Did this show kill Star Wars? Well obviously not financially and commercially, Star Wars is going strong and will continue to do so. But I do believe the show was exceptionally insulting for people like me who want to see some amount of depth and substance to this IP and with it using characters from my childhood there's an extra layer of frustration. Obi-Wan killed Star Wars, metaphorically, for me... So join me in an in-depth look at exactly WHY the show killed everything I love about Star Wars so completely and thoroughly.

In the novelization of revenge of the sith, when obi wan left Anakin on Mustafar there were two reasons as to why he didn't kill him. The high ground he was on was actual high ground so if he went down to try and finish the job he would've risked falling into the lava and the second reason was that he saw Palpatines ship come down, so even if he safely came down and killed Anakin there was just no way he would've made it back up in time before the emperor would find him.

Obi Wan was just depressingly unambitious. This was a show that could have given us a dive into Obi Wan’s psychology as he tries to recover from the loss of Anakin towards being the hopeful mentor he was in ANH, it could have given us the closure on their relationship that ROTS left intentionally vague, flashbacks that gave real depth and meaning to their journey now and above all been an opportunity for some amazing scenes that would be fan favourites for years… And what did we get instead? An escort quest for Leia, Deborah’s shaky cam fetish on display, utterly mediocre music, time being taken up by the utterly pointless character of Reva, pointless characters no one will remember in a year’s time and some of the most bizarrely moronic writing choices since… well since the last bizarrely moronic Star Wars series that Disney created. Of all the shows, this was the one where I thought the most care and attention would be put on it as they knew just how important it was and while it was nowhere near as awful as Boba Fett, that almost makes it worse. This should be a series that leaps into the clouds and shines like a beacon for all these lesser series of how to do justice to these characters… and it just doesn’t. Even at the things it does right, it still doesn’t achieve the maximum potential that these scenes have and that’s the biggest failure of Obi Wan; it settled for being below average at best when it could have been as memorable as TCW S7. But aside from the final duel, is there a single moment or character anyone will remember as having any kind of long term impact whatsoever? Probably not, and that’s just depressing to realise.
@TheGamerGuy1712 жыл бұрын
Cool review, I definitely agree with a lot of your criticisms. One problem I had with the show was its premise in the first place. Vader and Obi-Wan never should have met in between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope and their meeting in this undermines the original trilogy. The first thing Vader says to Obi-Wan in A New Hope is "When I left you I was but the learner, now I am the master". It also really bugged me that Obi-Wan was able to defeat Vader in episode 6. The whole reason Obi-Wan spent 20 years on Tatooine protecting Luke was because Luke was the Galaxy's only hope. He was the only hope the Jedi had of defeating Vader and overthrowing the Sith. If Obi-Wan has it in him to own Vader then there was never any reason to even have the original trilogy or to even have him protect Luke. Also, the series sets up that Obi-Wan can get the best of Vader because he knows him and he knows his weaknesses but in that final fight Obi-Wan just overwhelms Vader with raw power, he doesn't at all outsmart him in that fight. I definitely agree with you on how stupid it was Obi-Wan just walked away. That fight should have ended in Obi-Wan making a cool escape and getting the better of Vader in that way.
@Garthydude122 жыл бұрын
I'm in complete agreement with this! As soon as it was announced I was concerned they'd shoe horn another fight in. It just takes away all meaning from the originals.

I couldn't get into this show at all. It's so contrived and there's absolutely no tension. You can literally just skip it. I didn't need to see what Kenobi was up to between films. It's not like this show did anything new or ground breaking to justify itself. At the end of the day, Kenobi defeats Vader, again, and decides not to kill him cause the movies wouldn't happen. You can say that the point was to have Kenobi get over his grief but we don't need to see that. We know he does, because we see him again in the films. This is just poorly executed fan service and nothing more.

