When Roosevelt DID die, in his sleep from a blood clot that dislodged and traveled to his lungs, Thomas Marshall (VP of Woodrow Willson) said that "Death had to take Roosevelt sleeping, for if he had been awake, there would have been a fight." I believe that statement 1000%.

Teddy was fearless. I read his history once. Seems that he suddenly became a different man of this fearless variety because he lost his wife and daughter to death by illness at the same time when he was a young man. Those around Teddy say this shocked him into being a very different man with no fear. Maybe he lost everything he loved but had to keep on living and didn't fear death because that was the place where his loved ones resided.
@adamestes52272 жыл бұрын
Actually, he never lost any of his daughters in his lifetime, as his two daughters died in 1977 and 1980. He did lose his first wife and his mother on the same day (February 14, 1884) in the same house, saying of the event, “The light has gone out of my life.” Later, in WWI, his youngest son Quentin, who was a fighter pilot in the US Army Air Service, was shot down and killed in France in 1918. Roosevelt himself died a year later in 1919.
@angeloiodice93042 жыл бұрын
@@adamestes5227 Thanks for the correction. I believe I read that he never recovered fully from his last extended hunting expedition. Supposedly it was an ill-fated horrendous catastrophe of a hunt, and he was gravely ill and lucky to make it out of the jungle. The sicknesses and struggles experienced there darkened his health for the rest of his life.
@adamestes52272 жыл бұрын
@@angeloiodice9304 that is true. The expedition was plagued by tropical diseases, many of which were insect-related, one man drowned in rapids, another was murdered and the murderer was left behind. Roosevelt himself got a gash in his leg that got infected and was near death during the trip. Had it not been for a chance encounter with rubber tappers, there’s a chance they might not have made it out of the jungle, but though he received a hero’s welcome in New York, Roosevelt’s health never fully recovered from this expedition. That didn’t stop him from wanting to fight in France with a reorganized Rough Riders when America got into WWI, but he had also lost sight in one eye from a boxing game while he was President, and so Woodrow Wilson and other figures in power denied Roosevelt from shipping off.

@arjunkrishnagiri3 жыл бұрын
@@codewordafl5850 Well actually the 1912 election was weird. Basically his VP Taft became president after him but he did the opposite of what Teddy believed in and Taft became really hated so in re-election year 1912 Teddy ran again in another party called the Bull Moose Party based on progressivism, so in the election Roosevelt lost but he beat Taft but lost to Woodrow Wilson. The thing is though is that Wilson won Easily with 435 Electoral Votes BUT Roosevelt got 88 as a THIRD PARTY CANIDATE and Taft got 8. It was weird and Wilson won Easily because back then barely anybody voted(14 Million) so technically Roosevelt lost by a little more than 2 Million Votes which today would be a very small amount but back that it was a lot. Depending on how you look at it he won by a lot or he lost by a lot. But because of the Electoral College he barely got any votes. Hard to think 10x more people vote nowadays.
@bm.37593 жыл бұрын
he quite literally took a bullet for his country, without even being the president yet.
@arjunkrishnagiri3 жыл бұрын
@@bm.3759 Well he was. This was before the 22nd amendment so you could run for more than 8 years. He was elected for 8 years but left, though he was dissatisfied with his successor Taft and decided to run for a third term against Taft and his opponent Wilson. In the end Teddy took too much of Tafts vote winning 88 electoral votes mean Taft won 3 and Wilson won 450.

@michaeldaigle72074 жыл бұрын
.38 caliber is plenty accurate. It being a .38 definitely helped is survival though. Stacks of paper are actually pretty good at stopping bullets, even ones with high velocity/energy and .38 moves at about 1000 ft/s and has about 300 lbf of force behind it, which is admittedly low, but still deadly if you take a direct hit.
@justinthompson28874 жыл бұрын
@@michaeldaigle7207 I was referring more to the revolver than the caliber. I only know 2 men who are accurate beyond 7ft static with a revolver. The low bore-axis and improved grip angle/ sights of today's semi's have most of us quite spoiled, hence why the comment was comical.
@michaeldaigle72074 жыл бұрын
@@justinthompson2887 7ft? It's not really fair to blame a bad shots accuracy on the gun. I shoot with both modern semi automatic pistols and double action revolvers, and I have no issue with either of the guns accuracy out to several dozen yards, let alone 7 feet. Christ most shooters I know could hit a grain of rice from 7 feet.

Teddy bears were invented because of a famous incident where Teddy Roosevelt spared a bear cub on a hunting expedition. That's also where he got the nickname, "Teddy", in the first place. The invention of the teddy bear didn't have much to do with how much Teddy was loved, but rather was simply modeled after the incident and picked up the name due to it.
