I think one of the the factors that does help in giving us a proper sense of Self, and in helping us realistically define what the martial art is to us, is growing up a Chinese household. Just in the usage of the terminologies in everyday life. I think it's the same with a traditional Japanese household. Ideas, concepts, worldviews. There is a cultural factor to it that does offer clarity. But it can obsfucate too, IF it is misused for that intention. Popular media, image based, made it even more confusing to the masses in the modern age. We get so sucked into Imagery and Myth, and mistake THAT for Reality. The philosophy is lost often to the sensationalised imagery. Even dedicated practitioners fall into such delusions. They start thinking they're invincible just because they can cripple a guy with one strike. They forget it is not so much that THEY that are so tough, but simply that the human body is fragile and breakable. A single dengue mosquito sent me into intensive care for four days. Reality bites like that damn mosquito.

The problem is we’ve seen almost every martial art be effective in a fight Except wing chun. Someone who trains wing chun but uses something else in the fight doesn’t count. Wing chun was the second or 3rd martial art I trained and I enjoyed it and it looks so cool. It’s just shite in fights and absolutely insane if someone has a weapon.

I’m glad someone finally said it. You know you almost never see a Kung fu guy debate someone who does mma or kickboxing on why Kung fu is or isn’t effective.

But….a good tree, in the hands of a master craftsman becomes an exceptional chair, table, stool, etc. You wouldn’t want to build a great piece of furniture from a rotten tree.

I absolutely love this... I'm a prior LEO and a current LEO firearms and DTAC isntructor... I also still coach and teach MMA... Adams analogies and examples are so spot on!!! The differences between sport, life/death/combatives, self expression, cultural learning... these are all different facets of the martial arts... each requiring their own dedication and thought. There is no one answer! I had a military and LEO instructor tell me that martial arts are what you do with someone, combatives are what you do to someone. This is an amazing interview! Keep up the good work brutha!!!

Adam Chan. A master. No doubt. I don’t always do things his way neither. I’ve been very vocal about that. He’s very mature. Handles it like a boss. Confident. 😉👍💥💯 he’s a real dude. 💯

Styles are irrelevant. The majority of striking techniques that work in a combat sport like muay thai as an example revolve around 10-15 core techniques with variations. Those same techniques, with modification made for no protective covering of the hand, will also work in a self defense situation. Classical or traditional martial arts are not effective for ring fighting or self defense. You should practice traditional martial arts for minor skill enhancements and cultural immersion. At this point in time, the question of whether a style that is not combat sport oriented is highly effective has been solved. So has the rebuttal of whether it's the person or the style that makes styles effective. Athletic conditioned individuals with combat sports training will usually win over non conditioned individuals with traditional martial arts training.

@@lionsden4563, I agree although i might add a few things that he said doesn't sit well with me like he doesn't teach sparring to his students. Also, he hasn't done Wing Chun since 1991 and still taught his art because he loves it. He is not a fighter but teach self defense to some of his students. If you look at his contents on his KZbin channel, i would say 90% of his techniques doesn't work in real life situations.
