And if substance choice 'a' stops working (or has too many negative consequences), you just switch to substance choice 'b', then move on to 'c', and so on down the line. The secret to good recovery is to get your mind to a place where you feel okay WITHOUT needing or wanting to alter your perceptions. 👌

Serotonin Syndrome is horrible. I mixed DXM with 5HTP and had a 3 day stay in ICU. I had a friend call me an Uber to the ER at 3am, and the last thing I remember before blacking out was me banging on the door of the room they put me in shouting I needed help immediately because I was dying. I knew it was serotonin syndrome but for some foolish reason it didn't cross my mind about that risk before I took the pills. I have No memory of anything else other than waking up at some point surrounded by my parents. I left the hospital with a bag of my pants which I had pissed in, and psychomotor retardation for 3 weeks. I couldn't form sentences but I could think them so my speech was so delayed and broken I would get panic attacks because that's a very overwhelming thing. Luckily I've made a "full" recovery from that instance, though I can say I am not the same person mentally anymore. Kids, if you're gonna do drugs, always look up EVERY possible interaction with ANYTHING. But don't do drugs kids they haven't done a thing for me other than make me a shell of my former self.

I ended up with serotonin syndrome from a single normal dose of this stuff. Thankfully it was mild enough to where I didn’t have any seizures or a fever (just the tachycardia, muscle spasms and minor auditory hallucinations), but apparently my parents never even let me have it for colds when I was young because my whole family has weird reactions to it. Of course another medication I was on at the time significantly lowered the threshold for serotonin syndrome, which has happened to me before, so probably not likely to happen to most people.

The saddest thing about all of this is that from the very beginning of her symptoms, it was obvious that she never had depression to begin with. She has *bipolar disorder.* The symptoms he described at the beginning were episodes of mania and depression, not major depressive spells. An SSRI won’t properly help bipolar disorder. She needs a mood stabilizer. Based on his description at the beginning, he probably meant to put that she had bipolar disorder and changed treatments at the end but forgot to add it. He was describing textbook bipolar symptoms, so I went ahead and added it here. For those curious why I know, I have Major Depressive Disorder, have family members with bipolar disorder, and have studied human psychiatric conditions at a pre-collegiate and collegiate level, with my original area of study being psychiatric diagnostics.

7 years ago I took two bottles of dxm syrup while on an MAOI (and doubling my dose of it for a week) as an "attempt". I figured I'd have a wild night before getting seratonin syndrome and leaving this earth. I took it on friday, and was completely ruined until monday, when I had to drive (awful idea with how messed up I was) to my therapist appointment. I made it without crashing somehow, where she noticed the shape I was in and called an ambulance to get me to the hospital. I'm currently the happiest I've ever been and can't wait to see the future that I almost lost. If you're going through something, I assure you that you do have the strength to get through it. There's a happy life waiting for you if you can keep going. You've fought hard, just fight a bit longer.
@SeeroBoarder8 ай бұрын
I was on an MAOI (Parnate) from August 2023 until I was hospitalized for Serotonin Syndrome on January 21st 2024, where I was sedated for 6 days with propofol and very high doses of Versed, intubated, and kept in critical care for 5 additional days after I was taken off sedation. I was on 50mg of Parnate a day, and I made the mistake of taking serotonergic supplements along with it, the primary one being SAM-E. When I was sleeping, my mother noticed my legs and feet shaking with seizure activity (clonus), so she woke me up, and drove me to the emergency room, where my memory stopped right after being taken back for intake. This is when I had a mental status change, where I became very confused, physically agitated, sweating profusely, and developed a fever, with very high blood pressure and heart rate. So they started to sedate me and run a ton of blood tests. During my time in critical care, after I was taken off sedation, my doctor said my case of SS was the worst case of serotonin syndrome he had ever witnessed. Thankfully he recognized my symptoms as serotonin syndrome right away, and in addition to the sedation, put me on Cyproheptadine, an antihistamine that is antiserotonergic at high doses. I was on the maximum dose of cyproheptadine, 32 mg/day, for about 5 days straight. I think the fact that most sources say that SS should be resolved in 24 to 48 hours is also a testament to how severe my case was. They made it clear that I am very lucky to be alive. And for the first time in many years, I feel truly happy and thankful to be alive. This was not intentional and I was not suicidal at the time, but I was certainly still depressed. Had my mother not been there and taken me to the ER at the exact time that she did, things would have been much worse. I can not imagine going out that way, it's truly one of the most horrific ways to die. I am very happy that you are okay and are doing better as well. Thank you for sharing your story and giving me a chance to share mine. It's only been about two weeks since I was discharged from the hospital, and I am still recovering with brain fog and low energy (I assume mostly from the withdrawal of the abrupt cessation of Parnate). Thankfully there seems to be no permanent damage to my neurology, psyche, or organs. It's an experience I will never forget, and I feel has forever positively changed me. I remember shortly after being taken off sedation and fully realizing what had happened, I burst into tears, profusely thanked the nurse for saving my life, hugged her, and said that I loved her and everyone else who saved my life. Sometimes it takes something as severe as an extremely close brush with death to make you appreciate being alive.

