Westminster Abbey is Anglican and is where English coronations take place. Westminster Cathedral is Catholic and is the Cathedral for the Roman Catholic Diocese of London.

I visited the cathedral yesterday for Holy Mass (after joining the confessional queue of about 30 in front of me) and I have always loved to visit. I hope they don't change the upper part of the building as I think the dark above the beautiful colourful lower part adds to the mystique. Thank you Father for this tour of the cathedral as I learnt more about this lovely place of worship during this past hour on KZbin than I have while visiting in person! Pax

I don't think they will ever have the money to decorate the upper parts. The cost would be truly prohibitive. I too like the way the upper part has aged.

very much agree, the dark brick above gives the impression of a numinous , vast and distant domain . Hopefully it will all be left as it is now .

A very much appreciated video tour. I had the pleasure of visiting the Cathedral recently, a fantastic building. The evening mass with the choristers' from the cathedral school is a really spiritual and uplifting experience. I recommend a visit.

As a very young man I recall attending High Mass at the cathedral, celebrated by Cardinal Heenan. Though by then the novus ordo was well established, His Eminence retained the ad orientem manner of celebration, along with Roman style vestments. It was interesting to hear the Canon hint that this manner of celebrating the eucharist might one day be restored at the Cathdral. One can only hope so, especially as the current Holy Father is known to favour it.

Lolz: During Mass on a Sunday in May, one of the Altar Servers,a very tall 16 yr old boy, fainted dead away right in front of the Cardinal! His mouth fell open in shock! It was a moment like a Norman Rockwell painting! His head hit that marble floor and he dropped the crucifix,too. It took 4 grown men to carry him away. He was ok after a while! Poor baby! Just got too hot up there!

I’m totally confused. As I’m from the States, i did not realize there is Westminster Abby and Westminster Cathedral. I thought Abby and Cathedral were used interchangeably.

The Abbey is mostly hard to enjoy because parts are closed to the public. And it's Anglican. Westminster Cathedral is completely open for everybody and celebrates mass several times a day - and is Roman Catholic.

Westminster Catedral is Roman Catholic, it was completed in the 20th century (1910), it has was a neo-byzantine style.

Westminster Cathedral is like an oasis in a sea of mediocrity as over the decades since 1960 Westminster Council have succeeded in destroying adjoining Victoria street with bland modernity.

The cathedral is very unusual. I like it. But, as you made a comment on London city planning. I could never understand why it appears Londoners have no respect for the city going back hundreds. Architecture is boring, horrible, offensive. I’m referring to the more modern variety. Also, if you look at some of these churches, like St. Paul’s that i remember from Charles Dickens novels, it sits right in the middle of what i think as a city square, which buildings that have been built up to it. Very odd.

Why is the ceiling black? It looks like it’s unfinished. Even grim, any answers?
@franciscanfriars
@franciscanfriars 5 жыл бұрын
Ave Maria! Yes, it is unfinished. Some of the side chapels have been completed. Part of the problem of getting it finished is that some people have actually taken a liking to it as it is.

While I appreciate the spiritual peace, holiness and richness enclosed within the boundary of this cathedral, and the materials used, somehow I get the impression that as aesthetics and colours go, the matching of different parts was not so harmonious in that the square columns were much too close to the round columns, the arches too close to the square doors and square columns. The marbles had too many squarish points which tend to be aggressive in their projection and seem to be too voluminous. The round curves tend to be more gentle. The subdued colours selected do not brighten up the soul and one needs to "get used" to the atmosphere created in that building, which seems to be designed by someone who was a little colourblind. One cannot help thinking that it is somewhat of a dismal place, not readily understood or clearly expressed and where someone would retire for the sole purpose of recollecting himself without having too many distraction, which I suppose should be a good element in a cathedral, as it is not meant to be a museum. Sometimes the close coloured coloured marbles, changed their rate of colour much too quickly and the style in different areas does not provide for the continuity of the whole cathedral but rather caters for individual chapels. Selecting so much marbles from different places on earth many have been a good social idea to bring people together, but in such a case the unity as a whole was not achieved. The speed at which it was built in under ten years from 1895 to 1904 and the nature of the design seems to indicate that finances were low and rather than spending what money was available in decorations, and complex spherical volumes with their longer building time , the accent went on unembellished size and volume as it seems that in those days, heights and volume to praise God was a requirement that needed to be shown and included in churches. Someone seemed to have forgotten the rule that a increasing a straight line is proportional to the length but increasing an area or a volume to paint and decorate the finances are proportional to the area and volume concerned and "x^ 3" is a heavy burden to build and maintain. Considering that this building was meant to be a holy place to retire to and pray, rather than admire the decoration nor the design, I would say that it fits that bill perfectly. The " show of grandeur" in the design and embellishment was restricted, not that the wanting was not there, it is very clear that the grandeur was wished for, but the finances and the time were not available. Reflecting on the role of a cathedral one could say, that a lot of peace and a degree of spiritual holiness are inbuilt and in this case one should not look for any other qualities , but we are all human and in building any place of worship, any religion, tend to lavish a lot on the unnecessities, about which, some tend to be more proud of than the essential substance in life.

The UK should give Westminster back to the Catholic Church along with every other church, monastery, etc that they stole. They should also repay the hundreds of millions of dollars they also stole.