I agree with your statements on the clone trooper reference but I feel it falls flat because the trooper is 501st. The 501st stayed as Vader’s primary stormtrooper legion and to see one on the streets doesn’t make sense to me since all of them except maybe deserters would have stayed in the empire’s employment, I feel that if it was a 212th trooper then it would have hit much harder with the emotional pay off since the 212th was Kenobi’s primary unit that he led and fought with for years before they betrayed him. Like the turmoil of seeing a trooper that betrayed him, the spite he would feel but at the same time sorrow seeing someone he bled with being left on the streets to beg, the flow of memories of combat and comradery fighting the feelings of betrayal and disdain would have fit much better
@elliec41542 жыл бұрын

How cool it would have been if Vader found out about Reeva years ago and they showed us in a flashback in the second episode. Like, he trained her for a couple of years already and while training, he goes: I know you are that child. You survived. The dark side of the force made you live. Reeva then gets back up and tries to kill Vader (he easily overpowers her). Vader: Your hatred for me makes you stronger. You will be a fine Inquisitor. I will train you. In years your hatred for me will grow and so will your powers. You are not powerfull enough to destroy me yet. When you'll be ready and confident enough to take me on, I'll be here. But untill then... your powers will serve ME!
@lionrampant31 Жыл бұрын
I think the problem with Reva is that she was kept alive - every other Dark Acolyte who turns on Vader (regardless of motivation) usually gets very dead, and stays that way. I mean unless they have a clone, but you get my point.

Although my opinion does differ from yours I think everyone can agree on the first point about Disney Plus. Disney definitely needs to figure out if they want to make movies or ACTUAL shows by now instead of doing something that’s kind off both like we’re getting now. A true movie experience (especially in theaters) can be a once in a life time experience (like Avengers Endgame for example. Could you imagine that being a 6 episode show and still ending like that?) but the hype of a true last episode of a season, especially if it’s the last season, can hype you up just as much. I hate it when people say “lol people don’t want to watch a 3 hour movie but will still watch a 10 episode long show. hOw HypOcRITicaL aM I rIGhT?”. While shows are made in the same way movies are (writing, script, acting, cinematography, editing etc.) they’re two completely different forms of art and these people, and Disney apparently as well, don’t get that.

Bro. The duel in the last episode works just because they copied it from Rebels. They literaly took all the good things from the duel of Ahsoka vs Vader. Even the slashed mask of Vader that revealed Anakins eye. Even the fact Vader said that HE killed Anakin Skywalker. And even the quote "Then you will die!" Everything from this duel was made by Dave Filoni YEARS ago. Disney saw it and said "no one watches cartoons. Cartoons are for kids. Lets re-use the battle but in live action". Psycho! This is why I hate the last duel between Obiwan and Vader. It doesnt have heart. Its just a copy of something great that already exists.

Darth maul survived being cut in half off his hatred for kenobi and this hatred gave him more power through the dark side. If they wanted to keep reva alive after vader stabs her a second time. They should’ve had the dark side of the force fully corrupt her. Show a physical difference, give her sith eyes and all. Similar to Anakin turning to the dark side. Mirror what happened to anakin and give kenobi somewhat of another chance to do something different then what he did with anakin. Maybe in the end she comes back to the light , but passes away as the dark side was keeping her alive. I’m not sure honestly.

Just finished watching and had a thought (correct me if this wouldn't work) but rather than the show we got the story should have followed obi wan racked with guilt over anakin and the fall of the jedi being pestered by the ghost of qui gon (gotta learn the force ghost trick eventually). A jedi in hiding finds obi wan and tries to show him that there is still hope and that the force can return to the "balance" the jedi once enjoyed. Ensue some bounty hunter hijinks and a dash of the rising of the rebellion and by the end obi wan accepts qui gons call for training with hope in his heart that luke and leia can one day tip the scales
@elliec41542 жыл бұрын
I think it would have been a lot more powerful if they'd had Obi-Wan get the vision about Reva going after Luke 20 minutes earlier during his fight with Vader. Then when he gains the upper hand he has to make an active choice. He has Vader on his knees, he will win this fight, it will take time but he will end Vader and one of the greatest threats to the galaxy, giving himself closure and avenging Anakin against this Vader. And yet... if he does, the time it will take to finish Vader, will cost Luke his life. He cannot have both. He can have victory and revenge, or he can let Vader live, and choose life and hope, trusting in the force that fighting for the light and protecting the innocent will ultimately come right, later proved right in the fate of Luke and Vader. Vader chooses victory, vegence and death, Obi-Wan chooses the wider battle, retreat, defend, protect and spare life and a greater victory than Vader understands.

