At least with Maul, he was cut in half horizontally at the waist and was also the apprentice of the sith emperor himself, only clinging on through pure sith hatred magic. It requires a good degree of suspension of disbelief, but it's not too far out there as to be completely ridiculous. Nowadays, it seems every random nobody is capable of surviving a lightsaber attack (hell there was that one Storm Trooper that required 4 good whacks from one before he fell) through all their organs and then getting back up and into action again almost immediately. I mean Reva was a bloody child when she survived her first (the fact there's a 2nd time is just ridiculous) stabbing. A small child should have been boiled alive by a lightsaber melting straight through their torso, and they certainly don't have the mental capacity to will through the shock and pain. When I saw TFA in the theater, I thought that Finn was dead at the end of that movie because by all accounts he really should have been. Kylo despined him with what disney called an unstable particularly dangerous lightsaber. Yet in the next movie he's just miraculously alive and not at all paralyzed. Bacta tanks heal wounds, pretty sure they can't fix your entire CNS being obliterated.

To be fair to the trenchcoat scene Leia was so incredibly poorly hidden that my brain couldn’t actually comprehend what I was looking at so I actually didn’t see her at first
@PosthumanHeresy Жыл бұрын
People really underestimate the weirdness filter on a human being. The Leia thing working feels completely believable _despite_ also being obviously stupid as shit. It feels like an Anakin tactic, not an Obi-Wan tactic, but I can perfectly accept it working in real life. We know she's there, that instantly breaks our weirdness censor and makes us see it for what it is. But the people there don't know she's there, and they are doing their daily routine life. Besides for research, there's been prank shows (not in the horrid modern way, but in the harmless old TV way) that exploit this for a laugh. Easy three person prank: talk to a stranger and ask for directions, and midway through have two friends carrying a large object cut between you and the stranger in such a way that you can't be seen. During that moment, swap places with one of the two people carrying the object, wearing similar clothing. You and the other person do not need to be the same race, gender, age, height, or anything else. Just superficial patterns. Most of the time, the stranger will not realize anything has changed, at least until a period of resumed conversation has happened. It's called change blindness. Having a distinct object you're holding that the new person is also holding when they appear can make it work even better. Quite simply, it could work in real life and every single guard would be fired or executed for falling for such a stupid maneuver. It's something that probably shouldn't be used in fiction because it seems too stupid to work, but is more likely to work than audiences ever expect. Human vision is a big lie, and your brain is just making shit up based on what it expects unless you're extreme paying attention. None of those people looked like they were paying enough attention to be guaranteed to not fail that spot check. Not only do humans have a blind spot our brain just completely makes up from what's supposed to be there, which fails at new stimuli, but the rest of it isn't given enough mental attention to actually register things properly. Unless a person looked at Obi-Wan long enough to consciously think about him, it would likely go unnoticed. The only reasons it would fail are if someone on base actually gave their job 100% of their focus and mental energy (also highly unrealistic), or if a passing Stormtrooper saw Obi-Wan and was checking that fine man out. But it's still one of those "truth is stranger than fiction" things and doesn't play well in fiction, so it wasn't the wisest writing move. Whoever wrote that episode, I'm guessing if you say the words "change blindness" to them, their face will light up like a Christmas tree. I'm guessing they overthought it and forgot that writing has to be dumbed down from real life sometimes because reality is friggin weird. Underthinking it is the easy excuse, and honestly I think the writers were trying their best here even if they didn't achieve to the standards of some. I don't think they phoned it in, I think it's one of those situations everyone hates admitting exist: they did their absolute best and it didn't matter because they weren't good enough. Overthinking it makes way more sense if you're not just looking to belittle and actually want to think out how these things happen.
@matthiuskoenig337811 ай бұрын
Yeah no, the idea that it would work because it might work for humans not properly paying attention when it's taking in place in a base where it's their job to pay attention, especially at the time the scene takes place. And these are supposed to be elite people guarding an important base. It's just as bad to say the imperials weren't paying attention as it is to expect people paying attention to not notice the lump in the coat.

