This husky is very fast, and always wants to be chased. Today she met her match when two greyhounds showed up to the dog park. '

As a owner of 2 greyhounds, this is half true. Mo is the big brother and is kinda fat. He never runs around outside (unless Reece is onto something) and he just loves the bed. Reece, is the little sister. She will jump up when she meets someone and loves to play. Sometimes she will do zoomies. Both are gentle and are are full of love.

Well, my ten year old greyhound still needs her daily walk to be 6-10km to be satisfied. Sure she will sleep even if we walk less, but she will get up every time I do and come whine at me if the walk we had was too short. A long daily walk + letting them run in a safe place at least 2-3 times a week is the key to her happiness.

It's illegal (in the UK anyway) for a greyhound who's had even one training session to chase to be off the lead without a muzzle. We've had them 30+ years and our current one is a blue called Buddy lol. No, it wasn't him! The muzzle is to stop them catching rabbits or cats or other small furry thing. They're usually brilliant with other dogs, _if_ they know what one is (remember they've been in kennels with greys and people. They think they're people. They're not the smartest breed!), and I brought up 4 kids alongside up to 3 hounds at any time and never had a moment's worry. They are a smashing breed. Though I prefer them to have a racing muzzle (the plastic one isn't bad per se, just heavier) made of basically metal wire. You can hardly see them and they are (if ex-racers) very much used to them. If anyone wants a 50 mph couch potato, who is essentially a cat in a dog suit, they're fantastic. 3 X 20 min walks a day (they're sprinters, not marathon runners) will keep them perfectly fit. If they fart a lot, change to grain free food. We only discovered with our latest that they can be gluten-intolerant. When we first had hounds we didn't really know what gluten-intolerance was, let alone that animals can get it! We've found food that costs more or less the same as ordinary "crunchies" so it's all good.

They would take a shorter route if they could. Their turning radius at speed is not great. They have the husky beat in a straight line but not in mobility/agility. My husky was never the fastest, but I have rarely seen a dog keep up with him in tight turns. I swear he could lick the ground when he turns around a tree at full sprint. Nearly vertical with the ground, throwing grass 10 feet up as he struggles to get some traction.
@psychobratt
@psychobratt 4 жыл бұрын
@@rundownaxe Wolves are the same way, they can very easily take sharp turns and that gives them the advantage when taking down their prey. I'm assuming the husky is able to do so because their agility and body types are similar to their wild cousins. Probably due to their endurance as well, they're strong dogs.

I fell in love with greyhounds when I was a kid in the early 70s. A neighbor of ours had 6 retired/rescued greyhounds and 1 irish wolfhound/greyhound mix named Thor. He owned about 2 acres of land, fenced it all in and built nice kennels for the dogs. My brother and I would go over 2 or 3 times a week and help him clean the kennels, feed, water and bathe the dogs...we'd play with the dogs after we were through. The greyhounds loved running of course and their favorite game was 'get the ball...the owner had rigged up an old pitching machine to throw balls for the dogs. That ball would shoot out and those dogs would fly. I loved to watch them run. Thor would fetch the balls my brother and I threw, he'd bring them back to us and then roll over so we could give him belly rubs for being such a good boy. Seeing these two brought back some very good memories...thank you.

Buddy and Holly are rescued greyhounds most likely from local breeding operations here in Kern County. Both were running loose as strays and were adopted after rescue. Although I am not certain of their prior lives, both are very well socialized but highly responsive to chase. They have turn-out muzzles on them only because they may “hunt” in a pack and practice that behavior with the other dogs, nipping a bit as they run. They are not generally aggressive, however. As with retired racing greyhounds, they were likely raised with their siblings for many months after birth; learning their behaviors through play and enjoying the company of other dogs and especially their human owners. These 45-MPH couch potatoes make “greyt” companions.

They love to run all the time. Especially in competition with 7 other greys. A pack “hunt” is the most natural think for greyhounds. @@mycawalters6841 I think its the attitude of the owner that makes racing sport good or bad. If the owner keeps the dogs in cages just to pull them out for racing day - yes, that's abuse. If they are loved pets and put on a track only to give them breed specific exercise, I guess it's a good thing. Exept for the risk of them getting hurt or breaking legs. But dogs can break legs while chasing a ball aswell, so... Personally, I think its good to give a Greyhound a good run from time to time. It just shouldn't be for price money, but only for fun.

Excellent filmmaking (camera work, editing, and scoring). The choice of a retention basin for the dog park created a NASCAR/IndyCar track for dogs. Great display of speed vs endurance. The dogs had a blast. Great video!

Last autumn my husband and I were out running, and as we were making our way through a residential neighbourhood, all sweaty and out of breath and struggling to keep pace, suddenly this greyhound came up alongside us and effortlessly floated along with a smile on his face, looking at us like: hey, nice try, you know, need some company? Man, those dogs!!

I've had ex racers that do this too. My current grey stops running, checks out where chasing dog is, then runs to them and the race starts over. Some Grey's never make it to track racing as they just want to run alongside the others.
