Hello from San Diego. Heard you mentioned in the video Exotica Rare Fruit Nursery where I bought a few tropical fruit trees there as well. I started a home orchard a year ago. So far I planted in the ground: 2 Li jujubes, a multi-grafted Gefner and African Pride 2 atemoya, Lisa atemoya, grafted African Pride, red jambu wax apple, alano sapodilla, 2 longan trees, brewster lychee, white peach, giant fuyu persimmon, red valencia orange, Asian guava, multi-grafted tangerine, hass avocado, Asian pear and a manila mango for rootstock. Where I live is in climate zone 10a which is similar to your other house near the ocean. We get the ocean breeze but not much fog. The soil here, however, has a lot of heavy clay and river rocks so I had to amend the native soil to improve drainage. I would like to graft other avocado varieties and in the future graft mango varieties to the one manila rootstock that just put in the ground 2 months ago. Do you sell your avocado scions? I would like to get some to graft onto my hass in the fall season. Btw, I am a new subscriber but watched/liked pretty much all of your posted videos. Thanks.

Some of your trees are small enough that you could mesh net the fruit or use plastic shells from your grocery shopping to protect the fruit from squirrels.

Did u graft the gold nugget mango yourself or is it from Lowe’s or Home Depot ? The lavern high graft is a hit and miss in SoCal . I have 26 varieties of mangos so far so good in LA. I am a avid mango collector as well.

Hi, what mango varieties produce best in Los Angeles? I also live in the area and am eager to grow the mango varieties that produce best in Los Angeles.
@AJTheGraftMan4 жыл бұрын
It's a LaVerne high graft. 26 varieties! Sounds awesome!
@mhu50364 жыл бұрын
Naqib Shifa for me I would suggest the labeled “vigorous” classic varieties like Valencia pride , Haden , Glenn and Carrie does well and taste good and grows moderate in SoCal . For south East Asian mangos Okrung grows well here , while nam doc mai is a very slow grower . Coconut cream is pretty hard to grow for the first two- three years as it adjust to our climate . Newer varieties that grows really well are Fruit punch , orange essence , orange sherbet , cotton candy , lemon zest , and lemon meringue does really well to excellent in LA county as well. I would stay away from the dwarf varieties like Pickering , cogshall , Julie , ice cream as they only get two flushes a year . If a slight temperature drop or frost happen , the dwarf mango tree will lose a whole year of growth .
@mhu50364 жыл бұрын
ajmal31 I have a lavern high graft Glenn that fruits non stop like your gold nugget with a lot of productivity . While my lavern high graft gold nugget grows really well with foliar feed and bi monthly granular ground feeding .

:), a bit of techno/doorbell at the beginning. i dont know if it is public, but in the next video can you speak briefly about yourself, land of origin passion for mangoes, grafting, or other hobbies like motorcycle surfing ??you can show your neighbourhood with mango and avocado , orange trees and the ocean, the beachas well. If all this is private no problem. A guy from zone 7/b Europe.D P.S. I think Kent is also a very vigorous grower, especially the bigger seeds. Manila or Ataulfo has more growth rate? I heard that Valencia Pride, Kent ,Tommy Atkins are very vigorous..Do you think that Manila is the most vigorous in Socal? Do you have papaya from seed? :) thx
@AJTheGraftMan4 жыл бұрын
I’m considering talking about these things in a video if my channel grows more :) Kent seedlings are great rootstock. Here in California, the best rootstock I know is Manila or Ataulfo. Both have great vigor, with Manila having slightly more vigor and growing power. I don’t grow papaya. I’m not a fan of them. Thanks for the suggestions

Just a friendly tip from someone who lives near and grows tropicals also , get a in line water filter, most tropical trees do not like our tap water and the tap water kills all beneficial bacteria in compost , your trees are hella stunted from water salinity you can tell by the leafs bro also get some tiger sulfur and chelated minerals in your jackfruits and mangoes! Trust me I learned the hard way !!
@AJTheGraftMan4 жыл бұрын
Very interesting info. I'll certainly look into it. Have you ever tried powdered gypsum to leach away salt build up in the soil?
@jettyeddie_m91304 жыл бұрын
ajmal31 not for my soil because it’s already alkaline , and that will make it even more alkaline locking up the nutrients in the soil so the plant won’t be able to feed and will be stunted , I use acidifying fertilizer for like blueberries, or agricultural sulphur , my trees looked just like yours and once I started doing that the leaves were huge after and they actually started growing after years of being in the soil .