@bring-out11 ай бұрын
@@PosthumanHeresy I don't think the writers phoned it in as that would just be weird. Why intentionally write something bad if you can do it better. The most plausible explanation imo is they thought it was a campy thing that fit the tone of Star Wars which isn't entirely unfounded even though it was probably a few steps too far in this case and a misjudgement. Or it's possible that the writers thought about change blindness however failing to consider the full context here. Even though change blindness exists it's by no means unaffected by variables like the level of focus, individual susceptibility and the level of weirdness. There were a lot of people at that place and your assessment that no one was "guaranteed to not fail that spot check" is not the correct one to make. Of course no one is guaranteed to notice anything but that doesn't make it likely. And don't forget it's enough that just one individual amongst all to succeed with that spot check which means the chances for not a single success is exceedingly low. And in this case there's an alarm going which puts people in a state of alertness. In that state it's far less likely that such things go unnoticed as people are actually looking for things out of the ordinary. Talking about belittling it's not about dumbing things down for the audience, it's about not taking for granted that the targeted audience have knowledge of obscure things. And if you want to use such things you need to inform the audience about it either by showing or telling. In this case it doesn't matter that much though as the thing doesn't work in this context anyway.

The idea of Obi-Wan and Vader having another fight before ANH still sounds entirely dumb to me. Like the reason their fight in Mustafar works is because it contextualizes Vader's quote, "When I left you, I was but the learner, now I am the master." His rash actions is what lead him to be permanently crippled, and their second/last fight shows how much he's matured in his fighting style, to never make a mistake like that again. The show just makes the message more muddled because Vader slaps Obi-wan around in round 1, but that was only because he was holding back, and he would have been killed by him in their next match if it hadn't been Obi-wan choosing to just not finish the job. It's just reeks of shallow fanservice.

@@Squeekysquid So, what, you were tryna trick me into saying something like that, so you could confirm your assumption of me being pretentious? Ok then. I've been there, tbh, and I know how obnoxious dogmatic fans can be. Honestly, if you're asking "What about the show breaks canon?", you're clearly either a casual fan or not even a fan. Which is not a bad thing, don't get me wrong. I'll try to summarize it: in the original movie, Leia addresses Obi Wan like she only knows him from his parent's stories; and Vader addresses him like they haven't seen each other since the duel at Mustafar in the prequels. Also, Bail Organa is made a fool in this show and it's hard to explain how the Empire, knowing Obi Wan rescued his daughter, doesn't do anything about him being a rebel conspirer in all the time between the show and the OT. There's plenty more but that's the crucial ones, I think. It was just unnecessary messing with the well-established lore, even more so considering there was already a good novel about Obi Wan's time in Tattoine watching over Luke (leaving Tattoine in the show makes no sense; Leia would've been rescued by mercs or even the Empire itself, considering Bail Organa was officialy a compliant senator).

Kinda surprised you didn’t mention what I think was the worst thing about episode 6, how kenobi basically let luke die. After revenge of the sith, the whole purpose of kenobi’s character is to watch over and eventually train luke, but here he fails completely. If it wasn’t for reva’s sudden character 180° than luke would be dead, and the galaxy would be doomed. This kid is the only hope for billions of people and kenobi almost let him die. As much as rebels screwed up, one thing it nailed was maul, and by extension, kenobi. The mere indirect mention of luke by maul in the “twin suns” episode is enough for kenobi to immediately go into attack mode and kill maul with 3 moves, yet in the kenobi show he forgets all about luke towards the end and not only leaves him defenseless, forgives reva for almost killing him. why didn’t he attack her the second he saw her with luke? the fate of the entire galaxy is worth less than the life of one half-reformed, dying inquisitor it would seem. god this show sucks

