The harmony of a few strokes, strategically placed with two brushes, along with the use of only four colours, can have such an impact! A beautiful painting, Edo. Thank you. :)

I love the perspective and light you have got in the sky which adds so much movement and life to the painting, and the sky colours in the water are very beautiful. A very interesting and helpful commentary too, thank you so much Edo, a joy to watch :-)

Thank you Tom. I aim for going once over the paper and let it dry and leave it alone! cannot all the time of course! the best way to paint a watercolour is to touch the paper not to much. greens get dull if you wet them to much. certain pigments dissolve in the paper so that the sparkle disappears.

Such harmony of colours Edo! Beautiful. ( limited palette of course). My eye is led to the amazing central light. Just white paper, a nice change to raw sienna. I enjoyed watching your bold technique for the reflections too, and yet keeping the softness. Many of us dither over putting in reflections. I must try the bold approach next time. Thank you.
@EdoHannema-Watercolour-Art
@EdoHannema-Watercolour-Art 5 жыл бұрын
Raw Sienna is more transparent. (depends on the brand) but with yellow ocher you get nicer greens because it is more opaque! I like the soft reflections. but it is keep your breath in and go! hope it will dry okay! Keeping the whites must be planned! Thank you again Barbara!

I agree with others - your talking as you paint is very insightful. Also, using the hake brush is really a lot of fun! You mentioned you are not sure why you like "soft" paintings. Could it be that you live in an area with a lot of water, so the atmosphere is softer? I live in a dry, dry climate where light is strong with little moisture in the air. Soft atmosphere is seasonal with the rainy season. Sharp edges and brilliant colors, such as a flat blue vista for the sky without a cloud, is my norm. Keep up the demos - I love them. :-)

Yes I live in North Holland of the Netherlands. many years ago it was only water and a little land in this area. so a lot and I mean a lot is really watery here! I could do this painting with any other brush, but the hake is fun! it is cheap and does the job! Thanks Naomi!!

@@EdoHannema-Watercolour-Art I have a ton of hake brushes from a store's supply I bought out - enough to last a lifetime, well made, from Japan. They are hard to use and the challenge is the soft bristle and the long, flat shapes. 'Some are only an inch, others up to 8 inches (2.5 cm - 20 cm).

@@nmd1211 I must say the Ron Ranson Hake's from the firm Pro Arte are not so soft as other hake's I did buy in the past. They were so soft that I stopped using them the first time I used them. Then I visited a friend he gave me these two. They are much stiffer hairbrushes then the ones I did have. I have also one of the brand Vang. it is so big almost 4" to big for my quarter sheets!

I painted this with Old Holland paint. a very delicate pigment. You never can go to dark. to many brands are way to strong. thats why I always give the advice to buy student quality when you start. but in every book you will find that you have to buy artist quality?

Not to sound pedantic, but...if it matters to you Hake Brush is pronounced more like HAW-kay or HAW-keh ( Hah-Keh...right ! )
@joegriffin5851
@joegriffin5851 5 жыл бұрын
Well I also say HAKE not hawkay which I think is how our American friends pronounce. Hake is also what Ron Ransom said and he is probable the person most associated with this type of brush.
@brightstreamify
@brightstreamify 5 жыл бұрын
I say Hake, not Haw-kay, as this is how Ransom pronounces it in his demos. And it is, after all, his name on the brush. But more importantly its of NO importance. I think Edo's English is probably 100% better than your Dutch, it certainly is than mine, and we ought to be more than grateful for these wonderful watercolour demos! And you will note I have spelled it 'watercolour' not 'watercolor'! Does that matter, not in the slightest 😂
@marsbeads
@marsbeads 5 жыл бұрын
@ Renzo You are correct. The hake brush is pronounced Hah - Keh. The hake fish rhymes with Jake. Just because someone mispronounces it doesn't make it right. It's a Japanese word and it's pronounced Hah-Keh
