You may need to add more water if you see the water is drying up and your dal is not yet tender. It will take about an hour and a half or more depending to the quality of your dal. I love the Bengali take on this dish. I mean, I love the common chana dal made with garlic, onions and tomatoes, but I love the slightly sweeter approach you take with raisins and coconut. I just bought a big bag of chana dal and far too many dried bay leaves. My son comes home tomorrow from a semester abroad, and he loves Indian food. I really miss him, and since I’m one of those people who show their love by cooking good food, I think it is perfect timing. Thanks Bumbi! Yeah, so the bay leaves. I accidentally ordered 8 ounces of dried bay leaves. It came in this huge tub! I have no idea what to do with so many of them. Anyone have ideas?
@CurriesWithBumbi6 ай бұрын
If you keep the bay leaves in an airtight container it will keep good for ages. Also put some in the containers you store lentils/rice/sugar/beans as it repels insects. Enjoy with your son. Even I am one of those who express love through cooking good food 😀

Hi Bumbi 👋Wow this is an amazing recipe. I love that it has the golden raisins and coconut in it 😋 Most regular supermarkets here sell a very good selection of Indian groceries. Indian food is just so very popular here. But I still have to go to the Indian grocery stores to get some things that I need. I mostly get deliveries. I have had an extremely stressful week and have barely done any cooking. I am now unable to cook things that require the use of a stove top, temporarily. I have been trying to catch up with things. I am now trying to relax in my pyjamas, drinking herbal tea while watching your wonderful relaxing video 🙏Always a pleasure to watch. Hope you have a lovely weekend my dear friend 💕

Hi Bumbi 👋Hope you've been having a nice day. I made this today. (Recipe 153) It was absolutely superb . We really loved it. The golden raisins and the fried coconut go so very well with it. Every mouthful was delightful. We had paratha, salad and onion bhajis with it. We are still without gas. It has been a month now. I am waiting for the meter to be tested. My energy supplier contacted the company that tests the meter with the details of it. But we are still waiting for an appointment 😴🕰 I am getting used to using the electric hot plate. I actually really like it now. I have been using that and my instant pot. I feel like I am camping lol 😂 Thankfully my main ovens are electric. I also have a tabletop oven but the hot plate on it trips the electric out. I am constantly boiling electric kettles for hot water. Thank you for another delicious healthy meal. Well, at least I know that in an emergency I can make this chana dal recipe! I was able to find an organic chana dal that was vacuum sealed, double wrapped, and is a 7 lbs bag from a food bank a couple of months ago and I've been saving it ever since for emergencies! I'll see if I can find a smaller bag though of it so that I can make this recipe. But glad I know what to do with it now! I actually got it in the first place with trying your recipes in mind, though lately I've been eating more meat (no more pescatarian/vegetarian -- I was losing certain minerals and vitamins and getting health issues) so I've been eating less of the beans and legumes lately but still have a lot of regular chickpeas, lentils, and pinto beans. I need to get the gram dal though so I can try this, but just a small bag.

Regular stove top will probably take 2 to 3 hours at a lid covered consistent low heat to achieve the soft consistency that you want. Try soaking the dahl overnight with a teaspoon of oil to reduce the cooking time.

couldn't help notice the absence of garlic and onions in this recipe... is there any particular reason for that? just curious as most indian recipes i come across include them almost by default! i'm getting fairly confident at cooking curries from scratch and combining spices in wholesome ways so i'd love to learn the ins and outs of when and when not to include them and the reasons why :)
@CurriesWithBumbi6 ай бұрын
This recipe does not call for onions and garlic. You will be able to get the maximum flavor of chana dal cooking like this. Onions and garlic sometimes overpower the flavors. The subtle flavor of lentils gets masked using onions and garlic. Sometimes onions and garlic are also not added in Indian cuisine if following a strict religious vegetarian diet but in this case it is not for that reason. Personally I like lentils without onions and garlic.