Has they shown that scene from Anakin’s perspective it would have set up the same thing without spoiling it. Alternatively they could have not made it a reveal and made Reva’s plan obvious while making her more sympathetic. An alternative: scrap the show and make it entirely about fucking obi-wan kenobi. Like no one wanted or expected some multiworld gripping adventure, this was the perfect Star Wars centered around obi-wan just living life and would've been the closest thing to a look into the normal life of people in the Star Wars universe. Could've just had him do episodic adventures helping some farmers fight off tusken raiders or stealing back and old lady's seeing eye droid from some Jawas or literally anything pertaining to the shitload we know about tattooing. Pod racing, the hutts, maybe some imperial shit, maybe some prequel flavor with watto recognizing him and making it an episode about him trying to convince watto not to say anything or something. Have the whole him being guilty effecting his use of the force, give us some flashbacks relevant to the episodes maybe, I dunno. Anything would've been better and less destructive then this. In this scene, Obi-Wan already knows Anakin is Vader, and that he's beyond reasoning with, but just loses his nerve upon seeing his face.

From the open landing platform, to the tight corridors and space of the control room, to the precarious balancing on the pipes, to having to avoid the lava that threatens to swallow them whole as they leap from platform to platform. The environment (which also symbolizes Anakins emotional hatred and hellish descent) allows for the dynamics and proxemity to change between the duelists, so that it's never the same and they have to adapt, sometimes going fast, sometimes going slow. The cinematography perfectly frames the two combatants amidst their environment and how it affects them. The Kenobi show duel: Just has basic fighting in pitch darkness with some stones behind, alongside an annoying shaky cam. That's all it is.

Interesting, I never thought Yoda struggling in AOTC contradicted TESB (or anything in the OT)…Yoda doesn’t easily or quickly lift the X-wing out of the swamp - his big display of power to teach Luke the lesson is done very deliberately, slowly, and steadily with clearly a good amount of focus. And Yoda’s pretty powerful among Jedi and has trained for a long time. ;) That Yoda can do something similar in an emergency and instant situation in AOTC to me was always another impressive display of his ability to use the Force. Rey just kind of doing similar or more impressive things - like grabbing a engine-propelled ship - casually and with little training…or established characters like Vader and Obi-Wan using these big powers once or twice and then never again, breaks the “rules” way more than anything in the prequels, IMO…

Vader's suit was an in-universe outdated model since day 1, it would start beeping at random just to annoy him, the suit's breathing system would occassionally malfunction, every now and then the suit would just shut down entirely, sometimes for hours, forcing Vader to move himself with the Force. It's actually kind of humorous to imagine Vader's suit, one of the most recognisable and iconic character designs in all of storytelling, is an outdated barely functional model that is less advanced than the average trooper suit.

Truthfully, the biggest hinderance to this show isn't even the writing (which can be piss poor sometimes) its the directing and editing choices. SO MUCH of what is terrible about this show could have easily been fixed by reshoots, changing in editing, and having a director / actors who actually give a crap. Ewan and Hayden are absolutely ELITE compared to the trash of the current gen of star wars "actors". Their lowest points put to shame the high points of other characters and choreography.

The reason the controls are in the vent are several reasons, plot convenience for leia to have a reason to do it and not anyone else. but also because they are used to star trek where the jeffries tubes always have all the engineering control points in them, even though their not on a star ship or in the trek unvierse :D However simply put, a human star port wouldnt put the engineering controls in a room a engineer couldn't access. :s