So I paused your video to say I've "dosed" ( a term I used while using DXM) probably over a hundred times. From the the years of 2014 to the end of 2019 I would dose out on pure DXM geltabs you can find at the dollar tree. It wasn't everyday use, but I would binge at times. Then just stop. Anyway, the things I had experienced mentally were terrifying. I still dissociate, I get mentally taken away from reality and my memory is absolutely terrible, on top of this DXM started as a "legal psychedelic" for me. And quickly became a way to numb and hide away from the world. I'm almost 3 years clean from it.

I also used it a lot when I was younger though the main reason I stopped was my body was really starting to reject it I would get nauseous just from smelling the gel caps. I think it’s worth contextualizing the DXM not only as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, but as a dissociative like ketamine, which is a drug that people use recreationally. I can attest. I've had my experiences with dextromethorphan cough syrup in the past and this only happened that one time when I drank syrup that had guaifenesin in it. I was talking with this very cute girl in my car while drinking the thing but quickly had to excuse myself for a minute because of the nausea that had started creeping up on me. I bolted out of the car to find a place to puke but couldn't even do 15 steps before a jet of hot diarrhea started spraying out of my sphincter only to be strained by my underwear. I then started vomiting this pink foam while my backdoor kept on leaking a little more until I could regain control over it. The best part of the story is that I was then too high to walk at this point, so I had to sit in all my glory and shitted pants for a few hours before I could get to a restroom and clean myself. Much spaghetti was spilled that day even though my friends didn't seem to notice that I effectively shat myself in public. For my defense, that happened 12 years ago at a time when we didn't have Internet at the tip of our fingers at all times. I vaguely knew that you could get high from cough syrup and did it on a whim without proper research and it bit me back.

Thankfully I woke up feeling like absolute muck one day and put two and two together, and stopped destroying my body for a little dissociative fun. That was about 10 years ago now, and between the DXM abuse and the alcoholism that I carried with me for my whole time in service, I now have a fatty liver, and I’ve found that I’m SOL when it comes to using cough medicine as directed - it seems like it just doesn’t work for me anymore, still. It's just that most people are too lazy to research. Almost all drugs can be used relatively safely and all of them can kill you. Of course, not using is always safer than using.
@markfark1883 жыл бұрын
@@cyancoyote7366 There are a good amount of drugs that aren't able to kill you through their regular means of consumption. Think smoking or eating weed, smoking DMT, eating shrooms. Even snorted ketamine is an impossible feat for the vast majority of people. Still, overdoing anything can lead to a bad quality of life, so that could be considered equally bad or worse ^^
@cyancoyote73663 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is what I meant! ^^ LSD and DMT aren't likely to kill you, though lysergamides can cause severe vasoconstriction in certain cases, also hyperthermia, which can in theory cause death if one is predisposed to circulatory problems. However, they can harm one mentally. I know someone personally who tripped nearly every week and he refused to admit that he is doing anything wrong, yet I saw him deteriorate and sincerely advised him to get help, which he did... thankfully. Water in the right amounts is necessary for survival, yet water can kill you in excess. Doing a small line of cocaine isn't likely to do you any harm if you are otherwise healthy and your surroundings aren't dangerous. Still, it has its risks, as does driving, taking the bus, skiing, et cetera. There is a right balance for everyone, everyone is different and that balance can be relatively wide in case of healthy individuals, and it can be narrow in case of people who are predisposed to somatic or mental illnesses. Molecules are just molecules. None of them are evil. They just exist and are capable of exerting changes in our physiology, we know more about some than others, but every drug is capable of being beneficial or harmful. Cocaine is still used in certain surgical procedures for anesthesia, methamphetamine helps some people who are obese or do not respond to other treatments (in ADHD, for example), LSD and psychedelics are now showing promise in treating depression.

