Very interesting case. As a Paramedic, I had a patient who overdosed on acetaminophen on Christmas Day. She was very depressed. She was unconscious, and combative; she managed to punch me in the jaw. I almost thought she was faking. In fortunately, I never learned her out come. People don’t realize when they take over the counter meds they can be really serious, or even fatal. I wish I could have found out whether she was really suicidal.

It’s so easy to OD on Benadryl. I was using it habitually for a while. It helped me feel less anxious. Plus no sneezes, ha ha. I am aware that this was dumb. Funny thing is, it wasn’t a conscious decision to start doing it. Just some number of hours would go by and I’d think, “I can probably take more now.” You build up a tolerance. Well, one day I was just sitting there and all of a sudden, nothing around me was real. I don’t know how else to describe it. It was like being in a dream, very disconnected. I stood up and felt like the floor was a mile away. I thought, “Uh oh. That’s not right.” I was very mellow in the moment and eventually I just went to sleep. Crazy crazy dreams. I thought I’d check to see how many Benadryl I had taken that morning. (I had a pack I’d just bought) Ten. I’d take ten in only a couple of hours. Not the most any one has ever taken, but five times the recommended dosage and I didn’t even realize it at the time. So I realized it was a problem and quit taking it. It wasn’t hard as I was pretty afraid of experiencing that unreality again. Now I don’t take it even correctly because I don’t want to get back in a bad habit with it.

I only remember also waking up properly 3 days later, pulling out a tube, and being very confused still. I'm a bit late to this, but I want to share some info. A large amount of medicines labeled ”PM" have Benadryl as the active ingredient to make you sleep. Having suffered from insomnia (if you haven't had chronic insomnia, you cannot imagine how much it sucks) since my tween years, starting in High School at my doctor's suggestion, I took Tylenol PM every night to help me sleep. Just one dose per night. For at least a decade, or more likely two. I don't know if I had side effects. I have minor memory issues, but that could be age or other medications I take). It eventually stopped working, and I take other sleep aids. One is a half dose of Zzyquil, which is also Benadryl, and either Ambien or an anti-anxiety (which I also have) medication. I sure wish I didn't need it, but that ship has sailed. I guess I didn't need to share my life story, but I wanted to let people know that Benadryl (in it's scientific name which I can't spell) is in a LOT of sleep medications. It's something many people don't know.💙
