Msgt Chapman is an absolute hero and greatest special ops guys ever! PO1 Roberts was also cut from the same cloth, may they both rest in Valhalla seated next to our King. Thanks to them and all others in this operation who fought and died to recover their brother and friend.

I was serving in Air Force when this mission took place. All the Air Force heard about this, and it became part of our Air Force history. His actions I can say are beyond heroic, but legendary and a miracle in what he did. Chapman was Air Force Combat Controller the serve alongside of other special forces to include Pararescue whose motto is "So that others may live."

The book about him is really good. Reading about his determination and that of his comrades helped me through US Army OSUT. He left behind a wife and 2 young daughters. He's a true hero.

Clarification: This wasn’t the first medal - it actually goes back to the 1800s, rather this was the first time that the qualifying actions for one were caught on camera. The Medal of Honor is, more or less, the American equivalent of your Victoria Cross.

I'm glad you showed your mother this video. This man's actions are the way I was taught to act too. To me these are values handed down to us from our british cousins long ago and if more men lived up to this our societies in England & the US would be far better places. You are lucky to have such a beautiful on the inside and outside mother that from what I can tell is a wonderful woman. This unaltered footage is actually quite clear in showing the fighting, but it was of course not released because of its graphic nature. Its also said that the Naval Special Warfare Command (NAVSPECWAR) attempted to block Chapman's MOH given it would imply they the SEALs had left behind a wounded comrade. SEAL leadership failed in that regard, so they nominated one of their own SEALs who was present during the battle to receive an MOH of his own.

MSgt Chapman was initially awarded the Air Force Cross, the second-highest award for someone in the US Air Force. Years later, advances in technology allowed a deeper analysis of the video seen in this reaction, which lead Secretary of the Air Force Deborah James to push for Chapman's Air Force Cross to be upgraded to the Medal of Honor. The Navy tried to block this action because it would reflect poorly on the Navy SEALs, who pretty obviously left him for dead. But, the Navy had to save face, and also upgraded the Navy Cross that was awarded to the leader of the mission, Master Chief Britt Slabinski, to a Medal of Honor.

As an Air Force vet I have strong feelings about how the SEALs left him behind to die, then fought to get their own team leader a Medal of Honor. The Naval Special Warfare Command fought against Chapman's medal because they didn't want to admit they left him behind. Not a fan of the SEALs.

The worst part is that you have to keep in mind that Chapman is in the Air Force, he was there to aid in a recovery of a Navy SEAL with a SEAL team, they never once checked on him to see if he was alive or not, they in fact hid most of the time and let Chapman do the fighting for them. Once they got hit, they got their own dead SEAL and abandoned him there. But it gets worse... the Navy claimed the SEAL leader did everything Chapman did and awarded HIM the Medal of Honor for the actions Chapman did. They claimed they checked on Chapman on the way down and he was already dead, which was a lie. The Navy blocked this video for years and tried to make Chapman look like a coward. The Air Force had to force this to come to light to give Chapman the credit he deserved. They never took back the Medal of Honor the SEAL captain got for what Chapman did.

After WW1 Unknown Soldiers of Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy, and Rumania [Romania] all are listed as Recipients of the Medal of Honor. This is the only time members of a foreign country's military have been awarded the Medal of Honor. Thank You for your service brothers/sisters of foreign wars!

The Medal of Honor (MoH) is the equivalent to the Victoria Cross. Sometimes referred to,, incorrectly, as the "Congressional MoH" because it is presented " in the name of Congress and the American people". Oh, and as a veteran, please do not say, " won." Believe me, it ain't a competition. " Awarded" or "received " is more accurate.

The congressional medal of honor has to be voted to pass unanimously through congress for the president to be authorized to award the medal and present it to either the family of the recipient or the rare cases the recipient survives his medal of honor action it is presented to the serviceman himself at a ceremony in the hall of heroes in the pentagon in DC itself

What statute is that in? I believe 19 people have received more than One medal Of Honor. The last was given in WW2, but it is still possible to be awarded more than one. The only limitation is that you can't receive more than one for the same incident. But in this incident two different people received a Medal of Honor.

@@ptournas The statute was enacted shortly after WWI. Marine Dan Daly was the last person to be awarded the medal twice. He was denied the third by law. Only two people have received more than one.

@@lp1293 Dan Daly earned his second medal in an action in 1915. Five other Marines earned 2 Medals of Honor for actions in 1918 during WW2. In the same action that Dan Daly earned his second medal for, Marine Smedley Butler also won his second Medal of Honor. In the Navy general order 319, August 1917 is the recommendation for Butler's second medal. It contains the following paragraph: "Gunnery Sergt. Daniel Daly, Fifteenth Company, during the operations was the most conspicuous figure among the enlisted personnel." Daly's reccomendation obviously came after that. The confusion about the fact that there were more than two Marines who received the Medal of Honor may stem from that any branch of the military could award the medal to any other branch. Marines were often also awarded the Army and Air Force Medals of Honor in actions they took coordinating in battles with these other branches. Sources that claim there were only two Marines who won two Medal of Honor are only referring to the Navy Medal of Honor. Some of the Marines double recipients actually received awards from both the Army and Navy for the same action. I believe this practice is no longer allowed, along with the practice of allow two Medals of Honor for the same action, which ended in 2004. However, there has never been a military rule, or a statute of law, limiting the number of Medals of Honor that can be awarded for separate actions. In Daly's case, the third recommendation was from the Army, for the Army Medal of Honor. It was downgraded to the Army Distinguished Sevice Cross. The reason wasn't because of any law or statute. Speculation of the reason vary, from authorities thinking it was too many for one man, to rivalry between the Marines and the Navy branches.

This might sound terrible but after I got out of the Navy I had a "spot of time" where cocaine was very fun, I got busted and spent 6 months in jail then 13 months in prison butbi learned how to make spread. First you bust up some ramen noodles and cook em with enough water to blow em up but have minimum moisture, then you add mayo, hot sauce, and chopped up slim Jim's. Then you let the heat kinda cook the slim Jim's and start crushing up whatever flavor potato chip you want it to taste like, dump the chips and shake the bag really hard and you got 2500 calories each for 4 guys so it'll keep you fed, maybe not the best way but it'll keep you from atrophy. Don't do crimes and you won't have to worry about trading the vitamin c packs you get for food.

He only earned one MoH, and even were it possible to earn two he would only have earned one for this single combat action. The way it's worded in this video is unfortunate. Until the early twentieth century it was possible to earn more than one MoH, but only for separate combat actions. By the mid-1920s the Department of Defense had amended the rules for the medal, ensuring that no servicemember could receive more than one MoH ever. Any subsequent valorous actions that rose to the level of the MoH would be downgraded automatically to the Distinguished Service Cross (or the Navy Cross for Marines and Sailors).
