This is so difficult to watch but makes me feel so proud that we have men such as these.

The Medal of Honor is the biggest honor you can achieve for heroism. It was created during the Civil War. You should watch Hacksw Ridge. Desmond Doss's story is one of incredible valor.

So very tragic, yet, so proud of Chapman. Amazing that there are people who would do this. He actually laid down his life for his brothers. 🇺🇸 May he rest in peace.

The motto of the Air Force Pararescue Jumpers is "That others may live". In other words you're willing to give up your life for that of another. He probably knew he was dead and sacrificed himself to keep his brethren alive. May you Rest in Peace Chapman.

I have watched this video about a dozen times and it still chokes me up every time I see it.

Thanks for posting your own initial reaction to this amazing story of a true hero. It was just as difficult to watch the second time.

Of the dozens of times I've seen this, it's always just as hard to watch. What's sad is, for years, the navy buried this story until one of the seals on this mission could receive the MOH as well. Partly because Chapman was left on the summits. I'm not judging that he was left. Things had gone terribly and fog of war is certainly a thing. Also, there is a rumor of a movie in the works about Chapman. Much love Recky!

They didn’t say whether they retrieved his body or not. Knowing the motto, “No man left behind”, I assume they went back for him. Poor John. What a hero. RIP

I believe they did go back again. After the chopper was shot down, others came in to get them out as well. Then another attempt was made, by foot, starting further down the mountain, to recover the two men.

Originally he was awarded the Air Force Cross/Distinguished Service Cross for Extraordinary Heroism (2nd highest commendation in the US Armed Forces), it was not until 2018 his actions was more recognized then upgraded to the Medal of Honor.

It is impossible to not feel a flood of emotion watching that. John was the epitome of a Navy SEAL. I have seen this a few times and I use to have to stop and regather myself. Now, I let the tears come. Thanks Recky!

It's simple, when you see his name, when you see this video. You stop, you watch, you cry, and you think the Lord that we are free, because men like these have given it all.

The US has real super hero's American Badasses

The real tragedy about all this is the seal team leader lie about how all this happened was awarded the metal of honor that’s why the US Navy tried to cover this up when the Air Force released this video, had this video never been released John’s sacrifice would have gone unnoticed. I bought John’s book Alone at Dawn and have watched videos of retired special forces talking about this very issue and why the navy did what they did.
