A tale of two DAWs: Worrall v. Harrison vs. Worrall v. Cockos
Recent developments in the Dan Worrall vs. Harrison Controversy bring to mind another occassion where Dan Worrall criticized a company, and I found a wee comparisson between the attitudes of the people behind these companies to be an illuminating case study.
Yes. I'm aware I missed a spot while shaving.
Watch Leandro's video on Cramped vs. Non-Cramped filters here:
• Computational Performa...
Hopefully you know where to find the rest. Dan Worrall needs no introduction and the other dude seems like the kinda person who would copyright claim out of spite.

Exactly! I initially talked about that part too but cut it cuz the vid was getting long. Reaper took 1 week to implement changes and we've all moved on. Harrison took one year to make a snide comment and 3 extra months to send a couple of PR-trained dudes to go on a talk show.

Harrison Mixbus isn't even their own DAW really, as far as I understand. It's pretty much a mod of the open-source DAW Ardour. _"Both projects are free software (GPL) sharing the code-base, however Harrison’s DSP is a proprietary plugin that is bundled with the binary"._ So you are paying for the mod. I have no problems with that, but it's one hell of an expensive mod (especially Mixbus32c). The fact that they try to excuse their exaggerated marketing claims with "our consoles are just as clean and precise as our plug-ins" is just laughable. They should know that most people who buy plug-ins like these know what the differences between analog modelled plug-ins and clean digital plug-ins are.

Nothing but excellent points here. I respected Cockos even more after reading Justin's blog post in response to Dan's video. My interactions with Beatskillz, Antelope Audio, and a host of other companies who won't own up to mistakes (or in some cases, like the eMastered ATOM "AI-powered" synth, have been pushing straight snake oil) make me value companies who are willing to listen to critiques and improve as a result.

I saw the ratio on the Lonely Rocker video and I weighed in. This was a marketing catastrophe for both Harrison and Lonely Rocker whose independence regarding Harrison products is now trashed. My comment on the LR video was fair and as my main source of income is as a marketing consultant I tried to explain what a disaster this was and that thy should pull it. In the response I got from LR he accused Dan of "sending an angry mob to attack a business" and earlier is his response to me he characterised them as being 'rabid' whilst denying he was being arrogant. I just don't think LR is used to being taken on and hopefully he is wiser and a bit more humble for it. I think he got carried away with whatever this new ambiguous relationship with Harrison is. Dan posted a short called "Not Cool" and it was perfect, he identified and disowned the nastier comments and he thanked those who posted constructively and LR responded quite well but again without taking responsibility for what most people were pissed off about. I hope there's no lasting damage to his channel, that wouldn't be fair, if Harrison have a marketing manager they need to be dealt with for allowing this to even happen. It was a predictable disaster. Cockos without much fanfare or making claims they can't back up are slowly becoming the market leader, they will be the industry standard in the near future and they deserve it, I've been a PC+Cubase user since since the pre PC Atari days but the 2 years it took them to be Silicone compliant and the worse than ever support forced me too look elsewhere and Reaper was the final choice. It's at the point now where I just got a new Mac and haven't even installed Cubase on this one.
@IDDQDSound
@IDDQDSound Жыл бұрын
Yeah very unfair of LR to criticize Dan, especially since he never really spoke about him, until that short where he came to his defense. Despite what I say in this video, I don't think the guy is evil or anything, and neither is anyone at Harrison. It just feels like they're in a hole and can't stop digging. I wish they would just say "the Gain-Q relationship of our EQ is perfectly matched to the rack unit" and that would be true and not in any way less impressive than the whole every transistor sentence :)

Very well put. The point here is the misleading marketing and Harrison’s inability to humbly admit they are wrong, not just factually as per product but ethically as per their lies. It’s made me think twice about what I’m buying. I’ve not got time (or the expertise) to test everything on Plugin Dr. so trust Dan’s scientific reviews. There’s no harm aiming for a bit of analogue saturation on some tracks through digital means , it’s cheaper and more space saving than buying a Revox R2R, but no one wants to be wasting money on rubbish that doesn’t distort as stated and May in fact introduce narly aliasing artefacts.

It beats the crap out of Pro Tools but not nearly as stable or ironed out. After 35 years on Pro Tools, working on what feels like a real console is a joy. And it sounds better too. But their claim about “every resistor and capacitor” and their defensive reaction to Dan’s review really upset me. They could do a lot better. Mixbus IS a very good DAW but still in Beta, if you want my honest opinion. They should be eager to get feedback and step up to the challenges that come with that.

