I wrote a little more about my paella experience over on Instagram: In a previous video I mentioned that I wasn't a big fan of paella, one of the main dishes of Spain. But I had to give it another try here on Formentera island. Honest review: I stand by my opinionated opinion that I don't care for it, especially the seafood version. It included two full crabs, sitting there staring at me as if they might still be alive. I wasn't sure what to do with them, so I cracked away at one with a knife and fork until the top of the crab popped off. There wasn't much inside. I put my fork inside, got a chunk of something, put it in my mouth and quickly spit it out. One of the most disgusting things I've ever tasted. I'm not even sure what it was, crab brains I guess? The rest of the dish was more tolerable, but not particularly tasty, brown rice mixed with assorted seafood chunks. Maybe there's a paella out there that I would actually like, but I haven't found it yet. Ee-BEE-thah, Mate! Thaaaat's how you say the name of the world's party-hearty destination. Remember the Z's in Spain's Spanish (NOT Mexican Spanish) are pronounced like our "th's". Why is Z pronounced as "th" in Spanish? In Castilian Spanish, Z and soft C are pronounced TH. This is just the way the pronunciation evolved from the TS that was the standard in the middle ages. If anyone tells you there was a Spanish king with a lisp and his subjects copied him, try selling them a bridge in Sydney.

The best paella is usually in the Canary Islands, on mainland Spain and Balearic you have to check the reviews to find the best place for that. For me seafood paella is one of my favourite dish, but after doing the ancestry check i am lot mediterranean but i am born 1000 km from the sea.

paella in mallorca is called "arroz brut" without safran, because this did not exist on the islands and was far to expensive for them. the beasts who looked at you might have been scampi, but i think these were gambas. i know that mallorqui suck out the head, i hate it, brrrr, but take the legs of, open the gamba and the inner tastes quite differently, might be delicious for people who like it. not everybody likes seafood, thats normal. who likes everything! i do not!

Here's hoping it never changes....such a beautiful island...the colours are amazing...May a perfect time to visit Spain or Greece....temps are comfortable and crowds are not overwhelming......certainly influenced me to put it on a " to visit" list

Usually those steps were for smuglers of early 20 century. You can find that all over the Balearic islands, specially in Mallorca. Could be also that they used the stone for building material.

Ibiza people nicknamed Formentera "la Roca" (The rock) because they used to sail to Formentera to dig out stones to build their castle, called Dalt Vila

Spanish is the name of the language outside of Spain but inside of Spain it is called Castilian or Castellano. The language emerged from Latin in the Castile area of Spain. So the signs are in Catalan and Castellano. Balearic Islands is also its’ own autonomous region, it is not part of the Catalonia region. Though Catalan is an official language in the islands, there is a Balearic dialect too which has some differences from Catalan. But most everyone speaks Castellano, as everyone is not local, but they are from other parts of Spain.

well in mallorca they speak mallorqui, language which is not understood by the catalans, but the people of the balears all of them understand catalan. i was told, that mallorqui is older than catalan. menorca, eivissa and formentera differ slightli with their language to the mallorqui, but all of them understand each others and as well the catalan language. paella in mallorca is called "arroz brut", without safran, was to expensive and did not exist in the islands. the gambas who looked at you.... take of the feet, open them and eat the inner. mallorqui often suck of the head, i cannot stand it, brrrrr, but love gambas. i know, that these animals of the sea are not liked from anyone and that is normal. who likes everything?? i do not! love your videos of the baleares, thank you so much, you made my day ❤

Back in August1963 we landed on Es Pujols beach on a day trip from Ibeetha (please) . The beach and sea was stunningly beautiful and basically empty ,there were a handful of people plus those that came off our boat. We brought packed lunches from our hotel as they warned us very little food or accommodation was on hand. The local population was tiny and most left when the tourists left ; the first cement truck had apparently arrived in 1958 …..looks like it’s moved on . Glad the beaches and crystal seas have survived.

That seafood paella looks amazing - to me one of the best dishes in the world! Regrettably you could not really appreciate it and much to my surprise there are many people who don't care about rice dishes - while there are millions in Asia living on rice! Otherwise I would have never given a special thought to rice or potatoes - they are just there along with meat, fish or vegetables, I thought!

Gabriel, I’m catalonian. Formentera is not Catalonia, they just speak our language 🙈. We speak spanish too, here and in Formentera. Great video

@@RovexHD Yes. Different accent and some words change (like, very few words but still). There are like 4-5 dialects of the catalonian language here. Valenciano (Valencia) is one of them, despite valencians claiming it to be an autonomous language

Gabriel Traveler: Those square looking marks in the rocks where done in the past by stone cutters who would chisel out sandstone blocks for house foundations and to make Corn and wheat grinder stones.

Formentera still looks very original, but luxury (hotels, bars) has come in recent years. Every year Formentera is in july and august overcrowded. Many Yachts come from Ibiza and everywhere else to Illetas Beach. The video shows just the natural side of my beloved Island.

I'm always interested in where water supplies come from on the islands. Are there underground supplies or do they rely on rainfall and storage of same?

Water supply used to come primarily from underground lakes (aquifers) - until recent decades or so because of tourism and overuse the aquifers became contaminated (salty) or dry so they are not always reliable. Desalinization (converting saltwater from the sea) is becoming more prevalent. And imported bottled water of course.

This paella doesn‘t look good at all. And they ripped you off, if they charged for the bread which usually is free. Alioli is not at all suitable for paella. You really should give it a third try on the main land. 🙋🏻‍♀️👍🏼

wrote a comment, did not find it. well in the balear islands they do not really speak catalan. i was told in mallorca that the catalans do not understand the mallorqui, menorqui, ibicenc, formentesc because it differs so much to the catalan, but the islanders understand the catalans. i was told as well, that the mallorqui is much older than the catalan. who knows, makes sense, because the catalans cannot understand them.

Have you ever thought of wearing something that has the name of your KZbin channel on it while traveling so others know you are on youtube? People would also ask you about it and it would also give you more subscribers. A hat or a name tag on your shirt would be ideal. Just curious. Hey Gabriel, I love your videos and especially the Indian ones because I've been to India many times. However, this video freaked me out a little because if you had fallen or gotten hurt on your adventure, it might have been a long time until you were found. Also, if you are going to be climbing around so much, you need better shoes, especially when balancing on dodgy, crumbling paths and overhangs. Just worried about ya. I want you to keep on travelling.😊