Why does Luke act like he doesn’t know what a lightsaber is in a new hope when he spent 30 minutes running away from a red one when he was 8+ yrs old. The childhood trauma of nearly being killed by a evil lady with a fire sword isn’t something you should forget? Reva is a dumb character because she was invented specifically for this show when the canon of starwars as a whole has no room for her. Her character should have been the inquisitor lady from Jedi fallen order instead. Would have at least had some developed reason for the character’s existence
@alexanderlyons48072 жыл бұрын
the storm troopers "horrible aim" had a reason, they were given explicit orders not to kill them (because that's Vader's son, that they wanted to turn to the dark side) and you even see the two troopers stop shooting at Leia and Luke as they swing across and they fall back. As seen in the very first scene of the movie they cleared an entire squad of rebels and only took two casualties.The aim is elite, they just were told not to kill the children of their boss. You can also look at the big fight at the end before the death star was destroyed the first time and how easily the mopped up the base on Hoth, they are very competent. The recent stuff? Nah it's just cap and literal plot armor
@LazerzZ2 жыл бұрын
You surely realise that despite extended media providing these reasons, the actual movies themselves don’t do that, nobody should be forced to do research to find out why something dumb happens in a movie. If the troopers really were missing on purpose, then that should’ve been addressed by the film.
@alexanderlyons48072 жыл бұрын
@@LazerzZ fair point, but when you look at it our heroes had pretty shit aim too. Like the moment right before they jumped in the trash compactor not a single storm trooper was killed that i could see. And the scene you played of them missing Han, Han was also running away from them which would give more merit to them missing the shots. So while yes them not hitting shit was very convenient they at least made an effort to give an explanation at some point. And the in movie explanation could be implied even without the extended material, like the scene I mentioned where they let Leia and Luke escape. Leia and Luke looked at them and watched them leave after they deliberately stopped shooting. It wasn't shown the order being given but you could defiantly imply it there and the extended material would simply have confirmed that implication. I personally feel like if they had shown them saying "don't kill them" then all those events lose the intensity because "oh, they're gonna survive so i don't care about this". If you wanted to put it after the events then it would feel like a waste of screen time because why they missed is not that important in the grand scheme of things. Love your videos by the way, I just discovered you like 2 days ago and pretty much completely agree with all your takes. This side bar was simply a take I don't agree with but hear a LOT, that the storm troopers just suck ass. But it has been taken way too far in recent releases, like there is no fucking way an entire army shooting missed everything, like even if there was NO training at all amongst all of them put together at least one shot in going to hit, it's impossible not to.
@Carabas722 жыл бұрын
In A New Hope, Vader and Palpatine don't even know yet that Vader has kids. More crucially, George Lucas didn't even know yet that Vader was Anakin. The reality of bad Stormtrooper aim is much more simple: no military forrce in the history of fiction, no matter how elite, has fared particularly well against main protagonists with plot armour.
@alexanderlyons48072 жыл бұрын
@@Carabas72 if we wanted to go by at the moment of it's release rather than continuity the emperor was just supposed to be a politician using a fake persona. But at least in this instance you can explain it to an extent, (at least in a New Hope, the clips shown from Obi Wan and recent Star Wars is completely over the top illogical) but by that metric every encounter with something dangerous that doesn't kill the main protagonists would be considered plot armor, can't really have a movie, nonetheless a 9 instalment franchise, if the chosen one got no scooped by a goon. Even though nobody important dies Star Wars used to do an really good job of making sure the heroes take a lot of Ls. Hell the entire run time of the Empire Strikes Back the heroes take NOTHING but Ls the entire movie