Yes. Just because someone calls themselves a doctor doesn't mean anything, but someone who studies medicine for 12+ years certainly has a bigger claim to the title I'd think. Science makes mistakes, but I don't agree that the global science community is maliciously trying to call things they know is bad as good. There are some who do for money but it's not a majority.

I worked on a Harrison MR4 console back in the 80's. Loved the EQ and the routing on the console was a bit daunting. It had about the most surgical on-board EQ in the business at the time. That being said, ALL the EQ's that I currently have in my plugin bay blow that EQ away. I've always tried to get the truest, uncolored sound capture that I could achieve with the technology I had available. Little side-note. Dan Worrall (as far as I understand it) very well uses his ears for the first evaluation. But as he knows, the bias of having human senses, is a tricky thing, he then confirms or debunks the things he was or wasn't hearing. So it still goes if something sounds good but doesn't look good in an analyzer, he will also defend it. Great video with great points. Although amused and disappointed that you addressed all of the issues as a consumer and not as a scientist... while criticizing anti vaxxers who do the same. I once took a music class and got a D minus, so I guess I shouldn’t question any of the audio engineers claims about their plugins since I’m not an expert and they are.

The D minus comment was to indicate that a lot of the people who are against certain medicine don't actually have an interest nor expertise. If you're interested and just didn't score high on a test, your opinion matters. Also music is a subjective artistic endeavor. Science is anything but :)

The goons of audio don't realize it's not the 80s anymore and yes, you can mix with your ears and also with your eyes. You can rely on both those senses when mixing now since the tech behind it are now capable of giving you a fairly accurate representation of what's going on with your signals and or plugins.

Never go off of just your ears. But also be conscious of what scopes you’re using. Personally I find iOS garage bands 3band EQ to be infuriating and inaccurate results can occur based on the inputs. Definitely DO use scopes though because most of us doing this for fun or in the early stages don’t own good monitoring equipment, or can’t afford it

Nice. Btw, Harrison isn‘t perfect, I agree, but they do create some good stuff. You can get plenty of alternatives as well. A shame their best products are out of the reach of most people, which are their film mixing consoles(digital for over 20 years). I had moved on from Dans video 10 minutes after I‘d seen it. Why did they feel the need to make silly claims in front of experienced, knowledgeable engineers is beyond me.

What in the world is "cramping"? What would be the scientifically correct term for this phenomenon?
@IDDQDSound
@IDDQDSound Жыл бұрын
Cramping is the scientific term for this. As a filter approaches the nyquist frequency (samplerate/2) one side of the filter's Queue has to cramp in order to get back to 0dB at nyquist. Check out the linked video for a 3 hour video on it by my good buddy Leandro. He codes both types of filters in real time and you will learn lots by it!

How can I take this garbage seriously when you do not even have a console behind you?! And you yourself pointed out that one needs to use one's ears. You admitted you don't. So no console, the thing with meters, numbers, indicators etc. and no ears are far as I can tell, behind your hippie long hair. I myself have taped over the meters on my console, blacked out all numbers with a sharpie, super-glued my eyes shut and taped my finders together while I mix. On top of that I have corked my ears and locked myself in the shower while I mix to keep things real, and I question anyone who does anything differently for only that way is pure. ll jokes aside, very good video. For me the ironic crux here is this is a product of engineers and programmers who use scopes and measurement devices to design/model software on hardware.....they didn't 'use their ears' to model it. And beyond that if their claims and sales copy actually bore up to scrutiny when Dan lifted the hood for a look and called them out they wouldn't be so butt-hurt.

@@IDDQDSound Glenn Fricker did that a while back, and it impressed me so much I bought a copy. Sad to see them go so far off the reservation with the plugin that claims to encapsulate that sound for any DAW. I was debating buying it to use in Reaper, but oh no, after Dan's video and the various reactions and breakdowns of the aftermath, never. I'll renew my license when they add new features that I actually use. So far, that hasn't happened since v6, and they're on v8. They finally fixed the midi issues it inherited from Ardour in v7, but I use Reaper for initial tracking and to mix track folders. I just like the way final mixes of stems turn out with the way the interface works, and the summing is nice, but kinda tertiary, in terms of importance, but I like that, too, admittedly.
