Ironically, that is exactly how much ancestry from Ireland I have from my Dad's side. The rest is German. Mom has a bit of Ulster Irish ancestry with her main heritage being...English. Also, Dad's family is Catholic, Mom's is Protestant (Baptist). But since I'm from the states, I always say I'm half-Missouri, half-Louisiana.

And? You’d be surprised what gets passed down, in differing degrees depending on location, with that amount of heritage. On my moms side I have a lot more Irish heritage (probably adding up to a 1/4) but no one really has anything Irish other than looks. On my dads side there’s a lot less Irish but we know there were some and oddly a lot of it has been passed down because they lived in a very isolated rural area. My family there still eats a lot of old Irish inspired meals (I had to trace them because some of them were definitely unusual for the area). If people are using their heritage to learn about other countries and other people isn’t that a good thing? Everyone talks about how Americans are ignorant (which, granted, many are) and yet get annoyed when we make an effort to be less so. Frankly I find very few international groups make any effort to understand American culture (I have never met an American who says they are from Ireland, only that they are “Irish “ in ancestry) and it only makes Americans less willing to look beyond their tiny piece of the earth. And I say this as an American making every effort to move out of this country XD

Some notes on the Irish language: - It is called Gaeilge - The Ó prefix in names is for males and for females changes to Ní - There is no singular word for yes/no - The communities who do speak it are known as Gaeltachts and students will go there to practice during the summer (big deal) - All signs and government docs must be issued in English and Gaeilge - And finally, it is NOT similar to English so stop saying the pronunciations are stupid or weird, it is LITERALLY a different language!! Given the amount of hardships and suffering the irish has endured historically (and still do to some extent), the fact that the irish today is the, by far, friendliest and most polite people I've ever met, is a testament to the amazing irish spirit. Originally, Irish surnames never had prefixes but then clans started splitting up and people started using names like “Mac Conchobhair” which means “Son of Conchobhair” and the grandson and all generations coming after that are called “Ó Conchobhair” which means “descendant of Conchobhair”. The prefix “Mac” was kept by some for some reason though. The Nic prefix is the female equivalent to Mac and Ní is the female equivalent to Ó, whenever a woman gets married, she will change the prefix to “Uí” and her surname to her husband's surname. The British came so everyone with an anglicized surname just uses the “Mc” or “O” prefix

6:40 It’s kind of the same in Finland, where the Christian missionaries and other religious folks tried to Christianize our summer solstice _(”Ukon vakat”_ or ”Ukko’s bushels”), which was a very pagan holiday and involved lots of drinking and sacrificing beer to _”Ukko Ylijumala”_ (our supreme deity), but they only really managed to change the name into _”juhannus”_ (”St. John’s Day”). The drinking stayed, and is still a key part of our summer solstice (/midsummer). 🇫🇮🍻🇮🇪

To any visitor to Ireland, they got the weather wrong. There are about 150 wet days (days with any amount of rain) on the east coast and 225 wet days on the west coast. And those wet days are spread fairly evenly throughout the year. There aren't any dry months here. The joke goes like this: the difference between Summer and Winter in Ireland is that in the Summer, the rain is a litttle bit warmer. Also it's a bit expensive here, about €4 - €5 for a beer. And we don't all drink Guinness. :)

This problem we share with many northern and cold countries such as Russia, Scandanavia and Poland. Many of these countries , such as Norway and Sweden have restricted alcohol sales and heavy taxes on drink. Others have State industries which almost encourage heavy drinking. Ireland has liberalised the supply and sale of drink and reduced many taxes and opened to market to many new sources such as supermarkets and petrol stations fro the sale of alcohol. While this is very convenient it has led to many problems with excessive alcohol consumption in Ireland.
