Every car has the VIN ( Vehicle Identification Number) stamped on the engine AND transmission from the manufacturer. With the VIN, the mechanic can call the dealer and find out what kind of transmission came in the car. The transmission shop is the best place for today's cars. Cheap isn't the best way to go.
@fashionforwardmom2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, this is not required by the NHTSA VIN standard. Some OEMs still use the same 10-digit VIN patterns for automatic and manual transmission vehicles, meaning that VIN alone will not be enough to determine the vehicle's transmission type.

I’ve been a professional tech for over 15 years. Both independent and dealership, scab work and union. Every shop I’ve been at allows us to work on cars off the clock. The only real rule is we need an RO to cover shop insurance. Usually just a general inspection that’s free. The other two things are etiquette… the customer is someone I really know like close family or close friend, and I already know the job. I know it can be done before that lift is needed for paid work. So that might be the next day the shop is open. Some shops, that’s more my lift even on my days off. So I can come in on my day off and use my lift and shop tools… just gotta stay out of the way of folks on the clock.
