Glad you’re back. Feels like you haven’t done a video in forever. For those wondering about the tube overheating. You got to remember that a pedal is only running off of 9 volts to 18 volts depending on the pedal. 🤘🏻🤣

I tried an original Klon back around '93 at my local shop. The shop's owner ordered the Klon as a joke. In those days I think they were only sold through ads in the back of guitar mags. Anyhow, it was a good sounding pedal, but nothing earth shattering. He bought it for around $200-300, which even then was extremely steep for a pedal. He placed it in the display case to see if he could sell it. I don't think he did. Now, thirty-one years later, I cannot believe the hype over these pedals. I've tried many Klon clones and there are some good ones. The Wampler Tumnus is a very solid unit.

Cool sounding pedal!

The kit does not require soldering; just tightening of screws, washers, etc.

i kinda like it. i have a joyo knon clone and it's great. i think for me the magic of the klon is with the eq, it just seems to be in the right spot/ range. using it to push the front of an amp and just adding a little bit of dirt works for me

Hey, Robert. Thanks for showing this pedal. I saw your interview with Jim Hagerman and looked at his website and loved his tube drivenxpedals, but I forgot his and his website's name.

I was think 350 for a pedal with a tube so 250 is reasonable for sure. In the price range of some Keely and Wampler pedals among other boutique manufacturers. I got a Soul Food, Timmy, Golden Horsie and a NOTAKLON. Like the JHS pedal the best, plays very well with other OD's and dirt boxes.

Robert, if you ever come across a JIMS 800 from pedal TC Electronic I highly recommend it. It's a JCM800/JMP50 in a pedal with features like IR cab sim DI out (through cooperation with Celestion) and a USB I/O. It's the closest I've heard to a JCM800, but even more to JMP50 when dialed in just right. I think you might dig it. It's quite a ride.

Cool pedal, but I'm on the other end of the circuit, ..... the guitar. Rather than constantly goofing around with pedals only, I'm trying to improve on the guitar electronics and I have found Manley hand wound pups, Galaxie Model-43 X-Ray Editions with Elektrisola magnet wire is just awesome insane. (DCR: 13k ohms) And yeah, I have experimented with Duncans, Tesla, Lace Deathbuckers, DiMarzio, etc., so I kinda know the pups in a guitar make the tone and variations. Are ya "Manley" enough to use a solder iron and a screwdriver? Perhaps not, so, I guess, .... just be happy with what they "prepackage" in the guitars ya buy.

Mr J, wouldn't the tube heat up badly in an enclosed case?

I left it running for several hours and had no issues with it overheating at all.

Hilarious that this sounds so much better than an actual Klon. Swap in a 12AX7 and that thing would sound like a Metal Zone.
@hagerman_amplification5 ай бұрын
Actually, a 12AX7 does not operate well with this circuit...
@RobertWJackson5 ай бұрын
Nah, I wouldn’t even do that. This pedal EXCELS when it’s boosting the front end of an overdriven amp. The amp I was using in the full track demo (Laney IRT-Studio) not that have the gain cranked all that much. That was the TubeKlon enhancing the sound of it.

@@hagerman_amplification ... isn't HEAT going to be an issue?
@hagerman_amplification5 ай бұрын
@@miserychannel69 Nope. I am running this tube at about 1/2 power dissipation (or less), so it's not hot at all. You could hang onto it.

I disagree on the "Great Design" comment. There's not enough power to generate any thermionic emissions if you use the recommended power supply. I think this is a missed opportunity to actually use a high gain duo triode tube to drive gain stages in a Centaur style pedal. Sounds ok though.
@hagerman_amplification3 ай бұрын
Without the tube it makes no sound at all, so clearly enough thermionic emission! Keep in mind a 12AU7 can push 10mA easily at full heater power. Slightly starved (130mA instead of 150mA), the heaters in this design have no trouble producing the 0.5mA emission required for operation.

I bet your tube will burn up pretty quick and not to mention the circuitboard...a vent should be on pedals like this.
@RobertWJackson5 ай бұрын
Nah, I think that’s a myth. The Chandler/B.K. Butler Tube Driver doesn’t have a vent. The TC Electronic Tube Pilot doesn’t have a vent. The Bruce Egnater designed Fender MTG Tube Distortion doesn’t have it. It doesn’t need a vent.

@@RobertWJackson its way more likely to die from being knocked hard than heat. A preamp tube dying from its own heat is hilarious
