I grew up in the outer sunset. Raised by Sicilian immigrants. Growing up I noticed many of my friends came from immigrants too. Indians, Chinese, Albanian, Philippino , Russian…many different ethnic backgrounds. It was a melting pot. That’s why food was diverse and great there. People brought their own unique food culture and shared it. Most of those families are gone now but the small mom and pops still standing, they’re probably pretty good. Go support them. God bless SF.

I love the fact you're covering the Sunset where I've shopped and eaten for the past 30+ years. In addition to Irving and Noriega, there are lots of great Chinese restaurants on Taraval, beyond 19th Ave. This is where you'll find a concentration of more northern Chinese cuisine, like dumplings and soup noodles. BTW, these northern cuisine restaurants are a result of new immigration patterns whereas early immigration was from southern China, hence lots of Cantonese restaurants. It's great that there's such a diversity of Chinese food available. (note: I know you [Victor] know all this, but I thought I'd add more info since many of the commenters thus far seem unfamiliar with the Sunset neighborhood.)

Growing up in San Francisco during the '70s and '80s, I have cherished memories of the city. Back in the day going to Chinatown was an all day Saturday event - Dim Sum in the am and then grocery shopping. You went to the butchers, fishmonger, and produce store. Mom use to buy a bag of long bones to make broth and remembering we were sucking out the bone marrow before it became popular. Because we did not have a car, we took the Muni, 38 Geary bus from the Richmond district to get to Chinatown. Irving St in the Sunset District and Clement Street in the Richmond District were an excellent alternative for those who lived in the Sunset and Richmond.

Growing up I had an aunt who lived on 17th and Irving. It was always a treat to go visit her and my cousins during the holidays. We'd walk Irving and either eat or order out at Sam Tung. They moved to Seattle around 8 years ago so I haven't been back, but glad to see Sam Tung is still doing well and a local favorite.

Pandesal, butter, and over easy egg. Kind of addicting and simple. I’m not a baker, but a couple seconds in a preheat oven, the pandesal’s a bit fluffy and firm. Slide some butter in between and add a cooked egg. I’d eat it even if it goes cold; left in the microwave.

08:00 Oriental Seafood restaurant: I found only swiekiau (how the Indonesian call it) or shrimp dumplings (they call it here), something like wonton but in different shapes with pork, shrimp, & ear mushrooms. Delicious!!! The owner of the Mini Pots somehow is successful to break "the curse" of the location. Uncountable type of restaurants occupied that space but failed. The Mini Potsticker is the 1st one, I believe, who is successful. There is always people waiting outside for their orders or to be seat in.
