Thank you for this reminder. In our country people put their best clothes on when going to church. It is because you are going to visit the most important Person of your life. The clothes are to be modest unless you want to be given an extra one by the priest. We are recomanded to dress according to lithurgical calendar. But mostly people dress as confortably as they can, it is important to stay concentrared in church and not to disturb others concentrations.

This is my take on clothes. For as long as we are properly dressed, not too revealing or inappropriate, that is okay. Not everyone have the money to buy nice clothes with the economy today. Thank you! I love this!! Personally, Ive discovered shawls, large scarves, to wear over my shoulders with dresses, jeans, etc. It reminds me of Mary wearing her "long mantles." I love it. I feel so close to Mary, wearing a large scarf or shawl as I go about my day! I love this! Thank you! I "knew" this in my heart, but didnt "know" this in my mind! You know, Id like to add, I feel the same: What would God want me to wear today. In fact, most every day, I pick an outfit out, "without even thinking." Its like God is picking it for me. One day, I wondered where a funky matching sweater was. I couldnt find it. So I prayed to God, "Oh God, Id love that sweater....where would it be." I was drawn to an area of my closet, and rummaged through and there was that sweater! I do believe, that "style," if dressed for God, for HIS PURPOSE, for HIS LOVE, IS LIKE PUTTING ON GOD, ALL OVER US, AS WE DRESS. It helps us to be closer to Him, Mary, Jesus, St. Joseph and the Saints. Thank you!

This talk is so important and beautifully stated! Most “fashion”, especially these times, offends God…. Liturgical garments have been a part of human history from the earliest of times. I love to see the different vestments priests wear throughout the year. Since the whole community of believers is a holy priesthood through the sacrament of Baptism, why not dress keeping in mind liturgical colors? I think it shows effort, and love for Christ, that you keep these things in mind. When I was very young, I was taught to dress my best for Jesus….I mean, why wouldn’t you dress your best for the King of the universe? Definitely something to think about.

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you-you of little faith?” Matthew 6:25-30 It’s good to dress appropriately for mass but if you are spending all that time to pick the perfect clothing combination, with the “right” color and style and such, maybe you are putting a bit too much attention to something that doesn’t really require it. You’ll end up going to Church thinking about your appearance and you how you look to others, which isn’t what church should be about in my opinion.

Who says that she's wearing immodest clothing or an excess of expensive jewelry? She's just saying that one can match liturgical colors when wearing appropriate clothing for mass. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems as if you're disapproving of the topic in the video for a reason that wasn't even related to the video. I put the most effort in what I wear when I go to mass because I'm there to worship God. Although, a t-shirt and jeans or sweatpants are more comfortable to wear than a skirt, blouse, and cardigan combo, I choose to put a bit of effort when going to a place of worship and meet the Lord. My grandfather used to wear his best suits when going to Mass. We call it Sunday's best because God deserves our best effort (regardless of what one chooses to wear.)
@covonedigrano7491 Жыл бұрын
@@phoebea It’s good to put effort, but one must be aware *in what* are you putting that effort. In this case you are putting effort in clothes and your appearance, take a quick read of Matthew 6:25-31 and you’ll see what Jesus himself teaches us about worrying about clothing. It’s one thing to dress appropriately, I find it a bit excessive to go out of your way to find the “appropriate mass color-palette”, that’s not putting effort in spiritual matter but in material trivialities. God doesn’t care if you’re dressed in blue or brown or red at mass, and if you do care maybe you’re putting too much of your attention in the wrong place before and during mass, which is about God, not picking the “right color” of clothes.
@phoebea Жыл бұрын
Lillian says that wearing the liturgical colors helps remind her of the season. I don't see anything wrong with that. I don't get why people assume the worst when talking about clothing. Assuming other's scruples/sins is a sin, so unless someone specifically tells you that they're dressing for others/immodest reasons and not the Lord, I don't see there being grounds for such comments that assumes that the person is being sinful. For myself, I'm not into fashion, and I tend to wear jeans and a t-shirt during the weekdays. I don't even wear make-up unless it's to a very formal event. However, I always dress my best when going to Mass because I am entering God's house to worship him. I am reminded of the story of the man who went to a wedding banquet but was kicked out because he did not wear a wedding garment (Matthew 22.) I understand the spiritual meaning behind the story, but I also understand it as the man not showing reverence and being prepared when invited to the king's wedding. If Jesus is king, then I want to be prepared both spiritually (interiorly) and physically (exteriorly) to receive him. When I see the priest wear specific colored vestments according to the liturgical season I am reminded of the season, so I don't see anything wrong if a lay person also wears the same color to remind them of the liturgical season.
@covonedigrano7491 Жыл бұрын
@@phoebea I'm not saying that she's dressing for others or for immodest reasons, simply that we shouldn't worry so much about clothes and be so absorbed by our own appearance, especially before and during mass. Friars, nuns and priests all wear very simple clothes and often of the same color and for a reason, the jist of the video seems to imply that we shouldn't strive to be like them, but we should show off our personalities with our clothes to church. I don't think that's the right mindset to approach mass, it's not something that should be about us or showing our personalities. It's not a fashion show, and if you think you need a certain outfit to praise God properly I doubt it's the wrong outfit that is the problem. The spotlight shouldn't be on us before and during mass in my opinion, unlike this video seems to suggest. And my point wasn't to say thay she's sinning or to judge her, I wrote it just to underline that what she said it's simply bad advice, I don't see how this could help anyone, but I see a lot of reasons why this could make people more self absorbed.
@phoebea Жыл бұрын
@@covonedigrano7491 I disagree with the assumption that people wearing clothing to Mass is somehow a person's way of trying stand out, is all. Unless someone says that's what they're doing, you (nor I) know that is the case. As long as people are wearing appropriate clothing to Mass, I don't think I need to police/ask their reason behind wearing an outfit. Also, what people wear to Mass doesn't distract me from the Lord at all. I don't think that it's a sin to want to look presentable for the Lord. Dressing for Mass actually puts me in the mindset that what I'm participating in is serious and deserves reverence and my complete attention. Ex. Dressing up in jeans and a T-shirt (my regular wear) means I'm doing something ordinary, even mundane. But, when I dress more formally or put effort in my dress (like for Mass, weddings, baptisms, 1st Communions, confirmations, ordinations, or funerals) I know that what I'm participating in is more than just the ordinary. These occasions are important. I don't mind if you disagree with me. You're free to do so. However, please don't take offense to my disagreeing with you. I hope you enjoy your weekend. God bless!

