The fact that the title says SAT math problem when it's basic 3rd grade math is astounding.

it is one 1 because first you do the brackets because of bodmas which is 10/2(5) then you do 2x5 which is 10 so 10 divided by 10 is 1 and you do multiplication first because it has higher priority but thats just my take on doing it
@Eight69

Multiplication does not have higher priority. What have you been learning? It's 25.

Mr @mad what is the answer to 10×1/2 × 5. I am using the rule for division . Furthermore it is not 2 ×5 it is ÷2×5. I am only in grade 5. Maybe I am wrong. Which everway I look at it my answer is 25. I humbly bow to your superior knowledge. Thanks

Also if you want to multiply first then 10×5=50÷2=25.

It is 25. Although on most PEMDAS lists multiplication is written before division, but they are of equal importance and is evaluated from left to right like addition and subtraction.👍

there is also rule called BODMAS Which stands for bracket, order, division, maltiplication addition and subtraction so here we get have to do first divisiom so after division doing that i get 1 so is it right and is it ok use BODMAS rule or is there any perticular situ we use diff rules

The answer is 1. 2(1+4) is all one term. Therefore 10/10=1

The correct answer is 1 as according to the style guide of the American Mathematical Association implied or juxtaposed multiplication is done before division. Most calculators also follow that with the exception of TI. At Texas Instruments they say that the multiplication should be given precedence but American school teachers say no. The higher precedence of implied multiplication is so obvious that it is not typically even mentioned. People do it naturally. Only when they try to use some rules like PEDMAS do they not follow it. Nobody would interpret "sin 2x" as "sin(2) * x" You made the mistake at 1:50. You added the multiplication sign. You changed the expression.

@@okaro6595 i don't think ive ever heard a reliable source that interprets PEMDAS with Multiplication before Division instead of interchangeable and Addition before subtraction instead of them also being interchangeable considering both are the same thing (as in division being multiplying by fractions and subtraction being addition with negatives) i'm not too well versed with math since im still just a student and im not putting this up as some sort of challenge, i just want some kind of reliable source that teaches PEMDAS this way since i didn't find any in the admittedly short time i looked for one

another way of thinking about it would be by rewriting the division symbol with a / which we are more used too. because there are no parenthesis around the '2(1+4)' we dont treat it as one. so when rewriten our equation is (10/2)*(1+4) a pair of parenthesis was is added to show that this division does not involve the term (1+4) in the denominator. evaluating this new expression leaves us with 25.

Ik about the left to right thing, but I feel like it would be 1 because the 1+4=5, and so you'd have: 10÷2(5) And then you'd do 2*5 first cuz the parenthesis, resulting in 10÷10=1 You're probably right tho
@water7962
@water7962 7 ай бұрын
the parenthesis going first only means things inside the parenthesis go first, if a number that isn't in parenthesis is next to one that is in parenthesis ( ex: 2[5] ) then it is multiplication

10÷2×5 =5×5=25. The mistake most of you are making is saying 2×5 whereas it is ÷2×5. 10÷2×5 is the same as 10×5÷2=25.

@@therivernile1993 turning 10/2(5) into 10/(2x5) to prove that the 2x5 should be grouped and done first is circular logic so not sure why you think it proves anything also, quick explanation onto why i say that its circular logic (so i don't have to reply to this comment again) implied brackets of division means that you're putting the brackets around everything being divided [ ex: (10)/(2) ] but in your explanation using this, you group 2x5 together as the thing you are dividing 10 by, this is wrong since you need to prove why 2x5 should be grouped together in the first place which you have yet to do this is how i think this math problem should go 10/2(1+4) -original equation 10/2(5) -parenthesis first of course 5(5) -using PEMDAS, since multiplication and division are interchangeable they are done left to right, nothing shows that 2(5) is all part of the denominator since there are no parenthesis with both 2 and 5 in them [2(5) isn't the same as (2x5)] 25 -multiply 5 by 5 and heres the answer

@@Eight69 always 1: scientific notation, to be 25 you should write (10/2)(1+4). If you don't write the first parenthesis, the 2 is affecting the denominator of the fraction. Basic maths.
@Eight69
@Eight69 7 ай бұрын
@@XPL80 You don't need brackets to show that in 10/2(1+4), 10/2 must be done first because it's on the left. 10/2(5) has multiplication and division so it needs to be done left to right. It's basic PEMDAS/BODMAS.
@XPL80

@@Eight69 come on, just simply substitute the 10 for X and the 4 for Y: X / 2(1+Y) = X / (2+2Y). The way you guys do maths makes no sense, nobody else in the world but americans are having trouble with this. Even using your own senseless rules, the 2 is multiplying the parenthesis so should be solved within the parenthesis step.
@Eight69
@Eight69 7 ай бұрын
@@XPL80 My rule? I didn't invent PEMDAS/BODMAS. I'm also Indian, not American. Anyways, 2 by itself is not being multiplied with the parentheses. x/2 as a whole is distributed. So x/2(1+y) would be ((x/2)*1)+((x/2)*y)=(x/2)+(xy/2)=(x+xy)/2. Distribution is multiplication, not parentheses. Think of x/2 as a fraction being multiplied with 1+y. Do you multiply 1+y with the numerator or denominator? Because you are trying to multiply with the denominator rather than the numerator which is completely wrong.
