A Terrier is Terrified of Irish Wolfhounds

Today a couple Irish Wolfhounds showed up to the park, and for whatever reason, a (possibly Fox Terrier) puppy flipped out and screamed bloody murder. The puppy's squeals were like ringing a dinner bell for several Huskies, so they ran up and then it became more chaotic. Luckily, a bunch of people were right there and they diffused the situation.
Then a Great Husky (Husky/Great Dane) wrestled with some huskies and a Sheltie tried to herd a submissive White Husky.
*There is no violence in this video. The puppy just got scared of a bunch of big dogs. This video exists in order to educate people about dog behavior at dog parks.*

That little beagle pup was already anxious before the wolfhound even got over there. When wolfie clumsily booped the beagle pup's butt, that's when all hell broke loose. The other dogs still weren't hurting the beagle pup, just trying to figure out wtf was going on and how to stop it.

true, there is a gap in the video, clearly to see at reduced speed ( 0.25), the pup likely had allready a confrontation with the black tanned little german shepperd, there is an unspoken order in any group of canins ( even random ones), the pup presumely broke that order and was called out therefor, it was a stupid idea to bring a pup , probable not fully socialized to other dogs, to a ' adult ' dog park, the IWH booping his butt would be as saying ' behave, take care of your manners, follow the rules', but the pup freaked out shouting ' i am innocent, done nothing wrong', that's the signal triggering other dogs saying, wtf is that youngster yelling, total nonsens to us, we know you were wrong .... anyhow the blacktanned g.s. wanted 'retaliation' for the 'humilation' done to him but was backed off by a sheltie/collie ? in a nutshell a theathrical reconstruction .... anyhow, the puppy was not at the right place

I agree absolutely... I have a little dog and she's a rescue... for months she would pee herself even if she heard a dog bark... I didn't want her to live a life of fear so I worked for months slowly introducing her smaller calm dogs and I have to emphasise calm... eventually I introduced her to larger dogs but again I made sure it was a controlled setting and the dogs were balanced... now?? She's a social butterfly and her best friends are a German Shepard, rottwieller and a samoyed... I did not care how long it took me , I found the right dogs to introduce her to and sometimes it was just being around a calm dog.... please dog owners it's takes patience and commitment and consistent but you will see results ... some people should not have dogs

@@Dannyboy1550 when did I say that? Never. They did absolutely nothing when the dog was panicking and drawing the others on to it. There seems to be no point in trying to have a conversation with you though because you're obviously one of those many people on the internet who twist what others say to make themselves 'right'. To introduce your dog to larger dogs, you start by introducing them to one dog who is used to being around smaller dogs and know how to act.

@@sunleo6161 - they weren't trying to hurt him, but the puppy needs compatible playmates. Being surrounded/dominated by a bunch of giant dogs - what good is that? It's neither fun nor a good learning experience. He needs to learn how to play by adult dog rules, and he'll get that by playing with a similar-sized adult dog or with a puppy who's already learned.

Your actually stupid. The park is only for large/medium dogs.. Most dog parks say that since they don’t want little dogs to do get “dominated”. Even though smaller dogs are just very dramatic... it’s also not a puppy it’s a adult beagle. The humans made the mistake of bringing a rat dog into a medium/large dog park. As you can see the smaller shelties are having a perfectly good time with the other dogs. They should know their dogs temperament before even bringing it to a dog park

Luke yeet if it’s a puppy, and smaller that 30 lbs, probably. It needs a positive experience with other dogs to help socialize and a smaller dog park might help. That being said, it depends on the dog. I’ve seen some small dogs absolute dominate large dogs and don’t mind the size difference. I’ve seen some that love large dogs and like the rough play. People need to know their dogs and how they react so they can provide them a safe social environment. Also sometimes dog parks aren’t meant for all dogs.

We really enjoy the dog park. We take our two labs there frequently. But this is the reason we tend to avoid large clusters of dogs in the park. If one dog yelps or shows fear, then all the other dogs start to pounce on that dog. Then a fight can break out. I don't blame the dogs--it's just dog behavior. But we usually walk around the park, meeting one or two other dogs at a time rather than hang out with large groups of people and dogs clustered together. We are lucky. We have access to a really large dog park where it's easy to avoid the large groups.

I get your point... We are almost always posted up at the farthest corner of the dog park; just watching people/&dogs wander bye. Small dogs are almost never a problem, in my experience. They just squeak bye and nobody pays attention to them. But when they go off, like here, it is scary. Nobody wants to see the worst of that encounter. Horrible stuff.

I am planning on adopting an Irish Wolfhound when I move onto property. Everything I have read is they are not a dog park candidate. It’s too risky. They are very nice dogs ( gentle giants) with other nice dogs but can quickly and efficiently dispatch a small dog in a moment because of a very high prey drive towards small fleeing animals. Also they are not fighters BUT if attacked they will react to quickly end they issue and with there incredible size and strength it likely would end badly for the other dog. That’s what I have learned from other owners and breeders.

You can teach them to not be that way. The Irish Wolfhound in the instance didn’t hurt or try hurting the dog. This Irish Wolfhound was very well and obedient. If you have a so called bad dog it’s because the training or no training is put forth. Irish Wolfhounds can hurt other dogs if not socialized and taught to not hurt smaller animals. Also you don’t just adopt a Irish Wolfhound you have a loyal, beautiful gentle giant family member. Also do more research because they are one of the best breeds to have because of there laid back and inquisitive personality. With gentle and strict training you can have an amazing wonderful behaved dog especially Irish Wolfhounds.

The best description of the Irish Wolfhound- "Gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked" They are indeed big babies around their family, but if someone threatens that family, they go into full protection mode, as they should. For consideration- Wolfies have a bite force of 400+ pounds. One of the few breeds that can run a wolf down and kill it- many can do one, but not the other - for example the heavy set breeds have the power but not the speed. The Irish Wolfhound is an exceptional breed, I will never be without them.

Owners treat their smaller dogs in an unfortunate way - missing their puppy socialisation windows because they are worried about them getting hurt. This leads to the nervous/anxious 'yappy dogs' are all so familiar with. Definitely kicked off the prey drive in the huskies with the squeals. Owners needs to pre-empt this and always have an exit strategy ready for their small dog.

Yep, like don't bring them into the dog park with the big dogs if they can't handle it.

Maybe people with large dogs should have them under better control, it cuts both ways and this was a puppy, there are a lot of big dog owners who are quite frankly assholes.

On my block there is a family with two Irish wolfshounds. Very friendly dogs. Yet they have no dogfriends. My GSD goes into flat pancake mode when they pass, my mix pit/JR acting like ‘what? I see no giants but lets walk faster’. And my little mutt, size chihuahua XL is the only one wagging her tail and sniffing those big boys. That’s her main defence: wagging tail, happy face, sitting down and looking cute.
