I grew up in the outer sunset. Raised by Sicilian immigrants. Growing up I noticed many of my friends came from immigrants too. Indians, Chinese, Albanian, Philippino , Russian…many different ethnic backgrounds. It was a melting pot. That’s why food was diverse and great there. People brought their own unique food culture and shared it. Most of those families are gone now but the small mom and pops still standing, they’re probably pretty good. Go support them. God bless SF.

First moved to SF in '95 and was pretty much broke my first 3 months. My go to meal each day was the Five Spice Chicken with rice/cabbage at Cheung Hueng. That meal was my lifeline 🙏👌💯

I've been living in the Sunset for at least 10 years now. It's certainly isolated from the craziness of downtown SF. It's nice and cool throughout the summer and the Chinese food is plentiful.

I love the fact you're covering the Sunset where I've shopped and eaten for the past 30+ years. In addition to Irving and Noriega, there are lots of great Chinese restaurants on Taraval, beyond 19th Ave. This is where you'll find a concentration of more northern Chinese cuisine, like dumplings and soup noodles. BTW, these northern cuisine restaurants are a result of new immigration patterns whereas early immigration was from southern China, hence lots of Cantonese restaurants. It's great that there's such a diversity of Chinese food available. (note: I know you [Victor] know all this, but I thought I'd add more info since many of the commenters thus far seem unfamiliar with the Sunset neighborhood.)

Growing up in San Francisco during the '70s and '80s, I have cherished memories of the city. Back in the day going to Chinatown was an all day Saturday event - Dim Sum in the am and then grocery shopping. You went to the butchers, fishmonger, and produce store. Mom use to buy a bag of long bones to make broth and remembering we were sucking out the bone marrow before it became popular. Because we did not have a car, we took the Muni, 38 Geary bus from the Richmond district to get to Chinatown. Irving St in the Sunset District and Clement Street in the Richmond District were an excellent alternative for those who lived in the Sunset and Richmond.

Growing up I had an aunt who lived on 17th and Irving. It was always a treat to go visit her and my cousins during the holidays. We'd walk Irving and either eat or order out at Sam Tung. They moved to Seattle around 8 years ago so I haven't been back, but glad to see Sam Tung is still doing well and a local favorite.

I grew up in the Sunset in the early 1960’s. Back then, I think we were the only Chinese family there. Things were so different back then and the traffic on 19th Avenue wasn’t so congested. Although I moved to the north bay, I don’t visit SF much.

Pandesal, butter, and over easy egg. Kind of addicting and simple. I’m not a baker, but a couple seconds in a preheat oven, the pandesal’s a bit fluffy and firm. Slide some butter in between and add a cooked egg. I’d eat it even if it goes cold; left in the microwave.

@@johnnytran800 I mentioned the Irish population in a comment above before seeing this - but in short Sunset is still half Irish. The Chinese didn't take over the district, but they do have more storefronts that are visibly Chinese. Majority of the Irish businesses based in Sunset are not storefronts, they're mostly construction companies, painters, home-related businesses that you don't see. But in terms of residents, I would still say they outnumber Chinese folks.

08:00 Oriental Seafood restaurant: I found only swiekiau (how the Indonesian call it) or shrimp dumplings (they call it here), something like wonton but in different shapes with pork, shrimp, & ear mushrooms. Delicious!!! The owner of the Mini Pots somehow is successful to break "the curse" of the location. Uncountable type of restaurants occupied that space but failed. The Mini Potsticker is the 1st one, I believe, who is successful. There is always people waiting outside for their orders or to be seat in.

I have to disagree with Brandon when he says that not a lot of people outside of The City come to the area. I live in the Inner Sunset, right next to GG Park, and there are TONS of tourist who come because of the park. I literally helped a family of tourist on Saturday, with how to get back to their hotel down in Fisherman's Wharf, because I noticed they were looking at a map a the 44 bus stop. I live on probably the busiest block in the Inner Sunset and you know how I know this? Every Saturday and Sunday, starting at 10am, there is a line of cars trying to drive into GG Park to access The Academy of Sciences parking lot. I avoid driving on the weekends after 10am, because when I do, it takes me 10-15 mins to get from the corner of my block to my apartment, which is in the middle of the block. I'm an SF Native, who grew up in The Inner Rich, but now live in The Inner Sunset (exactly 1 mile from where my family still live). My story is very similar to Brandon. My immigrant parents owned a Chinese restaurant on Lombard for 10+ years in the 80s.

Totally hear you. I’m not in the area as much as you guys, but I can imagine it’s gotten more and more busy again as we move further away from when the pandemic initially hit. I know there’s way more events again at the park, and with the street/local events and farmer markets, I’ve been hearing about a lot of these efforts to revitalize. We actually initially shot this footage way earlier in the year too, so I’m sure even in this amount of time since then, it’s even a bit different again. Thanks for sharing!
@kristinelai
@kristinelai 2 ай бұрын
Agreed, and I also disagree with Brandon's statement that Sunset got hit hard by the pandemic and not many people visit ... 94122 is the most recovered zip code in the City based on sales tax revenues and is thriving. I can barely find parking on Irving! It sounds like he no longer lives here so it seems his assessment is from older memories.That said, it really is the best district to live and visit. One last tidbit of history - Sunset is not just mostly Asian, especially as you go further towards the 94116 area. The Sunset has always been known to be heavy with Irish immigrants, many working class families/blue collar. It wasn't until the late 70s did more and more Chinese arrive. My parents moved to 46th and Ulloa in the mid-60s and had to hire an Irish nanny for my brother because there were so few Chinese around at that time.

Thanks for sharing! He still lives in the Sunset today, and we did shoot this footage a bit ago, so some things may have changed more since then. I’m sure a ton of businesses were affected by the pandemic though, as it did anywhere else in the Bay. I’ve read about all the efforts in the Sunset to get people out again though, so I’m definitely happy to hear it’s been very active again! Parking in that area has always been tough when going to eat out there lol. Very true that the area historically before the 70s wasn’t much Chinese yet, we could have added in the Irish history before too, so appreciate your feedback. Thanks for watching!

Great video! Being an SFSU alumni, these were my stomping grounds for delicious foods! Now I'm in the east bay and wondering if Brandon's family restaurant is still open in San Leandro? I would love to give it a try and support local. Please share the info if it's still open. Thanks!
