Really great insight into Ireland’s history! Few things I’d add or alter but main thing is that during the famine Irish farmers had smaller plots of land and so the most beneficial way to use the land was the potato so when the potato became diseased the other crops being grown in Ireland, barley etc, were exported by the English whilst the Irish population starved to death and resulted in Ireland’s population halving.

Seeing streets named after Cromwell on these lands disturbs me so much. May we one day see a united Ireland after all the struggle and suffering. It's interesting as well that Irish republicanism was founded by Protestants like Wolfe Tone who had strong moral foundations. Wonderful introduction video to the history of Ireland, I'd be really interested in seeing a more detailed one too!

The Irish had a written language called Ogham Before they change to the Latin alphabet. Ogham (/ˈɒɡəm/ OG-əm,[4] Modern Irish: [ˈoː(ə)mˠ]; Middle Irish: ogum, ogom, later ogam [ˈɔɣəmˠ][5][6]) is an Early Medieval alphabet used primarily to write the early Irish language (in the "orthodox" inscriptions, 4th to 6th centuries CE), and later the Old Irish language (scholastic ogham, 6th to 9th centuries).

Fantastic video, as always! That intro, I think, is still an issue. It's nice and fun (for your fans like me!), but probably too long and too amateur-looking for new viewers. I anticipate a lot of potential viewers click away before seeing the top-tier work making up the bulk of the show. I clicked away the first time for this very reason. Fortunately, I still really wanted to know about Ethiopia ;)

The north east did not choose to "stay" in the UK. The Republic could not liberate it and the Treaty signed for independence was only for the 26 counties in the south as there would be more war which Ireland at that point would not win if they decided to fight for the entire Nation of 32 counties.

One reason there was no food in Ireland during the potato blight was that the British EXPORTED the food that was in Ireland at the time. Many countries experienced the very same potato blight but only Ireland experienced mass deaths. This is something the British themselves acknowledge.

I am from Clonmel and The siege of Clonmel took place between 27 April and 18 May 1650, during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland when the town of Clonmel in County Tipperary was besieged by Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army. Cromwell's 8,000 men eventually took the town from its 2,000 Irish defenders, but not before they suffered losses of around 2,000 soldiers. Most were killed after being caught in a trap by Hugh Dubh ("Black Hugh") O'Neill on 17 May 1650.
@justinneill5003
@justinneill5003 10 ай бұрын
Yes I like to think of Hugh Dubh as a distant ancestor (who knows?!) All I know is that my more recent paternal ancestors arrived in Liverpool from Ireland, driven by necessity, possibly around the time of the Great Famine. Hugh was a fascinating character, and his clever tactic at Clonmel was no accident; he was a professional soldier, a veteran of the Eighty Years War fighting for the Spanish Army in Flanders. Born in Brussels, he was part of the O'Neill dynasty which had left Ireland for the continent during the Flight of the Earls, and returned with 300 officers under the command of his uncle, Owen Roe O'Neill, to support the Irish Rebellion.

ISLE OF MAN So I noticed you're making all of these in alphabetical order.... and I'm guessing that you're going off a list of "every country" from google, which more than likely doesn't include the isle of man. Therefore you're probably not gonna make it (even though it should be next), but it would be awesome if you did. No it is not part of the UK.

Few facts the Anglo-Normans as the video rightfully points out never conquered the whole island, infact they only conquered a small areas notably the pale. But with the breaking of the treaty of Windsor even the pale was rightfully Irish land, and King henry and his successors were never lord of ireland because they broke the treaty.

They hadn't control over their own country thats why. Even if they did fish it would not have been enough to support a population of 8million.The traditional fishing boats like currachs and hookers would not have been sufficient and commercial fisheries would have had to step in ,which wouldn't have been commercially and would have needed to be subsidised by the british government who as i alluded to above didn't care about the Irish
