I just love your videos. Your channel is just so inspiring. I just started teaching art for middle/highschool because why not give it a whirl. You can do anything for a year. I try to have that same energy and charisma in my classroom that you have given me and so many of us with your lessons. Not sure if this is for me because I truly miss my studio life. I still dream of opening a community studio for my hometown. But anyway, love what you're throwing down and I'm excited for your new videos. Congratulations on the new baby! May the clay gods bless you, your family, and your pots.

Call it “get a grip” mug, “the gripper”, “gripper sipper”, haha love this stuff, “snug mug”, “hand me coffee”, “handle me”, lol love to play with words! Since you have kids “got your fingers” ... instead of got your nose.. oh, maybe “grab-n-go”, “grabber”, um maybe not, “gotta-Joe”, “snug a mug”...k over for now...you asked for it. This is the first time I’ve found our channel. Loved the vibe! I have six sons and you remind me of a couple of them...I love your energy. Here’s my rendition is “KISS”: “keep it simple silly”, or(otherwise) “keep it simply silly”! I’ll be back..

So happy you are back, but totally understand with new baby! Enjoy these times too. Interested in the crackle so I will be also looking forward to that one. My favorite part of the process is throwing. I brush on glaze so I watch KZbin and videos while while I work. The cake holder I made didn't sell after being out for sale for about a year now it holds my tablet in the studio so I can watch videos and KZbin. I'm sure yours will sell though! Keep doing what you're doing!

Well, of COURSE your videos were missed, but it is only right that you took some new papa time! PERSONAL PROGRESS REPORT: 6 days after I watched your demo at Art Wander, I got my *second-ever* chance to throw on a wheel. Guess what? I did much better on the first couple of steps than I had on my first throw. Not so great towards the end, but still...PROGRESS!!! I *KNOW* that intently watching you doing your thing helped me "get it" better. I also know that getting to throw for only about 15 minutes once or twice a YEAR is not going to get me where I want to be. So... I bit the bullet! I ordered my own wheel! Woo to the Hoo!!! Thank you *SO MUCH,* @Jonthepotter, for being a great inspiration! Nice stuff in this kiln. Looking forward to seeing more about that blue & green marbled clay and the crackle technique. I like some of the pocket mug name ideas. My votes go to either Hug Mug or Comfy Cozy Mug (of *DESTINY!!!* ). ~~Debz

Hi Jon, just wanted to say I thought I had watched all your videos and come across one where at the beginning your trying to talk in a British accent, I found this hilarious and rewound it numerous times. 😂 Good to see you back and your beautiful family. Love your insightful and positive vibes, would love to hear more of your general thoughts. As some for me have been encouraging. My little one now says "what's up guys Jon the Potter here" haha she's only 2. Wishing you all the way from England lots of success and I am sure it will follow you.

Hey Jon, nice to have you back. I noticed you have your wheel lifted to a height that you can stand at it and throw, I wondered if you would maybe talk about that in a later video? Ergonomics, reducing strain on your body. BTW I love the shot that you cut in to a few times, of you sitting on the chair looking shocked. That is a dad with a two week old baby... I remember that look! Enjoy the baby stage, they grow up so fast. xx

Since you suggested you make the mugs for the coffee shop a bit sturdier than mugs for general retail consumption might be, I wonder whether there are differences in the food-safe glazing materials and techniques that might be used for commercial food consumption environments as opposed to retail consumer home use.
@lindajordana7555 жыл бұрын
This might be dumb but why not make a large mug with the spirals. When it gets to almost leather hard, cut it down a side, cut the bottom off, overlap one end and shape it to make the pocket. Use the same bottom because the actual size of the mug is smaller than the original. This way the mug keeps a nice consistent shape and forms a neat looking conch like form.

I think mitten mug works well. Gripper Mug, is also fitting. It is definitely difficult to throw the opposite way. I usually only run into that, when a student has one going the wrong way. It takes me a moment to realize why I am suddenly terrible at throwing. I think your first mug was a bit off, due to your bat not being level. I could hear it wobbling. Also, you have a sagging element in your glaze kiln, that at least needs reppined.

Hey you. Good video. Could you do a video about drying times and how long each one takes to dry, and do you suggest covering with plastic? Do larger pots take longer? How do you know when its bone dry? Does it have to be completely dry before you bisque it? If you dry them too fast do they warp? I have so many questions, I can keep you busy making videos for a long time. Lol Thanks Sweetie! Peace, Deb

Funny Story: When I was learning to throw in college I was too embarrassed to do it during the semester because I was so bad, I focused on handbuilding instead. But over the summer I was determined to learn to throw. I practiced everyday. I was getting alright at it. So the next semester rolls around. I proudly display my new throwing skills to my professor, Gary Greenberg. He then rocks my world by telling me that my hands are the opposite of what they should be. I had been practicing wrong ALL summer long. He wouldnt let me change the direction of the spin of the wheel and instead made me learn using the opposite hands because he believed all great potters can throw both ways. So, now I can throw either way. But yes, there is no reason to be able to do that haha