I think to be honest in the world of 1000 deep dives of the plot before the episode airs and 2000 Easter egg hunts per frame there isn't really the chance to just sit back and enjoy something. Was this show ground breaking? No. Did it turn the Star Ward universe upside down? No. Does that matter? Subjective I guess. I watched this show week by week and I watched nothing about it until after it's completion. I found that a lot of reviewers came to a completely different conclusion than me. This was entertaining TV. Obi wan was back, Vader was back, Jimmy (the most important one) was back. It looked incredible for the most part and it held my attention and made me get emotional at parts. It thrilled me and chilled me and added a few cool new characters. Sometimes thats enough. Peace

I respect critics opinions and I try to watch some of their stuff because I think it’s nice to get other people’s views and blindly loving something isn’t the best thing now is it. But there is a part of me where it feels like that because I do that I can’t really enjoy things as much as I used to. So I think that wall listening to other people critique things is important it’s also important to just enjoy things every once in a while if you can. Of course when a studio steps out of line I do still think that we should be able to critique them on their missteps so if they possibly watch the video which we all know they won’t, they can learn from the mistakes and improve in the future.

I respect everyone's opinion. But the show for me was okay. What I liked was that one flashback scene, the last fight with vader (which needed duel of the fates or battle of the heroes), and Ewan being Kenobi. My biggest problems were: Reva, lack of old music, shakey camera, filler moments and episode 4 especially, how vader just let Kenobi go in the fire scene of ep 3, the weird Leia chase scene ,the lack of diving into the past, the question of how did Obi wan not know that Vader was alive for so long? Which were my main issues, however the Patterson's cut a fan edited cut which made the series to an 2 hour movie. And I liked it, it explained (not quite but good enough) why Vader let Obi wan live in ep 3, added duel of the fates to the end fight (also cut the Reva scene of her chasing Luke), made Reva less annoying, The Leia scene, removed bunch of filler and restructured some scenes. Which I prefer that fan cut over the show, however it still had some stuff I would change especially the story. Also why was this show so low budget? I wouldn't say it killed star wars, the sequels did but I still liked S2 of Mando and clone wars. But just want to mention it again that last duel was fantastic Edit: Wouldn't say it was okay had some stuff which I didn't like, or I should say that fun cut I liked but the show itself could be better and had aspects I didn't like

I am gonna add some of my extra thoughts here, the show itself wasn't written good. However I would not call it bad. The show itself would get a 6.2/10 from me the fan edit (Patterson's cut which made me like the show a bit more and Reva) I would give 7.5 but if that was made by Disney just a normal 6.8

Oh, I wouldn't say that Obi-Wan wanted Luke to kill Vader in the OT. He wanted Luke to confront him - Luke had to face his father in order to determine his own destiny of who he wanted to be. Luke aspired to be like his father in ANH, but then that aspiration was thrown into question upon finding out Vader was his father in Empire. Luke confronts Vader in Jedi and chooses to aspire to be the good man he still sees in his father, rather than giving into the mechanical monster he's also becoming ('I am a Jedi, like my father before me")

Too bad ROTJ doesn't support that. Luke: I can't kill my own father. Obi-Wan: Then the Emperor has already won. You were our last hope.
@onemoreminute05432 жыл бұрын
@@Lobsterwithinternet Obi-Wan or Yoda never explicitly told Luke to kill him. It was all about confrontation. Luke believes that there is good in his father, but has to be prepared that he can't redeem him and will have to kill him. Obi-Wan and Yoda don't encourage that, but they make it clear that it's an issue of confrontation, not just going out there to kill Vader. That's why they're smiling at him at the end of the film - he was able to confront his father not by killing him, but by inspiring him to turn good again through his compassion.

I haven’t consumed any Star Wars media since Ep IX other than Fallen order (because Star Wars game=me happy) and personally I’m done with this era of Star Wars I just want something truly new; I’ve heard Mando is different from other Star Wars media and well written (which I believe) but it’s nothing like the revolutionary editing, storytelling, and world of the first 2 Star Wars films. I know there won’t be any Star Wars product as revolutionary as the first 2 but I just want to see a new trilogy with a new time period that actually has something to say.
