actually really dislike Google Pixels. I would REALLY prefer something like the S23 or iPhone 14 sized, Pixels are just massive phones with underperforming. Though I actually don't hate Google as much as I use to. They are undoubtedly evil, but they do support a lot of open source projects, like Android for example. Google pushed for mass fiber internet adoption. Generally Google isn't that bad, but they CERTAINLY aren't good. Samsung is worse, I just like their phones more. I actually think Microsoft is the worst in my eyes, its fairly easy to isolate yourself from Facebook but their the worst morally in my eyes, but not in impact.
@TheNewOil
@TheNewOil Жыл бұрын
I would argue it's very hard to isolate yourself from Facebook, given everything we've learned about the Meta Pixel and shadow profiles. But as I said in the video, everyone has their own opinions. They're all awful companies.

Will Neo store work on Android 8? At least Neo has automatic updates. Are you able to move to a custom OS that's using a more recent OS, at least? I have a Lineage device for testing purposes that recently moved to Android 13.