A former best friend of mine abused DXM nearly daily for years. His last days were in the hospital from liver failure and he had clearly lost his mind.

This One time in high school, my friend had learned about “Lean” and was explaining to me the concept of it and ***also*** what a robo-trip is, so I said to him that I had actually seen a full bottle of this syrup he was talking about in my home restroom’s Med cabinet and we agreed to meet at his house some time after school and all I had to do was bring the cough syrup and he would put in the rest. I was really excited, so I grabbed the damn bottle and proceeded to chug about 3-4 ounces before heading out to his house, where he was ready to prepare the drinks with some ginger soda and some candies and had a blunt rolled which we were gonna “dip” in the syrup and then let dry to smoke in the future. While making the drinks he explained to me that “you don’t really wanna drink more than an ounce and your cup should last you a few hours....” I immediately panicked.. but i carried on with the plan. At least I know I did. I have an extremely faint memory of leaving his townhome complex, it was dark and I was freaking out so I called someone, I don’t know who but it was a girl friend of trust. Then, my memory is blank again, until sometime in the middle of the night, when I woke up due to an insane amount of pressure felt in my brain, it felt like I was waiting for it to hurt but it was just tremendous pressure I mean I felt like a damn cartoon character being plumped with air. I got up and immediately started losing my vision, it wasn’t not static either it was just a vignette of black closing in to the middle alarmingly fast, I was soon standing in the middle of my room, completely blind with my head about to explode, I didn’t know what to do so I started feeling my way to the kitchen, I also lost my sense of hearing sometime during the journey, I don’t know how, who told me, who guided me or where I heard it from, but the only thing I could think of was to open the freezer and stick my head in it. It worked, it fucking worked, I felt this instant relief, my head slowly went back to normal and my vision returned, I stayed in the damn freezer for so long after I was actually good just contemplating what the fuck was happening to me, I thought it was an overdose...

This one hit home. I am 31 now. When I was in my early 20's, I used to abuse this stuff. I was well aware of how it affected my brain. At one point I was in the hospital with a heart rate close to 200bpm. The doctors told me that I was "running a marathon laying down." I am very lucky to have survived my addiction. It took a long time for my brain to re-adjust to normal serotonin levels. I still experience extreme depression and mild random hallucinations. I wouldn't suggest this stuff to an enemy. I now chose to take Theraflu, eat citrus fruits, and drink water when I get sick. I chose to never touch this stuff ever again. Thank you for doing this video.
@vorpal222 жыл бұрын
You don't provide much information. I started taking dextromethorphan spiritually and recreationally at age 19. I am at age 44 now and have used it over 1,500 times over the years, with breaks for months or years. I have had many bad trips (which have been the most beneficial in the long run) but no long-term side effects. DXM did not cause your extreme depression: it likely alleviated it. You should be on a proper antidepressant that works for you. I cannot believe people report "dexrtromethorphan addiction." I have used for months daily and never had a lick of withdrawal. Nicotine withdrawal was horrific. Dextromethorphan withdrawal was like when one of my favourite TV shows had the season finale and I didn't know what to do with myself in that time. I never take DXM when I get sick because it doesn't work. I take acetaminophen, pseudoephedrine, and a decongestant... perhaps some diphenhydramine or doxylamine.
@vorpal222 жыл бұрын
@kirakira Maybe you should spend twenty five years studying pharmacology like I have and then come back and tell me what you think. Dextromethorphan withdrawal is psychological. Psychological withdrawal can be difficult to overcome if you don't have the mental fortitude, but it is not physically addictive. As I said, NMDA antagonists tend to reduce tolerance and prevent addiction. There might be a small number of exceptions. All I can say is that there is a VAST amount of literature on the use of dextromethorphan and you should acquaint yourself with any possible risks (everything in life has risks) and decide if the benefit outweighs the risks. If you aren't mature enough to do that, you shouldn't be using any conscious altering substances at all. Again, the rewards I got from dextromethorphan use have been so intensely pronounced that any minuscule risk I faced was negligible. Have you taken dextromethorphan and had physical withdrawal symptoms?
