A few corrections… While mortally wounded in Ford’s Theater, Lincoln didn’t die inside the theater; he was taken to The Peterson House across the street, where he died between 7-7:30 am the next morning. Also, Booth did not “charge out” of the tobacco barn at Garrett’s Farm; after being told that the barn would be set on fire if Booth and Herold didn’t voluntarily surrender, David Herold surrendered, but Booth refused. The barn was then set ablaze, and a Union soldier named Boston Corbett, who was standing outside the burning barn, caught sight of Booth inside, and aiming his weapon through the slats in the barn wall, shot Booth, hitting him in the neck and severing his spinal cord. Union soldiers dragged the paralyzed Booth out of the burning barn and laid him on the front porch of Garrett’s house, where he lingered til dawn, and after asking to see his hands, uttered his last words, “Useless, useless…”

President Lincoln did not die on the night he was assassinated. He was shot at 10:15 PM, on Friday, April 14, 1865. He died at 7:22 AM April 15, 1865 across the street from Ford theater. The name of the play that they were seeing was called our American cousin.
@davidwilliams22794 жыл бұрын
Yeah the poor fellow was probably in a lot of pain for those hours. Trauma medicine in 1865 was primitive at best. They measured and traced the bullet path by probing it with a metal rod. The wound would try to clot frequently causing pressure and he would visibly react with pain. All they could do was rip away the clot to give him any relief from pain. If he had somehow miraculously survived the wound he would have surely died slowly from infection. Pretty abysmal to think about.

Im an historian that has lived in Southern Maryland most of my life. I had volunteered at the Mudd home for a few years and have given the Booth reenactment tour of that night, it starts at Fords theater and ends at the Garrett farm house. Whats left of the Garrett farm house is just a cleared wooded area in the middle of state route 301 in Virginia.
@johnstevens9673 Жыл бұрын
Booth thought he would be praised in the South for the assassination of Lincoln. He realized soon after that almost everyone condemned his actions, even when he finally crossed the Potomac River in Virginia the people wanted nothing to do with him. Most believed his actions would bring terrible consequences on the south. Most of the south knew the war was lost and after 4 years of war they just wanted to get on with their lives.

Besides Booth himself this story has a couple of very interesting and colorful characters, one was Booth's brother both were part of a family of actors of which John Wilkes was not the brighest star, his brother Edwin was considered one of the best actors of the 19th Century and he was totally unrelated to his brother's actions quite contrary, if John killed a Lincoln Edwin saved one, a few months before he helped the president's son Robert during an accident in a train station, he only learned who was the man the had helped that day years later. The man who shot John Wilked Booth, Boston Corbett was also an interesting fellow with a tragic story and a mysterious end, he lost his family due disease, had a religious epiphany, started to go mad due his profession as a hatter, served in the army during the war, killed Booth, was interned in a mental institution, escaped and finally dissapeared without a trace and proably died in the wilderness in the early 20th Century.
@diyimprover68874 жыл бұрын
Corbett was an A-1 lunatic religious fanatic. A couple of years before the Civil War began, he was propositioned by a prostitute on the street. He went home and castrated himself with a pair of scissors in order to free himself of any future temptation. Then he had a bite to eat and went to a prayer meeting before seeking medical attention. After shooting Booth, in contradiction of orders directly issued by War Secretary Stanton, he was asked why he disobeyed orders. He replied, "Providence directed me".
