So many amazing comments here, really good to read through them, impossible for me to reply to them all, but thanks, I read them all :) Had a great day out at the Video game expo, if you could have seen my face when I saw Defender, I had hairs on the back of my neck stand up, me and that game have much history from my early teen years. The short story is in my dinner break as a kid there was me and Gary Lee, the tow best players in the entire town, we battled for that number one spot for a year :) A lot of people avoided the game due to all it's controls and at the time complex game play, well it was compared to space invaders and Galaxian. I remember one lunch time playing one game for an hour, I made myself late for next lesson :) Got the my personal best too. When I played this again at the expo I lasted 7 minutes but got the high score, I can't even imagine how high my score must have been as a kid lasting a whole hour. It's such a great game, fast paced and tactical, you really need to know what you are doing, I remember walking out the place then remembering that I should have shot all the swarmer pods, releasing shit loads of swarmers then pulling them all to one side of the screen and smart bombing them, damn :) It starts to come back as you play. Tell you what really shocked me, I mean really shocked me, Cass also remarked on this, the kids trying to play even basic games like Space invaders, Donkey kong, Outrun etc were terrible, they literally could not do anything that had no controller attached. I can't ever remember that being the case when I was a kid in arcades, I honestly believe the standards have dropped in kids, I was embarrassed for them. Health wise am plodding on, waiting for two nasty scan results, each day that goes by is a sense of relief as I know if it's serious they will be in touch in like 24-48 hours, am now about 36 hours in so :) Am doing a few revisits, one of them NMS once they fix key rebinds and then next week is a busy one for reviews, I am raring to go :)

It was years after my first play of Defender that I realized how the control issue was needlessly difficult. The thrust and reverse buttons could just be replaced with left and right controls, making a normal four directional joystick. Instead they insisted that players rewire their brains to accommodate their awful control system. It was such a shame because the SFX and horrific theme of Defender is amazing; make a fruitless last stand on Earth saving the humans before the planet is inevitably annihilated. Only it doesn't end there. If you like, you can cling on to your life for a precious few moments in the merciless void of space before the invaders finally overwhelm you. Robotron had the same dystopian theme come to think of it, and was published by the same people.

A very high percentage of kidney stones is created by combining oxalic acid with Vitamin C in your diet. You think you are eating healthy but you are not really. It wasn’t until computer games began to evolve a bit more and they made more games that fit my taste did I finally keep a computer permanently set up. 2:00 atari - ahhh... the memories The jaguar was so far ahead of its time. It was basically the Nintendo 64 long before Nintendo even started coming up with the design and concept. It was an awesome system, I own about 40 games for it. The design for developers was difficult at the time which is one reason why it didnt catch on, but 3D games and such a full decade before development from Sony and Nintendo was amazing to see. Imagine where the state of gaming would be today if it had worked out.

My late uncle had an Atari Jaguar, I'd go round and play it when I was a kid. The controller was as uncomfortable as it looks and I found I had to sort of hold it at an odd angle for my little hands to work it. There'd be game-specific paper overlays you'd slide over the telephone keypad like thing. He had the Tempest game which was awesome. He had Alien vs Predator which I was hopeless at and kept getting lost in, and the guns felt weedy. And finally he had Doom. Obviously great. Still, I much preferred my Amiga 500. Gravity Power, Syndicate, Sim City, Settlers, Cannon Fodder, Speedball, Knights of the Sky... and the greatest magazine in the universe, Amiga Power. Ahh, those were the days.

Also had a great shooter called Tempest 2000 as seen in your video and a really good version of Doom. I think it was one of the first versions of Doom on a console! The controller took a bit of getting used to but wasn't too bad eventually.

I've had a kidney stone, I can sympathize. That was agony. My first console in the 80s was the Colecovision, but of course I played the Atari 2600, Intellivision, and the Odyssey 2 first. I still have a Commodore 64 that works, fantastic system. I do have a Jaguar with the CD and quite a few games (Tempest, Brutal Sports Football, Defender, Alien vs. Predator, Baldies, and Primal Rage). It's in storage with my other consoles (my newest ones are the N64, PS1, and Sega Saturn), and the controllers are monsters indeed! It's weird that Doom wasn't played more. I just went through the original game, Doom 2, Plutonia Experiment, and TNT Evilution. Still great today. Love Defender too. Wasn't very good at it but excellent game.

I snapped their hand off for the general, no way I wanted to be any part aware when they were inserting that thing!

2:05 The Atari Jaguar controller had all those buttons for games like Doom. You used the numbered buttons to switch weapons, just like a keyboard. It was a superior controller for PC ports because of all the buttons. The Jaguar came out just before the Saturn/PlayStation and was a big flop (hardware was good though), but it's still quite insane that you hadn't heard of it because it had hype and lots of advertising before release. I'm surprised how little you seem to know about many of these things in comparison to me considering I was probably a lot younger than you at the time.

Also funny to hear such a big computer gamer like yourself has some serious black spots in their knowledge regarding video games! :-) The Jaguar controller does look hilarious with that numeric keypad, but as far as I remember games were sold with little overlay cards that would go over those keys and allow you to turn them into extra function keys specific to the game you were playing. Interesting concept… Thanks for sharing! I loved playing Doom, Raider, and AVP on my Atari Jaguar. It was very much ahead of its time.

Have to agree that retro gaming is so much fun. So much so I have just bought a two player arcade machine with 8000 classic games on. For me and my daughter to play we have both being playing them on a PC and we have more fun with these games than today's.. what does that tell you.. 😀😀😀 great vid 👍👍

It's a decent enough game but I wouldn't use it to show off the Amiga, there are much better options.
