Saw two 88-C cars in this film. They were quite rare in the 70s !!!
@johnhaynes903010 жыл бұрын
Those double 8's on that reg didn't represent the late 80's. And if you think about it logically, I grow up in the place and most of the people that had 88c cars drove them in the early 90's and so on cuz hardly anyone could afford a new car. So would you say this film looks like it was filmed in the 90's? I don't think so very much. I remember the 90's in cork very well.
@AdamMcCarthy7410 жыл бұрын
John Haynes the video shows cars driving over Eamon de Valera and Michael Collins bridges. They weren't built until 83/84. The 88 C reg on the cars did mean they were registered in 1988.

This documentary late 1980s footage as the Merchants Quay Centre is also featured which was not opened until 1988 after demolition of many derelict buildings on the old Merchants Quay. The anchor tenants would be Roches Stores department store including their new modern Supermarket along with Marks & Spencer and Dunnes Stores. Later Roches Stores would hand over Supermarket to Caulfield McCarthy who operate SuperValu while Debenhams now lease from Roches. Merchant Street off Patrick Street gone!

I love that this is not a romanticized "come look at me!" type video. It's the hardworking, grist and grizzle of the people who worked and lived in Cork. Love the music. So it seems it is the 1980's late, as everyone is shouting! I love it all the same. Cork has much history in the making of the Republic of Ireland. Many, Many HEROS! Thanks for uploading, as I probably will never get to see the beautiful City of Cork.

Interesting - a video about Cork in the 70s and someone sees a hasbara opportunity to make a plug for 'Irish War Guilt + the Jews'....... every country has its bright and dark bits - Israel isn't doing so well in publicity stakes these days. Maybe you could write a few words about how many Syrian refugees Israel has taken in since the start of that war? and what did the Jews do for the Irish when we were under the heel of the British boot since the Tudor plantation? How much did they contribute to Famine relief when a million people or more starved to death outside the doors of their mud cabins? How many did they help when millions of Irish were forced to emigrate in coffin ships to a life of hardship? Where were they when the 1798 rebels were slaughtered like cattle by artillery on Vinegar Hill - women and children mostly.

Definitely no earlier than the late 1980s. Apart from the 1988 reg cars mentioned by some earlier posters, there's even a pub called The Joshua Tree which has gotta be named after the U2 album rather than the California tree. U2 were mega then, and the album was released in 1987, so a film no earlier than 1988

Interesting footage - is it yours? But I don't think it's the 70s - there are car regs from at least 1988, and Merchant's Quay was still a line of mouldering old buildings when I was young (in the 70s). The refurbishment you see in the video was carried out in the 80s. Plus the fashions - mullets still in evidence, white socks (a no-no in many discos at the time). At 13:40 we see a group of lads line the bridge - a common sight in years gone by. Usually they all had polaroid sunglasses, to cut the glare on the water and see if any salmon were passing by..... I don't know if that's what's happening here, maybe just enjoying the sparkling waters ona sunny day. The city skyline has changed dramatically since this was filmed.

Irish Rail ( or Iarnród Éireann) did not come into being until 1987 as a separate company from parent holding company CIE (Córas Iompair Éireann) as far as I recall. The same year Bus Éireann and Dublin Bus were also born. The opening showed Cork station in the Irish Rail logo which was simply CIE for both Rail and Buses all over the Republic of Ireland during the 1970s.

No video camcorders in the 70's was obviously not shot on film. Than again the 88 C reg gives it a way. No matter what you could try and do, even if you had a 4k camera you couldn't make a city or large town look good in Ireland in the 80's. Except for small villages and the countryside the place was a dump. You'd know the NCT didn't exist.
