FULL MANOR LORDS REVIEW: • A Total War Veteran Re...
Warfare is a vital part of the Manor Lords package despite being the second most important part of the game. Manor Lords' battle systems have managed to capture the imagination of Total War and strategy players for some time, as even though we're looking at different scales and interpretations of battle, Manor Lords attempts to portray medieval battles in a realistic and simulation-like style. It is a massive part of why I find the game so appealing, and it's a good thing it's so much fun to play.
That's why in this video, I analyze the battles and warfare of Manor Lords, compare it to Total War, and show you why my first impressions of it are so positivem, and why I cannot get enough of these battles.
What do you think of Manor Lords' warfare so far? Let me know in the comments, and remember to leave a like on the video and subscribe to the channel! :)

I love the fact that there are no standing armies (maybe in end-game? Knights with retinues?). Those are your workers. In TW you see a pyrrhic victory and think: "Meh 2-3 turns of recruting and I'm back in the game" . Here a pyrrhic victory can devastate your village or at least delay your plans. Especially early when you have like 10 dudes and know each one of them, so when Maćko dies you know your tannery just went offline and your profits from upcoming trader went to hell.

To simulate how valuable peasants were - and how hopeless in fight, realistically - and how hard it was to recruit a sizeable army - I always play TW with the self-imposed challenge of NEVER recruiting peasants... This simple trick, along with the rule to never allow rebellions if they can be avoided by lowering taxation, adds hugely to realism imo.

Seriously though, Total War's units have gradually become weightless and anemic with every new game. I miss the battle in Medieval II when piling up more and more units against one single enemy unit, defending a gate, meant incredible losses but also that the number of men actively pushed against the smaller unit until it was a thin overstretched semicircle. Or when cavalry charges were game-changers

I think the very fact that this is small scale city builder first with warfare as an extension is what really makes it tick and stand out from the crowd. You are not fighting for the sake of it, you are not doing it for nebulous goals either, but for very tangible reasons with purpose (for example for that fertile soil in the neighbouring region that you need to feed your population) and with the consequences fit for such a risky move.

I love the way the armies/soldiers look. It’s so immersive. They actually look like what you’d imagine mid 14th century European soldiers to look like. There’s no ridiculous fantasy armor or banners/colors that are way too bright. It feels very grounded and realistic. It’s quite refreshing. Even the brightest banner and cloth colors have a natural subdued hue to them that looks realistic. I can’t wait to train and outfit my guys. From; hammers and poles with leather caps < chainmail hauberks, nasalhelms with shields, axes and spears < reinforced gambesons, kettle helms and swords < early plate armor, bassinet helmets and halberds. Just over a week left until EA release. I really didn’t think a one man show could lull this off. I really didn’t. I thought the town building or enviormnetal ambience or combat would be good but no way all 3 would work well, look great and mesh well. I was wrong. I know he’s hired some helping hands to complete it, but I still get the impression this developer is going to be rich. Good for him and well deserved I say. We have way too few history based games that are lead by passion for the subject and it shows. You cant fake passion and when it’s given time, money and resources to grow, its the fuel to make incredible games.

The Divide Et Imperia mod for Rome 2 tackles this very issue, by having regional population caps. Say a fertile historical region or a larger city state can muster more forces than a small town in the middle of nowhere and if you lose too many soldiers in the backwoods of Gual, you must decide to retreat to a province where you can replenish your losses quickly, or stay and replenish far slower and augment with mercs.

