Nice! I just bought a 63 Rambler Classic 660 4 door straight 6 engine a few weeks ago. Its in excellent shape but I do have some similar issues. Heater blower not working , temp and gas gauge not working and speedometer is bouncy. Also , having problems with wipers. They did work but not now. Still a great car!!

Congrats on the car! Glad I’m not the only one with these issues. Hopefully they’re not too hard to sort out!

Lube the speedo cable for a start. Check connections, encluding grounds, for the sending units. Then, if that doesn't help, test the units themselves.

It is noteworthy that this car has a dual chamber brake master cylinder. The only other car made in North America at the time with this level of braking was Cadillac.

Had the 770 hardtop, in the same color combo, but a 6, with three on the tree. Tri Poised Power was just a marketing name for the very common method of two engine mounts with a single transmission mount at the rear, a method new to AMC in 1963. Those dual ashtrays have ball bearings! The seats fold down into a bed (heh, heh, heh). Should have two brackets which slide under the rear seat cushion, to support the seat backs, then pull front cushions out, and flip them around, which makes the bed flatter.

@@mpt.yt4 I learned to drive in a '63 Classic 770 4 door, and before that, used to camp out in the side yard, with my buddys, in it. Also had a '64 Ambassador 990 4 door, with the 327 two barrel V8, a Detroit Dragway trophy winner! The AMCRC ( American Motors Rambler Club), for '54-69 cars, and AMO ( American Motors Owners Association) , are great clubs with many parts vendors, all over the country. Also, great places to find service manuals ( I Just traded a ' 64 Classic manual for a '63 American manual, with a guy in my local AMO Chapter. Give me a email address, and I will give you his number. He may have a owners manual too). The headlight dimmer switch, is that metal button on the floor, next to the parking brake pedal, standard location, back in the day. I currently own two AMC project cars, a '63 Rambler American 330, 4 door wagon, and a '68 Javelin, built 343, 5 speed Tremec, 3.73 twin grip (posi) rear.

Also, if that engine hasn't had the timing gears replaced, do it now! The originals have nylon covered cam gear teeth, which get brittle with age, and shear off. Another thing with this particular unibody, the heater core is located on the cowl pan, under the cowl grille, and dirt and leaves and pine needles collect around the lip of the core opening, and rust starts there, leading to water leaking onto the floor. The factory actually had a fiberglass replacement, as a recall part later on, for that issue. Just keeping that area clean, prevents it, if it hasn't happened yet. Good luck! 😊👍

You didn't have the key in. Put the ignition key in and put it in acc. Turn on the radio. It does have an FM tuner. These were very popular in the 1970s. Ifnit were factory equipped with A/C, it would have a setting called Desert Only. The A/C in these old Ramblers was like having a blast chiller in your car.
@mpt.yt49 ай бұрын
Unfortunately the radio doesn’t work with or without the key in the ignition

Hopefully you have learned that D2 starts the car off in second gear, for slippery conditions, and that D1 is the normal position for everyday driving. A 64 Rambler IS a modern car! Did you notice the dual circuit brake system? Most cars did not have that until 1967.
@mpt.yt47 ай бұрын
Actually learned that about a week after posting! It’s been a great car for me so far. I did notice the dual line brake system. Didn’t know 67 is when it became standard though.

Those are ignition points and condenser that are in the glove box. And that is a fm converter. Also, you put the front seat all the way forward.Then, you recline both sides of the seats, and it makes into a bed for camping.

When I was in HS my best friend would sometimes drive his fathers 1963 Ambassador to school. As with all Ambassadors it was powered by the Rambler 327 V8. And no it was not a Chevrolet engine. Rambler had a 327 in 1957, Chevrolet did not have their 327 until 1962. They look nothing alike. I just want people to know that Rambler engine was a runner. He sometimes would do a burnout and it would smoke the tires both it had a posi. rear. as long as you wanted it to. I can remember yelling at him Mike let off you are going to blow the rear tires. Mint green his mom picked the color when they bought. it new. Looked just like this one except for the grill which I liked a lot better on the 1963.

That is awesome! The "tri poised power" moniker on the air cleaner refers to a 3 speed automatic. What is the proper selection on the gear selector for normal driving though? It's confusing with the "D" and 2 on one side and a 1 on the other side. (i know that means second and first gear) But where should selector be for normal function, like starting in first and progressing thru to third gear as speed dictates?
@mpt.yt49 ай бұрын
Thanks! I found out through research and asking around that D1 always starts the car from a stop in first gear regardless of circumstances for maximum power. D2 starts the car in second gear and then climbs to third in ideal conditions to keep revs lower and achieve slightly better MPG.
@TaylorZ29 ай бұрын
@@mpt.yt4 So for normal driving you put the selector in D1? I had a 62 Rambler but it was three on the tree. I rearranged the R-A-M-B-L-E-R letters on the front grill to read Mabel. It looked like a Mabel lol. Love your car sir.
@mpt.yt49 ай бұрын
D1 for better performance and D2 for more economical driving. Either gets the job done
@boggy76658 ай бұрын
I drove a '66 Ambassador for a few years in the '80s. That car was architectually the same. Mine had the new 232 I-6 & also had 'Tri Poised Power'. My interpretation of that was, the engine had two mounts to either side of the approximate center of gravity of the engine & transmission, with the third 'poise' being the rear wheels, weight & torque being carried through the torque tube. (oops, I guess there's a 3rd mount on the trans, and a double universal on the driveshaft?) On the transmission, I noticed when using D2 that the RPMs flared a bit on takeoff, so I always used D1 on the worry that something was slipping. These transmissions may need periodic band adjustments, not sure. I think it's related to the Ford 'Cruise-O-Matic' of the late '50s. It's a Borg-Warner unit.
