Thanks mate, you’re saving me from a bad grade Update: I got a 6 (best grade in my country) and that was just enough to get me to a 6 in my report card. I cant believe it. You’re a life saver

Hey ThugNotes, I literally just finished Tale of Two Cities for the first time in my life. Yeah, I'm 38. I had a bad high school. Anyway I have this 100% fresh in my mind. You hit it dead on the head. Thanks for sharing this.

I’m 38 and just read it myself. It was… not great. My least favorite Dickens I’ve read, honestly if it wasn’t for the ending I think the book wouldn’t be nearly as well renowned. The ending really swooped in and saved it, for me at least.

I was so lost in the book and tried watching a video to understand it and that didn’t even help, but this, this made me understand everything cause there were no overly complicated words to try and sound fancy. Just straight hard facts.

Hey, Thug Notes - just finished this book FINALLY. Wrote a blog post about it, and then started thinking: Hey! What would Thug Notes say about this book? Love your summation and analysis. I'm going to do a follow-up post about book reviewers. I love your reviews. As a former English teacher (college freshmen), I wish I had had access to something like this to offer as an alternative to just the usual dry or even quirky academic or journalistic analysis. I get the sense you actually love literature. It comes across in your voice and your ability to get at right at the heart of a book. Thanks!

There is a thing called positive discrimination. It means that minorities are given some privileges so they don't go ape shit in the streets because they think they are being oppressed. And although one may argue can it be considered racism, it is certainly a form of discrimination.

Hey, hit some sci-fi with some heavy philosophy, do Starship Troopers. Your Dune was great!
@Serai39 жыл бұрын
Starship Troopers is "heavy philosophy" to you? Really?
@neilterry17269 жыл бұрын
Yes, really. "Heavy" in the sense of "gravitas" or "weighty", in that it involves real issues in ethics, politics, and society that have real and serious consequences for the human race. Philosophy with consequences. And "philosophy" in the sense of ethics, socio-political questions, and the meaning and worth of an individual's life and actions (which are all parts of "philosophy"). Not necessarily some Alpha-to-Omega theological worldview, or two dweebs taking hours to define their terms before having a scholarly debate about free will or whether one can prove his own existence. So yes, "heavy philosophy", not necessarily elaborate, esoteric, or hard to understand. Characters in the book ask questions regarding, and also make cases for: corporal punishment, capital punishment, the legitimate uses of force and war, the value of one's life vs other goals, the very nature of social human existence, and the practical requirements of that nature. Despite its military sci-fi plot, there is plenty of heavy stuff to think about in that book that falls under the banner of philosophy.
@Serai39 жыл бұрын
Neil Terry Hey, if the kind of "philosophy" found in books written for teens - which Starship Troopers is - then have at it. I prefer adult books, myself.
@neilterry17269 жыл бұрын
Yes, please, instead of considering any of the points I made about the book, just throw out an insult and say it's all kid stuff, as if there's never been any fiction that teens could understand that is worthy of your esteemed consideration. You sure showed me! Maybe 50 years ago, kids could handle thinking about issues that many people prefer to avoid these days. I like Umberto Eco too, but not everything has to have the approval of Academe or be a several hundred page exploration of the limits and nature of human knowledge to be philosophical, thank you very much, Mr Arrogant Shitbag.
@kirareilly36999 жыл бұрын
Neil Terry Ehh, if you boil it down it's just anti-soviet, facist propaganda that preached a message of nationalism. The idea of social responsibility should be to your fellow man, your neighbors, members of your respective church where applicable and so on, and NOT to your government or to the state. The ideas preached during the cold war era, not just by this book but even by politicians of the time are so far removed from anything approaching a pluralistic democracy. "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country."