the theology of the body is not my favorite because it (or its adherents) seems to sexualize everything. But i believe modesty is the appropriate everyday "habit" of someone who lives chastely. I became sad how immodestly women dress in short shorts or mid thigh length skirts or low cut or leggings or etc and decided to dress in a way that keeps in mind that we are at the Last Supper, the Foot of the Cross and the Resurrection at daily Mass, and to dress according to a traditional standard of modesty. Last time the Church stated a standard it was noted that no dress should be called modest that isn't well below the knee. Could be applied to pants too. I have never felt that short skirts are appropriate, i feel uncomfortable even seeing that. Long skirts are good for year round with appropriate under layers. Modesty in some ways starts at the clothing store (for me that's a thrift store), don't buy immodest clothes for yourself or your kids, shop for modest clothing. For children, modesty in dress, speech, actions etc is an age appropriate thing to learn when still too young for a more complete understanding of chastity.

I see where you’re coming from so here’s my thoughts on it: Mindfulness isn’t vanity. You’re not invisible, so whatever you do people are going to perceive you by how you present yourself. We have to be mindful of how we look to others because we shouldn’t be distracting or scandalous. I’ve been to churches where the youth and even their parents come to church like it’s a trip to Walmart; short shorts, pajama-like clothes, messy hair, see-through shirts, etc. I struggle through mass to not find that distracting. Normal “Sunday Best” isn’t distracting. Your eye looks and then moves on. Coco Chanel famously once said “Wear makeup, it’s so vain not to.” I always thought it funny bc people think of makeup as vain and if you wear a lot it’s also distracting, but it’s a point that a little bit of effort is actually modest. Scandalous is that outsiders think you have as little respect for the house of God as to not even bother presenting yourself to the altar nicely. It takes me as much thought and effort to dress in shorts for outdoor work or to put on a cheap dress from the closet for mass. It takes me 5 minutes to do my makeup bc I’ve been doing it for 35 years and it’s minimal. If someone showed up to a wedding in cut-off shorts you’d think them disrespectful. If someone showed up in a bathing suit to a State dinner you’d think them disrespectful. If someone shows up to church dressed inappropriately it could be perceived as disrespectful. You don’t have to look at you but other people do, so to paraphrase Coco Chanel, “Dress nicely when you go to church. It’s so vain not to.”
@covonedigrano7491 Жыл бұрын
@@wiiildfire I don't think I will take spiritual or moral advice from Coco Chanel of all people. Jesus told us not to worry about clothes, he sent the apostles out with a pair of sandals and just one dress, he criticised the Pharisees for they worried more about their appearance in the eyes of other people then about doing what is right. You see where this can easily become problematic. There is nothing wrong with going to church with any clothes as long as they are appropriate and modest, what we should worry about when going to mass is our heart, not what we are wearing.

You say “appropriate dress” and I guess the trouble is people having different opinions on what “appropriate” is. Your priest dresses for mass, in vestments that match the day, and it would be a sad day when they stop doing so because you think it’s vain. In a nutshell, other people see you, you’re not invisible, so show them that you have some respect for God and His church.

@@covonedigrano7491 I’m going to call you out, though, because Jesus’ issue with the Pharisees was them trying to put themselves as spiritually superior to others. I know you know that and misused scripture to make your point. A very Pharisee thing to do and dangerous thing to do.

Heavy disagree. How you explained you get ready for church and how you say you present yourself there in the past when the church was worth it's salt you would have actually been fined for that.

Interesting… and can we jump out of the norm and inspire people to smile and lift up their minds to higher things by employing cool modesty? this is an important topic! 🫡
