Here we are in 2022 & we now know tribes in Africa do exactly this on a community level on Ibogaine and similar things are beginning to happen in a therapeutic context with respect to addiction, end-of-life anxiety & PTSD. I, for one, have some hope for enlightened applications towards social enhancement, understanding and meaning-making & wisdom seeking.

There are some questions and scruples that I have with the theory as stated. I don’t quite understand the difference in outcomes between a “naturally” and “synthetically/artificially” induced modification of consciousness. The end result is still the same in terms of the experience. The origin of the hallucinogenic substance, to me at least, is irrelevant compared to experience and to, as Pierre says, of the background and ritual making up the total transformation. Perhaps I’m over complicating this distinction. Adapting our society, or part of our society, to a “new tradition” that revolves around an institution administering a hallucinogenic substance to rectify our culture (i.e. to increase its educational potential, creative ability, interpersonal communication) and satisfy our spiritual fulfillment is what is proposed here. What is critical to the theory is the need for a Sacred Tradition/Ritual to never be subservient to any other reason for taking the substance (i.e. entertainment), thus it must be rigorous and well organized. Here in lies the problem: it seems paradoxical, to me anyway, to integrate a “new tradition” in general. Tradition is what is handed down to us; it is beyond our human limitations. How can one start this tradition in our modern society? It would be absurd to adopt the Eleusinian Mysteries for ourselves simply because that Tradition has been severed and cannot be passed down to us today, unfortunately. Regardless of our in-depth knowledge of this Rite it can never be reinstated because the order pertaining to it is broken beyond repair, and the chain of succession is severed. If we are to use the Mysteries as a model from which to build our own tradition the problem is no different; one still needs to build the tradition. To commingle various aspects of authentic Traditions in order to guide the experience of the individual would result in confusion; strict adherence to a single Orthodoxy is always essential. This does not mean that we cannot learn more about our own Tradition from other Traditions. Where would the mythos come from then if it would be wrong to appropriate or adapt another’s Tradition? It must be instilled to a high degree within a culture from genuine Revelation and nothing less than that. In short the theory does not account for the fact that a Tradition requires a Revelation from the Sacred; any system short of this qualification and claiming to be a Tradition is blasphemous. “. . . if he be a man of sense, he will make no change in anything which the oracle of Delphi, or Dodona, or the God Ammon, or any ancient tradition has sanctioned in whatever manner. . .” - Plato (Laws) “For no creature, howsoever rational and intellectual, is lighted of itself, but is lighted by participation of eternal Truth.” - St. Augustine “And unto thee have We revealed the Scripture with the Truth, confirming whatever Scripture was before it, and safeguarding it.” - Qur’ân v. 48 I’m also skeptical to the extent which participants in the Eleusinian Mysteries used drugs; they wouldn’t have needed a substance which induced chemical reactions in the brain for Grace is given outside human powers. To use the hallucinogenic transformation as a catalyst for true Mystical Vision, during the experience itself or afterwards through contemplation or participation in ritual, is faulty because Mystical Vision is totally independent upon the human. God is the sole dispenser of Grace, no exceptions. “Pardon me, O Jesus!
