Kaskaskia (live just 20 minutes from) is an awesome place (where an Illinois town ended up on Missouri side) with a LOT of historical significance.. The oldest Church west of the Mississippi, the 2nd Liberty Bell, Lewis and Clark origins, and a the sad story of what could have been Americas largest city got swallowed in the watery grave, complete with an indian curse that could very well explain all the flooding. (Oh yes lots of indian history)

Im almost a little sad they didn’t mention that the 1927 flood inspired Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy to write “When the Levee Breaks.” Thanks to them, and the cover by Led Zeppelin, the song has become one of the most enduring representations of that flood. I’m a inland pushboat captain, and I couldn’t imagine paddling down this thing. I’d say from Cairo to Baton Rouge, wouldn’t be bad due to lack of fleets. But from Baton Rouge to New Orleans you are in the danger zone with fleets lining almost every bank around every bend. From Baton Rouge down you get into ship traffic. Im more upset the highest I’ve been is Vicksburg, would love to pilot every mile of the river and the rest of the inland waters, but for now I’ll settle for that.