I want to add several points to The Trenchcoat Scene: The trenchcoat itself is a massvie problem to me, as there is not a single other person on the whole base wearing any kind of distinct clothing deviating from the standard uniforms, even less so a trenchcoat. This means Tala found the single only trenchcoat in the whole base being held by a person she just killed (I think?). If they had actually cared to show Imperials wearing these when guarding the open air places to protect themselves from the water of this water-moon, it'd been much better. Next I really dislike the design. The coat is close in enough in color to the uniforms, but it's not the same color. It also doesn't really fit to the style of uniforms, I think, though we never see both of them together, so it's hard to tell. But lastly, the trenchcoat doesn't have any form of markings or identification that a uniform or part of a uniform usually would have. There's no Empire logo, no rank signs (that you would need to have on the coat, as your normal rank signs are hidden under the coat. So it's just a trenchcoat that they bought somewhere, that's extremely baggy so Leia fits under it and they didn't even bother to have the costume designers modify it even slightly so it looks like it's part of an Imperial uniform, let alone establish these trenchcoats as being "normal" on this base. And then we come to no one noticing it. Again, the Leia-bulb is plain bullshit, but let's have that pass. Obi-Wan is also the only single person on the whole damn base that has a beard and open, longer hair. The Imperium obviously has a dresscode (and only hires humans outside of special positions like the Inquisitors) and everyone on base follows that. Except that single dude there. He sticks out so much, it's laughable, even when accepting the trenchcoat hiding Leia away. So yeah... as part of costume design, this trenchcoat is hideous. And I never heard these points be talked about before, so here you go.
@Bannschwert Жыл бұрын
And regarding costume design: If the shoulder parts of the Grand Inquisitor's armour would have been higher and straighter, I'm pretty sure he would have looked more intimidating. This way he mostly looks like his arms are slouching and he's permanently depressed. The same goes for the Fifth Brother: Just make his helmet more angular like in The Clone Wars, makes him look less like a rice farmer... Reeva is fine. But their lightsaber magnets on the back... those are just really stupid.

Honestly I wish the show was cut between Vader and Obi-Wan. Half the show being Obi-Wan dealing with his PTSD after the events of the prequels, with flashbacks to missions he had with Anakin and some of the other Jedi showing how much he loved that part of his life. Then the other half can be Vader who even after a decade is still searching for Obi-Wan, we watch him massacre entire towns and torture any Jedi he finds just in hopes he finds Obi-Wan. With that we can also see the inquistors and how Vader has a hand in training them and even corrupting them tk the dark side

49:20 I am SOO happy someone else looked at the map. Disney doesn't understand how Hyperspace works. It's not instant travel across the galaxy. In fact, every time it's shown in the original and prequel trilogy, time passes with usually several scenes, with passage of time shown, before someone exits hyperspace. In Kenobi, people just teleport anywhere when it should take hours, even days, to travel.

I've watched your two videos on the Obi-Wan tv show so many times and they are by far my favorite videos on your channel. Ranting aside, I just realized that when you mentioned Vader going to Mustafar after fighting Kenobi on Jabiim to heal in his Bacta Tank, I realized that he probably has a Bacta Tank on The Devastator. He also most likely spends most of his time off of Mustafar, so it makes logical sense that he SHOULD have one on The Devastator. The fact that I have to fix a plot hole with logical reasoning is ridiculous. I've only seen Kenobi once and for good reason.

It’s a comparatively small quibble, but the stormtroopers in A New Hope acted like modern soldiers with semi-automatic small arms. In this, they got in kind of a loose 1800s skirmish order standing upright and advanced. All we needed was fixed bayonets and Richard Sharpe.

The "final" fight between Obi-Wan™ and Darth Vader® looks and feels like when I was 7 and forced my sister to play lightsabers®(you know the old plastic ones that telescoped out with a flashlight that sometimes made noises?) with me but she either didn't understand the point or didn't want to hurt me so instead of trying to hit me, making me dodge or block she just swung for my lightsaber, and I would get mad and annoyed with her until I just held my lightsaber out leaving myself wide open and she hit my blade 3 times in a row and I quit. That is what their 25 million dollar budget and presumably professional fight choreographers with two actors with a long history of dueling achieved.

2:05:00: I believe when people are saying Obi Wan shouldn't be able to lift the boulders cuz Yoda had issues, they're not talking about because of size. The fans understand that Yoda was far more powerful in the force than Obi Wan was.....that's why they're saying it. Though I hate talking about medichlorions, they had mentioned Yoda had the strongest count, while Obi Wan was known to be the weakest. His determination made him one of the best Jedi fighters, but that doesn't mean he strengthened his medichlorion count up to lifting mass boulders. That's what the argument is.
@hk1371 Жыл бұрын
Plus, it just doesn't fit Obi-Wan as a character to do that. As you said, he was always determined and mostly used his saber for defense. Him doing that stunt robs him of being Obi-Wan and makes him like a SWTOR Jedi character.

