Hey Jess- I started some melon seeds last year by making a decent sized (tennis ball ish) of just good dirt. This way it's like its own seed block/ball. It stayed together and I just planted it out at planting time with great success!! There is no root disturbance this way and it gives the seedlings a head start.Just make sure the soil is mud pie moisture level to get the dirt ball to stay together.

Leeks are so easy to grow, just plant them out like onions and they love nitrogen just like onions. I have some growing in my raised beds that I direct seeded in the fall. They are very cold hardy so you might like growing them through winter and they can be harvested in April through May and most of June. Like most alliums they don't like the heat of summer and will go to seed, letting some go to seed isn't a bad thing though. We really like leek and potato soup, it's so good in the winter months. You can blanch and freeze for future use or freeze dry, they don't turn out so good dehydrated.

That ROCK thing. Yeah, I got that too. YEARS ago, (57 now), I took a field trip in the 4th or 5th grade to the State Capitol in Arkansas. I don't remember anything but the box of rocks I brought back. It had all these interesting rocks that are found all over Arkansas. To this day, I still pick up interesting rocks. Even though I've been transplanted since 19 to Tennessee, I still keep interesting rocks. That's SO FUNNY that you mentioned that. Seeds, sticks from soil, silaca packs and ROCKS! Guilty! I'm proud to say though, I have never washed a pack of seeds. YET.

In my experience, leek roots are resilient. You can spread all the seeds from your packet into one container without cells to separate them, and then when they are ready, just pull them out individually and tease the roots apart.

I follow an organic gardener in Arizona. Her hack for keeping pillbugs from her garden vegetables is to place a half orange cut side down on top of the soil every couple of feet. The oranges pull the pill bugs away from the seedlings and bigger plants. May be worth a try.

I do that with the good rocks too! Which... Is kind of a problem since I live in Central Texas, aka - limestone country, where we obviously used to be under the ocean, and in my yard, there's more rocks than top soil ! We have LOTS of small fossils. Most of the rocks I find make me wonder what kind of animal they used to be! The result of me picking up "the good rocks" is a very large pile of them on top of my garden work table! They're always in the way, and I have a hard time setting them free... I try to justify my good rock pile by stacking them, in that zen kind of way, where they are balancing on top of each other. So at least 3 times a week I get to center myself enough to do this task. Afterall, I already have "the good rocks" each patiently waiting their turn! Rocks ARE very patient objects of art! And they help me be more patient too.
@RealBradMiller7 ай бұрын
I enjoyed this comment. I want to admire your pile of good rocks! I am currently digging out medium sized rocks to cover them with moss. They are Ssssssoooooo smooth I can't not touch them though! @@RealBradMiller Awwww, glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for telling me too! It's really nice to hear! You've made my day to know we both enjoy the subject together! I'll be remembering you when I stack my good rocks today! And your rocks sound AMAZING!! The smoothies are SO satisfying, aren't they!! And MOSS!!! Whooo Hooooo!! I WISH I could grow moss! You're so lucky to have moss!! Right now, it's just too dry here to grow moss... We're in the 3rd year of a drought. (Droughts are common here.) Altho, now that I think about it... We do have the "Sometimes Waterfall" nearby which DOES grow moss on its walls when it rains! (The creek feeding this tall waterfall dries up between rain events.) But when it DOES rain!!! I go there to be surrounded by ferns and moss growing out of the tall limestone cliff which creates the water falling. That's when the "Sometimes Waterfall", is the "Right Now Waterfall" !! It's nice that rocks don't die bcuz I didn't water them! Altho... the drier they get, they do change color. So there's THAT !
