I go camping here in Scotland maybe 10 times a year, year round. The jääkäripuukko 140 has been the knife I take with me almost every single time since I got it maybe 3 years ago. Specifically because it's so good at batoning, it means I don't need to lug an 800g axe head up and down a big hill. I've had some chilly nights where I've had to process a whole night's worth of firewood with just that and a Laplander pruning saw, and it's done the job no problem, every time. Scandi-vex is the way. DBK boys taught me that!

God i love 80crv2. It may rust, it may not be the most high tech but its just so damn reliable. My first ever knife was a Puukko with a cheap 80crv2 blade by Laurin Metalli. Not knowing how to use a knife i abused the shit out of it but it always held up. That shit is indestructable but still has great edge retention all considered. Nowadays i have my Jaakaripuukko and Peltonen ranger, still in 80crv2, still by Laurin and i would never want anything else.

@lynnjr457 Same. I blackwashed all my Terava blades with an hour long soak in Star-San (good white vinegar will work, too) and I'm not having any incidental rust now. The Skrama is so capable. Half hatchet, half machete, half knife. 150% awesome.

I have used 80crv2 in making my own fixed blade knives and it has been great, highly underrated in my opinion and ya its not "super steel" but it is one of the toughest in my personal testing of simpler carbon steels. 🤫 dont tell people how awesome it is the price will go up 🤣, the price will go up either way who are we kidding.

G'day Pete, I've had such a good time with the Skrama 240, (yes predominately through our Aussie hardwoods), that when it came to filling the hole of getting a tougher scandi, (more than a partial tang Mora for exapmle), this one was it, and yep, no great surprise, outstanding too !!!!!! ...... and for the moolah, excellent value I'd say. Dunno what the specific handle composition is, ......... but it's a winner !!!! ...... together with ideal contouring. And I'm with ya mate, the leather sheaths are great, (with danglers) ...... perhaps without being premo; certainly worth a bit extra dough IMO and ultimately, I couldn't ever see a need to replace 'em. Incidentally, neither has spotted up in over a year and I'm only a stones throw away from the briny. In fairness I do keep my blades clean between uses, (not via the dishwasher, you heathen, ...... gangster slap, LOL), but still, compared with other carbon steels, I cant understand it. Though I guess I don't have to understand it, ..... just enjoy it ; ) Cheers Duke.

PETE...I realize you didn't ask for my opinion, BUT...I noticed your dog has a nylabone or a gumabone in it's mouth. I'm a retired dentist. Nearly 30 years ago, my rough coated collie dog split her mandibular first molar on a nylabone. Turns out that is a very common dog injury with nylabones and gumabones. It took me over 5 hours to do a root canal and composite post and core build up on her tooth. It also cost me over $500USD to rent the veterinary surgical suite. Today, that injury repair would most likely cost you $2500-$3000USD! Those are your dogs so you can do as you please. I just wanted to make you aware of the risks. None of my dogs (border collies) since have gotten nylabones or gumabones. THANKS Pete!

We have a problem with our dog gnawing away until she gets pieces of them off (very jagged and rough) and then eats them. No perforated bowel yet, but we throw them away once she gets them chewed up. Bonus use! I use my Mora Basic to whittle down the sharp parts. Can also use a belt sander but it will melt a bit. It is tough stuff, no doubt. Bene-bones are the same material. I’m sure it’s non toxic and inert, we just don’t like the sharp shards a strong dog can get off.

@@JohnSmith-gs4lw The problem is the material. When the dog chews it, the nylon material compresses and stores energy. When the dog starts to relax, the material has a high powered spring-like action that forces the outer cusps of the upper teeth out towards the cheek and the inner cusps of the lower teeth inward towards the tongue. This spring-like action can split off the cusps longitudinally. This has all been documented over the past 30-40 years, although the manufacturer denies this is a common problem. I consulted with two of the leading veterinarian experts who did extensive research on this problem. Like I said above...I only posted this as FYI. You do whatever you feel is best for your pets.

I noticed you were having some issue while batoning the wood, something that may help with that is to turn the entire set up on it's head- upside down, if you will. Then strike the bottom of the piece you are batoning with the cudgel while the tip of the knife is resting on something such as a stump or other sturdy work place. In this way the blade is acting like a stationary wedge while the wood is being driven down onto the blade. You won't have to fight the impact as the object the tip of the blade is resting on will take the brunt of it.