Funny enough, the Patterson cut (essentially a fanmade edit that comprises this series into a 2 hour movie) fixes a LOT of the issues you brought up in your reviews. Obviously there are still a lot of issues with it, but it's quite surprising how many bad things about this series can be fixed by simply leaving a good chunk of it out. Of course it makes the "the viewer needs to fill in the blanks" problem even bigger, but I'm somewhat willing to accept that in a series about space wizards with glowstick weapons that can cut through metal. It's legitimately somewhat watchable, which is more than can be said about the series itself. EDIT: Yup, had I waited another 5 minutes before posting this comment, I would have realized you addressed this in the very end of the video. Cool, our opinions align even more than I thought they did.
@matthewcummings50674 ай бұрын
Please don't with the "space wizards with glowstick weapons that can cut through metal" stuff. Don't pretend you don't know what suspension of disbelief is - all fiction relies on it and all humans without severe brain damage are capable of it. No narrative work, no matter how absurd or mundane its premise, is allowed to throw story-telling principles out the window. Even comedies (as an example) need a baseline of expectation from which to surprise the audience.
@CaptainSweatpants904 ай бұрын
@@matthewcummings5067 absolutely didn't mean that the plot holes don't matter - they absolutely still do. That's why I didn't say that the Patterson cut was "the best movie I ever watched". It made a borderline unwatchable show into a kinda watchable movie with still a lot of inconsistencies.

@@CaptainSweatpants90 I'm sorry if my comment came across as hostile or accusatory. I appreciate your clarification. I'm just very jaded from seeing insufferable morons, sometimes with large platforms, push this notion that because Star Wars is about "space magic" we shouldn't critically think about anything in any media relating to it. Besides being a jaw-droppingly stupid thing to say for reasons I pointed out previously, it's actively counterproductive to any discussion about any fictional work because there are now people who think it's okay to expect others to turn off their brains if the discussion is about something fictional or fantastical. These same people also often use arguments like "but it's just a show for kids" as though our children don't deserve just as good storytelling as adults do. In fact, kids often subconsciously collect meaning from stories, even if they don't immediately understand what they're seeing. They can watch that media several times as they grow up and potentially learn new things each time. If you write meaningless crap for kids, don't be surprised when that generation ends up having a poor understanding of the world and their place in it. Sorry, didn't mean to dump all that. My point is, I'd advise against using the terms of stupid people. I don't know you but I think it's likely you're above that.

the only reason reeva should have survived is the same as how maul survives. she uses her hate, and since the writers dont want the good guy to do a bad thing and kill her, then once she decideds to let go of her hate and turn to the light side she should have sucomed to her wound and died. this solves the whole, an inquister knows who luke is and kinda sorta gives her a redemption arc

43:53 Another thing that is f***ing depressing about these newer Star Wars shows for me is that they do nothing to change the depth/pitch of the older characters' voices (Qui Gon or Vader).😔 I get that they may want us to marvel at the real them and that they've aged, and or maybe it's for nostalgia, but it's depressing that they don't have the same power. Obviously there is nothing wrong with getting older, but adult Qui Gon in Tales of the Jedi, for example, sounds like he has a cold.😔 Idk if you'v seen the Little Platoons video on nostalgia but he fleshes out exactly why it's so sad

I get that the show writers thought it was impressive to not pay attention to the source material, but they actively shot themselves in the foot because five years before Obi-wan went to Nur, Cal Kestis and Cere Junda invaded and nearly destroyed the fortress. Cal's infiltration was nearly impossible to pull off anyways, so why would the empire just lose their security after all that? The Empire is not stupid. Can't say the same about the writers though.
