I love Thug Notes as much as the next, but this seems unreasonable. There's... like... 2 deep connections made. This would barely get an A in a senior level English class.

For the Jesus Christ allusion, you forgot page 107 where Hemmingway writes " 'Ay,' he said aloud. There is no translation for this word and perhaps it is just a noise such a man might make, involuntarily, feeling the nail go through his hands and into the wood." Boom. Hemmingway alludes to the crucifixion as Santiago rows to shore and sees the sharks.

At the end of the text it's only tourists that assume it was a shark. They are looking at the skeleton and ask a waiter what this is. He responds: "Tiburón, Eshark", meaning to explain what happened to the fish. The tourists then saysomething like: "I didn't know sharks could be so beautiful." Gives a whole new meaning to it maaan...

According to Hemingway himself, there actually was no hidden meaning in this book, it was just a story. However I really like the many ways people interpret it
@packingwithparker0789
@packingwithparker0789 11 ай бұрын
He can say there's no subtext to the story as much as he wants, but at the end of the day stories are communication and he chose to communicate this story for a reason. As a fisherman, I want to say that the descriptions are 100% accurate l, ad a lot of the words are literally just accurate description of what it looks like out there. But there's still meaning being conveyed, period. Santiago always equivicates his relationship with the marlin to that of a brother, and pontificate on whether the people back home even deserve to eat such a noble creature and he even wonders why he wants to get this fish so badly, he dmwondrs what drives him. Anyway, yeah hemmingway is being a silly Billy saying there's no meaning.

Another favorite quote from this book besides "A man can be destroyed, but not defeated," was "First you borrow, then you beg." Santiago was all about being self reliant even though he wasn't as strong as he used to be and his situation was pretty grim. Also thanks for your videos I know this was made 10 years ago but I watched these all the time in high school and still watch them for my personal literary study. Your summaries and analyses are amazing and concise.

Yo! It's been a long time since I read the book, but I keep thinking it's about a guy trying to regain his youth. He goes far out--we leave the womb/house/comfort--but eventually get ourselves tugged out a long way by circumstances. . .and the strength and virility of youth, clinging on to it. Shit takes its toll; the sharks. And by the time it's all done, no one believes you, as all that's left of it is tatters. Dig your interpretation too. More inspiring instead of sad.

Good analysis. Another major Christ-figure moment for Santiago is at the end, when he's struggling home with his mast, up the hill, like Jesus carrying the crosspost for his cross. Looks like they lost, but they overcame life and death, FTW. Peace.

LOL Fun fact: the hidden meaning of The Old Man and the Sea and Linkin Park's "In the End" are *exactly* the same! Santiago literally tried so hard and got so far! But in the end, it didn't even matter! He had to fall! To lose it all! But in the end, it didn't even matter! It was so unreal (what he did)! But he didn't look out below. He watched (three days) go right out the window. He tried to hold on, but didn't even know that he'd wasted it all just to watch (the fish) go! He got the entire thing inside (his boat), and even though he tried (to bring it to shore), it all fell apart! What it meant to him eventually was only a memory of a time when he... (you know the rest)! Yes, both are about how our effort and sacrifice often goes completely unnoticed and unrewarded!
