I was very surprised that I'm very similar to you in a lot of things. I'm 17 and since I was young I had this passion to figure things out and know how it works from the inside. Then I started learning to code 3 years ago and it was really hard for me. Also lately I started learning HTML & CSS but I just learned the basics because I didn't like designing or making UI's. I figured out that I only like everything about the backend, logic not design. One day i will become a professional coder just like you .

I'm surprised that you found PHP hard, I learned PHP and avoided JavaScript for until a project I was making needed it, found JavaScript very difficult and convinced myself I wasn't good enough (this was about 8 years ago.) Last couple of months I have decided to finish off the project (it's rather large and not a good first project lol) but I feel like after all this time I'm capable of learning so much quicker than before. I've watched your JavaScript playlist a couple of times and you explain it in a way I get. I've purchased my domain just yesterday and hoping to release the beta version soon. If I have any advice to anyone struggling it would be not to put too much pressure on yourself and do small projects until you get it, also if you suffer from anxiety remember it's only the anxiety talking because of course you can do it. Everything you didn't know yesterday was as daunting as what you don't know today 😉

i am thirteen now. i have learned everything from youtube. i also have the same story like u. i started programming in the age of 12 with html and css(not programming languages) but was very bored using them. then i thought of making games and tried first of all with scratch and enjoyed it a lot. but then i thought of making more advanced games and tried it with godot game engine and learned gdscript native language of godot but soon i got that it was not my kind of stuff. then i started learning python through youtube and was bored in maybe the 23 video of the playlist. then i thought i should move on and started learning c# and left it too. then for the final time i started learning python again (with full dedication) and now i learned all the basics of python oops concepts and i think im an intermediate python programmer i have made many projects like a virtual assistant (using if else and speech recognition) , command line interface programs like mad libs, hangman, and the program which i am proud of is a folder cleaner which sorts certain files into Images Text Media Others folders and an automation of dino game with pyautogui and pillow module. learned pygame and made basic clone games like snake game, pong game, and space invaders. I have solved many problems in hackerrank, project euler (only 10 as problems there were very tough for me to understand) recently i started learning django and i made a todo app on my own. i also started learning more about web dev and learned js and in path of learning node js. and ds and algo in python. i think now i have defeated myself of 2 months before. and flourished as a developer. Now i am learning ml but i can't install heavy packages like sklearn, pytorch, tensorflow as in the area i m living has only 4kbps(which is also not constant) internet since the past year. it is the only thing which comes between me and programming. i always take inspiration from you Tim and learn from ur tutorials and python efficient tricks.

Meanwhile I discovered coding when I got into highschool at 14, worked with pseudocode and an ancient language by the name of pascal, also learned html then in grade 9, then the next grade when I was 15 we learned cpp, learned more about cpp in grade 11 and then proceeded to learn how to use the microsoft office pack in grade 12 for some odd reason with no coding whatsoever, except for a site coding project we had but no actual coding classes... and that's all, now at 18 I only know how to make basic math related programs in cpp and can make okish sites using html and css, the latter two being mostly self thought... at least I got into a good collage where I'll learn a heck of a lot more about programming... now I just need to get my lazy ass up and watch some online tutorials and courses on cpp and maybe some other stuff so I go into collage with more knowledge then the rest

Doesn't really matter too much on what language you learn. As long as you are consistently coding, you will be learning tons. I recommend just doing what you enjoy, learn whatever language you want, but C doesn't have the best error messages and it can be a pain to learn, especially if you don't know any other c-based languages (c++, c#, and I think java falls under there as well). There's also tons of python libraries, like Tkinter, that you could learn. (i.e. pygame for game dev, selenium for web scraping, numpy/pandas/matplotlib for math and making graphs, django/flask for web dev, etc). Outside of Python, there is Flutter or React/React Native for web/mobile dev, you should learn javascript basics before heading into react, but flutter uses it's own language called Dart. I hope that this was helpful! TLDR: Just do what you enjoy, that's all that truly matters.