I’m a 3D artist myself, and I’ve worked on Game-ready assets. They require good topology and optimization. So textures are utilized to the max. Without good optimization, it will be a messy process. (Lag, FPS drops, engine issues etc”). And in this case of multiple people (armies). There’s a function called “Instancing” where the engine uses the same pre-loaded model for all troops with the same equipment. There’s also LODs, which is the “Level of Detail”. This function depends on your distance to the model. Every set of distance you get further from the model, the model will switch to a lower detailed (less vertices, texture detail etc) version. But it won’t look different from your point of view because you’re far away, this work both always, the closer you get to the model, it will switch to a higher detailed version. There are many other functions. So the coder is responsible for all of this. While 3D modeling and animating are hard processes, they have quite clear goals. For experienced artists, the moment the concept is established, it’s quite a clear process for them. While for Coders, they have to handle the engine and implement the models/animations. So the process for them doesn’t have a clear path. They run into errors more often and have to make everything work in harmony.

I know it is a small thing but what I am most looking forward to for Manor lords is I heard bodies and flags are persistent after battles so you can see where combat has taken place. Just the thought of seeing a reminder of how hard fought some of my land was and maybe my town or manor or whatever expanding to encompass the former battlefield and maybe removing the bodies that way would be nice. I don't know I have always liked persistent bodies as a game mechanic. Probably got that from total war and dawn of war

These guys nailed it, its all about the gravity of the battles. When i was younger, i could play custom battles on total war all day. As i got older, the custom battles became less fun because of their lack of purpose. The best total war battles that i still remember, are the ones where there was something very important at stake. Battles that decided victory of a campaign or survival of the country, that sort of thing. So by making the battles have real impact, really increases the enjoyment factor 👍

The impression I have from this is that comparing Total War's combat with this is like comparing Command & Conquer to Company of Heroes. Instead of focusing on great masses and meat grinding, combat is a lot more tactical and your decisions, big or small, matter a lot more. I'm looking forward to this one...

It was always the abstract nature of strategy games that always prevented me from playing them. A single giant character model (apparently representing an entire group of people) moving at 300mph across a tiny board game map with miniature villages at his feet just rips the immersion apart for me. That's not a game, it's a spreadsheet. This is what it took to get me interested. This feels like I'm actually doing something, rather than merely placing bets and waiting for the result.

I would love to see them add something like your men must camp when moving around the world map and after fighting for long periods. Making it more slow paced where it can take a few days to meet the enemy. Also turning fights into multiple day battles not just 1 fight and you win. Maybe you could fortify your camp making mini sieges giving you advantages when out numbered. Also later on if they are ever considering a DLC there could be a rulering baron or lord that you have to appease and win favor with via taxes or joining his army from end game threats that come from outside the map or even offensive wars/crusades where you can take spoils back home giving a economic reason to have an army.

I've participated in some LARP and Reenactment battles over the years. Having done skirmishes with 20vs20 and battles with up to 300vs300. Smaller skirmishes already feel so stressful, but actual battles are a nightmare. Manor Lords is the first game ever, that gives me the feeling an actual commander has on the battlefield, because not only of the impact and chaos, but also because of the importance of every single person within that fight. Your militia and your retinue are people, that you know and need. They are not some people, that I raised by paying some goods. That is what made me fall in love with Manor Lords.

Fun fact, most medieval military engagements were relatively small scale like this. Hollywood battles were very rare, with 40,000 or more in a battle would be a nearly war deciding battle, and were usually the main turning points in a conflict. For refrence The Battle of Hastings was the largest military engagement of the Norman conquest, but there were many smaller skirmishes and battles.

My favorite command is the give way command. Changes your tactics entirely, like when hannibal uses it to surround the enemy in a place that you wont expect to be surrounded. Also, the casualties in battles have a huge impact because if they are militias, your economy is taking a hit to production and will take time to replace, both during and after you rallied your troops.

I think one cool feature would be for experience and drilling playing a big role. Controls should be sluggish for untrained militia, taking a good amount of time to reposition or disengage from a battle for instance, and controls should be responsive for well-drilled soldiers. Untrained troops should have unsteady lines that do not advance all at once, with some parts slower than others, while trained troops should have a consistent march (and higher overall speed) and stick together in battle better, making them more resistant to being flanked compared to a Mob.