G'day and thanks for another great video. Regarding your comment about the DBK knife, 'some people would argue that drilling through the tang weakens it'. WOW. I think that if you are going to break the tang on that knife because it has pins fitted then you have already exceeded the limitations of the human hand in being able to hold it. In short, you will break your hand before the tang. In my opinion, others will obviously vary lol. Keep up the videos mate. Thanks.

Holes in the tang don't weaken the tang if steel around the hole is at least as wide as the hole diameter. Most holes for knife handle rivets are the size of a #8 screw. Or about o.164" or 4.1 mm so if the tang of the strong arm is about 12 mm wide the hole isn't weakening the tang to any real degree.

The only dangerous thing about batoning that people should be a little mindful of is when your knife gets stuck and you grip a little beyond where the blade has cut to and try and lever it backwards and forwards to get it free. That's how you guillotine a finger off. I recall Advanced Knife Bro almost doing that once.

Now that you are a freehand sharpener and appreciate 80crV2.... for the love of God... please test the Rokka korpisoturi.... 80crV2 at 63 HRC... 5mm spine thickness so from the top it looks like an pry bar, but the rhombic grind makes it split logs like it was made for it, and it has this crazy aggressive steep bevel that makes it cut like an straight razor... that thing doesn't even dull on wood, would like to see how many times it cuts rope.. Most def my favorite fixed blade, it's like the Puukko 2.0

Imo the 140 is the perfect soldiers knife. It's cheap, it's tough, it's good quality has a good sheath and can perform all knife tasks as well as non knife tasks that most soldiers will put a knife through. Oh and it's lightweight. Any weight savings is a bonus. You could purchase a nicer knife like a BRKT but then you will constantly fret over any damage limiting it's use as well as worry about losing it.

Glad Pete mentioned 420HC. It apparently has a slight edge over 80CrV2 in toughness and edge retention, and of course far exceeds it in corrosion resistance. If they made the Skrama and puukkos in 420HC for a comparable price, that'd be somethin'!

I wish people would say cutting wood with a knife is always just for fun. I can't imagine you need to cut wood so small that a hatchet isn't the best tool. I love my fiskars hatchet. I am living in a wood burning stove heated home and grew up in one as well, I had never even seen wood cut with a knife until KZbin. I want to add that I own that knife and I have cut wood with it, but I admit to myself it's no hatchet.

It's mostly chinese origin steel, despite that - mostly chinese homage/clones are made of that kind of steel, rather look for some Esse/Ontario "inspired" builds. I've got an ESSE CR 2.5 knock-off made of DC53 and it's freaking great.

In the U.S.A. Walmart used to sell a version of the Gerber Prodigy that did not have the serrations. Made in the USA just like the other Prodigy model. I think it might have been a Walmart exclusive. So with that you got, basically, the same blade as the Strongarm with what I find to be a more comfortable handle (iirc the Prodigy blade may be something like 1/8 of an inch shorter, if that, but is otherwise identical) for less money. I bought one of those Prodigy models and, because I had it, never bought a Strongarm. I think the only advatage the Strongarm has is the modular sheath system. Anyhow, I liked the Prodigy enough that when Walmart closed them out at a reduced price I bought two more. I don't really use the Prodigy as an outdoor knife, as I have other knives I like for that, but more as a general purpose, utility fixed blade. Where I live, in East Tennessee, there are no blade length restrictions and it is not uncommon for people (guys) to carry a fixed blade or large folder on the belt, again, just for utility purposes for whatever need arises. Therefore, I sometimes carry the Prodigy when I am just out and about and no one in this area even bats an eye. I have an SRK that I have carried a little for the same purpose but tend to gravitate more toward the Prodigy. I do want to get my hands on a knife like you reviewed, here (not going to butcher the name). I do a little leatherwork, just for myself, so if I got one I would probably save a few bucks and make a sheath.

I also bought a Walmart version Prodigy during that closeout. Gave it a short convex with a final 20 degrees per side, which improves the wood processing. Much better handle than the Strongarm.

(Check out my channel for my customs) I use Lauren metalli blanks for all my custom knives and have made quite a few custom Skramas that my customers love… sure it rusts , but that just teaches how to take care of steel properly.. pound for pound its the Toyota of steel

OK, the steel and the cudgel are fine and all, but we have to talk about your cooking. Really. Perhaps you do it off camera after filming, but I have never seen you brown your meat (not to mention vegetables) in a little oil or butter before putting them into the cooking pot. Since you are on the internet, I can't help feeling you've seen enough cooking videos to know about browning, which helps the flavor of foods, and also creates a fond for additional flavor upon deglazing. So, what's going on here? Or are you just throwing completely raw stuff into a stew? Or is this just B roll?