Why don't they teach assembly and C in your College? I mean that is the basis of all computing and that's how you truly learn how a computer- and operating system work. Even when I studied EE (Electrical Engineering micro-electronics) we got all this assembly, C and operating system design. And this makes me understand why so many of my millennial and GenZ CS colleagues have a really hard time in writing efficient code and problem solving. If you do not know how a system works, it's impossible to trouble shoot and optimise their applications. One example I worked for this start up where we trade energy and we trade energy in 5 minute intervals so you also have 5 minute measurements, and that for 8000 devices! So a massive data set. And a developer was tasked to create a report of the actual amount that was delivered in 24 hours. It took forever to run! So I look at the code (also PHP btw, early 2000s) and I just see him calling my DOA with a very simple query and seeing that query I immediately suspected what was wrong. I ran the database profiler on that query and I see a massive massive table scan. So I look at the table and there's a column on/off (1 or 0) whether the client delivered energy or not. And then datetime, then client id and amount (that's consumed or delivered based on the 1 or 0). And the developer did create an index but followed the order of the view in his query on/off, id, datetime. And I pulled him over and said: "Order does matter! You are now taking the least unique field there's 500.000.000 + records in there so about 250.000.000.000 you order on 1 or 0. If you start with date time that's the most unique then client id, then on_off it's going to be fast". And sure I was right! But he could not fix that issue and it took me no more than 10 minutes -- even learning the new table and structure since I had last coded for it. Same thing in that massive data set, we need to divide certain energy values by the number of devices a client has. I always used >> for the multiple of 2 and then subtract the multiple of the remainder. Because a division would cripple a machine especially in an interpreter. Compilers are smart and they will also use shifting when optimized for speed, even often unrolled. Because a DIVQ can take 42-95 cycles a shift, 1 cycle! I never was glad with the PHP (interpreter choice) for that start up, and the growth of the customer base really made me hack PHP to get evert ounce of performance out of it whilst another team developed -- like I had suggested to the CIO -- in Java with Oracle RAC. And I actually had to change the divisions with shifts and it saved MANY HOURS during billing! I actually created a pthreads binding in our PHP to allow threading to be used to run more jobs in lightweight parallel. That's the sort of stuff you do in a start up and you need really low-level experience.

I didn't even own a computer till I started college and then I didn't get into programming until my third year but I really liked it. It was a hard learning curve for me but I finally graduated now I'm pursuing a front end job while learning back end so I can be full stack. High school was easy for me I never studied and I never had to take any hard math or sciences. Going into college, particularly after the core classes, is when I had trouble I didn't have any study skills at all and my GPA suffered. If I could go back in time I would do everything different but I can't so I'm working hard now to correct my mistakes. If any high school kids or early college students are reading this don't procrastinate and study there's nothing worse than realizing you wasted your time.

I guess good engineers share that wanting to know how things work from an early age. And when fostered those kids go far. My (step)dad who my mum married when I was 5, was a systems analist and in his younger years a HAM radio geek. One day when I was 6 I found this big box with all these receivers and transmitters! And my child like mind went in overdrive thinking that my dad was a Russian spy! I showed my friends whom where 2-3 years later and they confirmed my suspicion and urged me to tell my mum. So I told her and she laughed herself a hernia. That evening my dad showed me all the stuff and explained what it was and how he build it and why. I didn't understand most of it but it fired my curiosity even further. So he literally gave me this massive 1.5 meter by 0.5 meter box with his childhood projects in there and I was allowed to do everything with them. So basically I broke them all taking them apart. But my dad planted a seed. He never mind when I hacked my bike or whatever! The only thing he didn't foster was my desire for having a computer. I was 9 years old when we went to my cousin and he had a VIC20, and he showed me the 10 print "hello"; 20 goto 10. And it BLEW my mind! The whole way back I talked about how I wanted a computer. And my dad being a systems analysts was like: "there's no need for us to have a computer, they are serious expensive machines". I kept nagging and nagging but the didn't relent. When I was 11 I got to borrow that VIC20 because my cousin didn't use it anymore. And learning basic was like exploring the biggest electronics box ever! Then when I turned 12 my parents bought it from my cousin and gave it to me -- ironically my cousin bought a C64 from that money :/ Which luckily a year later I got to borrow and I was 13 and I really stretched basic to its limits so it was time to lean assembly. And the C64 had this awesome video processor and my cousin had a speed loader cardridge that had a monitor so you could "edit" memory in mnemonics. And soon I was breaking copy protection, hacking games with cheats (still some videos on my channel about that). And then I met this kid in highschool who was far more advanced in electronics than me and he wanted to learn more about programming. So together we created a cracker and phreaker group. And together we went to study EE (micro electronics) so a lot of low-level coding too. My God that's been 32 years!

@@sassy_s349 in these 10 months I revised numpy , then I learned tkinter and I made a project which was notepad but after learning it I found the gui was old fashioned so I learned kivy which has modern gui then I made 2-3 projects using kivy after learning kivy I learned mysql database and now I am thinking to make a spotify clone with mysql and kivy module and after making this project I will get into web dev most probably in june or july.I could have learned more but due to school and exams I was not able to learn more. Btw I also learned many miscellaneous things in these 10 months

I started coding with C# and I'm finding it really hard to learn another one. I am considering getting into C++ because apparently that's good for graphics. I am working on something in C# but once I'm done I am going to try to either learn Python or C++ because I want to be able to have complete control over everything in the app. Any advice on where to start and whether C++ or Python is better for graphics and applications?

A small doubt, when did you learn data structures and algorithms? Many people say it's the foundation to become a good programmer.
