Climate change is a threat to human rights. Court rulings are now making governments and businesses sit up and listen. Sitting back and doing nothing to stop global warming is becoming less and less of an option, as more and more citizens seek redress in the highest courts.
Top courts recently passed judgements forcing oil companies and governments to do more to prevent climate change. Up to now, the enormous power of the petrochemicals industry has gone largely unhindered. But some environmental organizations and activists are no longer prepared to accept that. Felix Ekardt, head of the Research Unit Sustainability and Climate Policy in Leipzig and Berlin, has filed several suits with Germany’s Constitutional Court. In his opinion, the German government’s Federal Climate Change Act is too lax. Judges at Germany’s top constitutional court agreed, in part, with Ekardt and his co-plaintiffs. They ruled that long-term measures were required to achieve zero emissions and that the German state needed to do more to achieve that goal. More and more environmental cases are coming before the courts - worldwide: There have been similar verdicts in France, the Netherlands and New Zealand.
The Paris Agreement aims to limit the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2 degrees and preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The agreement is binding. But up to now the climate accord has not actually led to major structural change. The documentary shows what the latest court rulings mean for environmental policy and climate change. After all, climate change poses a risk to human rights.

Sweden is cutting down its forests and replanting with pine-birch plantations in order to produce oh-so-clean biofuel. The woods around my summer cottage have been cut down, torn out, by enormous machines. It looks horrible, and animals, birds, insects, berries, mushrooms disappear. But biofuel per definition (!!) emits no carbondioxide, so Sweden leads in the environmental revolution. Oh, and we've pledged to protect biodivesity...

We must and we can. Do not forget that the Ozone layer issue was quite different in nature. CFCs were easily replaceable, but decoupling CO2 emissions will be several magnitudes more difficult. That's why we have to start now. We can use cog income to invest into solar panels and batteries. That's about half-way there. Then innovation of agriculture and other industries can take us the rest of the way. The clock is ticking for cog companies. If they refuse to cooperate any longer, what options remain but to nationalize them or put their boards into jail or implement some other draconian policy? They are filthy rich, and can procure continued income by investing in other industries, rather they want to inflate their own income by lobbying, countersuing and playing other zero-sum games. I believe the elite has to realize that at some point the rest of humanity doesn't like playing that game anymore. And they might if the rest of the world gangs up on them.

if the final annual CO2 output levels off at double what it is now that is calculated to result in a 1 degree C rise in global temperature. There are many more real issues that we can actually resolve if a fraction of the CO2 hype was invested in them e.g. protecting the tropical rainforests. and cleaning up the world from plastic pollution.

Well. That's nice for people who can manage that. And those people should indeed do that, if only to break from the daily routine some times. It's mostly good for urban pollution reduction, but won't be enough to change things, however. Until most modes of transportation are green, every little bit helps, but thoughts like this should never detract from knowing that significant changes have to be made to our current hyper-capitalist economies. Making money is all good, except when the mitigation of the effects of externalities such as pollution are not being paid for. That's by definition not capitalism anymore, but a thuggery.

I would be interested to know if any studies have been done to estimate the effects of going back to Sundays being a day where everything is closed and there is nothing to do. The problem with air pollution, is that the time needed for it to be naturally eliminated, by the chemical processes going on in the air, is insufficient to keep up with the quantity we are continually putting in it. One day a week, where the natural cleaning can take place with a considerably reduced addition, could have an impact well worth the inconvenience of not being able to do a lot on a Sunday. For decades we managed to survive with everything being closed on Sundays. I'm pretty sure with a bit of effort we could pull it off again. We will not all die because we can't buy a tee shirt, or go to MacDonalds on a Sunday.

One of the big problems is that we have already established companies that aren't being replaced, it takes billionaires and many many years to disrupt. Instead these companies NEEDS to be PUSHED out of business if they don't convert. For example the cement industry NEEDS to convert to work with hemp and the auto industry NEEDS to convert to work with batteries, food producers NEEDS to produce more plant foods instead of meat. Existing companies are the MAIN PROBLEM, we already have much of the technology and solutions needed to decarbonize. The problem is companies aren't being punished for their outright INHUMANE inaction. We need regulatory actions against capitalistic incentives that DO NOT care about the climate without government regulations. Tesla almost went bankrupt multiple times because of the existing corrupt auto industry and the financial industry. It is only now years later existing companies are being disrupted, THAT IS SIMPLY NOT FAST ENOUGH DISRUPTION. PUNISH COMPANIES IF THEY DON'T CONVERT TO GREEN SOLUTIONS.

Imagine 9 or 10 billion people will have to have less environmental impact than 500 million did 200 years ago (pre-industrial). That's 1/20th less than the majority who got around by walking or horse and had a wood stove that was used to both heat the home and cook meals. It'll take the complete elimination of the personal transportation system outside of a bicycle. Forget trains, planes, and automobiles. Even the majority of the agriculture was produced by animal labour. Reality bites when you come to grip with the realities.

No... I am not saying it will be easy, but it's perfectly possible to do this. It's called "decoupling". Continued production that has less and less impact on the environment. Cradle to cradle recycling is possible. There are techniques for reduced greenhouse gas emission for concrete production. Etcetera ad infinitum. All these little bits add up to it all. And we're not only going to imagine doing it in a good way, we are actually going to do it in that way. Vote green next time, make some small changes in your own life. That will be the start.

That can be solved by lowering the cost of alternative energy like solar and windmill so that can afford even poor countries. And also lower the price of electric vehicles to replace the old ones that use fossil fuel. We invented alternative energy to lessen climate change but the price is for rich countries only. We’re not talking about who contributed the most. Even poor countries using fossil fuels are also making a contribution to global warming. Just remember we live on the same roof. We cannot solve the problem to search for another planet to live on.

@FEC Multimedia If there is sunlight and solar can be used, use the solar. If there is no sunlight and the battery power is depleted, use fossil fuel. Don't rely 100% on fossil fuels. Use the fossil fuel "in Case" there is no sunlight or wind or the battery power is depleted.

@@PG-3462 where I live the town is connected with walk ways and cycle tracks but people still drive as it’s easier the problem is some people still need to use cars to get places due to mobility issues or medical appointments. But yes places should be more connected trough walking and cycling paths it’s also important to keep adding to the trees and wild flowers. Ways of making homes that use less electric and petrol to make and maintain and incorporate wild parts ie natural flora roofs plant walls ( these can both help with insulation too which will help not havinn to use as much heating. Changing gas boilers and heaters ect to other forms ( some cars use bio water now to power cars instead of petrol for example there are so many parts of the industry our roads what is used to replace them ect now we use things not grat for the environment but last no time so has to be replaced again and again we need to build more for quality again. Put a limit on to warranty’s of products and expectations of how long a product should last would help as atm there are a lot of products that go out in months or a year and so repeatedly need replacing so need more resources to make ect

I don't know why stupid people get so much attention. You can't do anything about climate change it is inevitable. It would happen whether we were here or not 10,000 years ago where I am sitting right now in the state of Pennsylvania was under a mile and a half sheet of ice then climate change happened and the ice went away and now I can sit here. And guess what we didn't have a damn thing to do with the climate change and the climate warming and melting all that ice we had nothing to do with that the same as now we really don't have anything to do with it we add a very very little bit to it in the long term scheme of things. Very very little bit we are not accelerating anything it's going to happen with or without us.
