I absolutely ADORE my Abarth. I have been considering what next car I would buy, but I have a hard time finding anything as stealthy-fun as my 2015. I drive it HARD and it never attracts the attention of the po-po. And, as hard as I drive it, I am getting nearly 40MPG consistently.

I bought my 2013 Abarth new in July of 2013, with 101 miles. In the next few days, it'll be turning 68,000 miles. I've driven this car from Seattle to SoCal, to Salt Lake City, even a 6200 mile road trip to Wisconsin. I've taken this car camping more times than I can count. I've hauled things that you'd never dream of (always taking pics). I've had a couple of intermittent electric gremlins that occurred early on a couple of times, and then have not returned. I've had some trim issues that I've been able to resolve on my own. And zero mechanical issues. I knew when I bought this car, the 'reputation' of FIAT, but I didn't care. I'm also aware of the haters of this car/brand, and honestly, let 'em hate. This car has brought me the kind of driving joy and experience I never thought I have, coupled with a tiny footprint, yet capable cargo (you'd be surprised how much you can fit in one). Last November I left my 9-5 job to start doing delivery with Amazon, using my Abarth. I took out the passenger and rear seats-and the amount of boxes I can fit is the same amount people are putting in much larger vehicles. I use and abuse this car daily. I'm horrible with maintenance. Maybe my Abarth is an exception to the 'rule' but this car has happily taken everything I've done to it, and keeps going. Every single time I drive my car for deliveries, I am the luckiest man in the world...getting paid to drive the car I love. I have confidence that even with my maintenance 'schedule' that my Abarth will be around for many reliable years and miles.

My brother, a driving instructor, has a 2012 Abarth 500, which he`s had from new, it's done 220,000 miles, the only breakdown he`s had was a capillary pipe clip breaking on the thermostat housing at around 160,000 miles, that was repaired at the side of the road with a jubilee clip which is still there, I also took the catalyst off at 200,000 miles & it was literally as new inside, a compression test was done around the same time, the readings were still within factory tolerances. so they are reliable cars (as long as you service them correctly). Its had a couple of engine sensors go (temp & cam position), as well as an alternator, but when they went, it didn't stop the car, just put warnings on the dash &/or made it run a little rougher. Yes, some of the trim looks flimsy, but it does last (yours doesn't look like it was very well looked after) Yes, there's been minor annoyances, like a couple of door handle hinges & seat release levers breaking (has levers on his, not webbed straps), has occasional issues with the bluetooth, but overall it's been a great, reliable car that suffers new drivers every day who abuse it without flinching. Sadly it was rear ended (lightly) at the beginning of the year by an Audi & written off by the insurance company (largely because they undervalued it due to the mileage), but we had it back from them & I`ll get round to repairing it soon, because we're trying to get it up to half a million miles on the original running gear 😁 I`m from a Fiat family, between us we`ve had loads, & contrary to popular belief, they more reliable (when looked after) than many "premium" cars, like VAG... Sadly, because of their reputation, they`re very cheap on the used market, & because they`re so cheap, people are reluctant to spend money on even basic servicing, which is a shame, because when you do look after them, you basically have a car for life. And as you found out, they give you joy to drive, as do 99% of Italian cars! 😎

I had a Fiat Bravo 1.4 TJet (same engine as the 500 Abarth) and literally had 0 problems in 8 years and 220000Km, I've only done the regular maintenance. When I sold it, it was still running perfectly. Interesting, the Mercedes C class that replaced the Bravo had many issues despite the fact it costs 4 times more. I decided to sell it after 5 years to avoid getting into expensive repairs out of warranty...

I agree in that my 2013 Abarth with 93k has had less issues than my 2014 GLI with 72k. Both are tuned, the Abarth has Eurocompulsion installed at 13k and the GLI Unitronic stage 2 ECU and TCU at 50k. The Fiat, 1 window regulator under warranty, one clutch line not under warranty, one set of front brake pads. The GIi, one battery under warranty, one starter which was not under warranty, subwoofer rattle not under warranty, two sets of front brake pads, center cupholder is broken, driver seat wear is horrible on the bolster, and now I have the timing chain rattle. The Gli is faster, but the Abarth has my heart. If I sell it I will either buy another or go to a Alfa 4C.

The one I rented had horrible suspension. It crashed and bottomed over bumps and dips, kicking the car off-course. Also tons of body roll. Felt like I was sitting on top of the car instead of in it. If you live somewhere where the roads aren't beat up, I guess it'd be fine, but otherwise....

It may be under 10k to buy - but as a first car, this is probably going to be difficult and expensive to insure... And Doug said enough about quality. It may sound like a funny idea when Doug the fashion statement talks about it - but it's really annoying if you have to make choices all the time if you want to spend on repairs again - or allow it to crumble away... There are enough really good cars around for that kind of money...

Interesting fact about the Abarth logo... Carlo Abarth made his name performance-tuning the Fiats of the day, which were mostly rear-engined. Hence in the cars, as with the scorpion, the sting was in the tail. Abarth has an interesting history, well worth looking up, that makes the new Abarth models easier to understand... they're very much in the spirit of the race-winning originals.

Cost me $9750 with 35,500 miles (2013 convertible, mint, updated air intake and exhaust when purchased). It is so tiny that parking in the city is a breeze. In a parking lot, it is half the length of a parking spot and about 2/3 the width. Friends think the car is ridiculous until I take them for a spin... then they can’t believe how fast it is (I also upgraded the ECU and added a GoPedal).

173,000 miles on my Abarth, several rallies, crossed the country West-East and South North a few times! Driving it like I stole it! Car as a slight tune (195hp, thank you Eurocompulsion)... Only concerns I had was turbo #1 (factory defect), turbo #2 (failed after a few days, because of an idiot mechanic - has been fired -), turbo #3 (ok I blew that one) and one head gasket (at 150,000 miles). On the small little things side, the passenger seat latch is dead (you can still tilt the seat with the handle on the left side of the seat though), one window regulator died, one half shaft has been replaced at 150,000 miles and a few little insignificant things that I won't even bother to replace. The Abarth is one of the funniest little car to drive, it's fun in the canyons and it's hard to beat in traffic! And the good thing is that a second hand low mileage engine can be found under $1,000...

+Prowler9000 I believe that's where the temperature sensor would be for models with the optional automatic climate control. Obviously Fiat just kept it for both auto and manual climate control to keep things simple. I had a Mini Cooper S with auto climate control. One day I just took a flashlight to see what was behind that grill. And sure enough, there was a piece of circuit board with a little chip embedded onto it. I'm guessing that little chip is a temperature sensor.

hollywood fats i don't know precisely about this car but for my 2007 Fiat Bravo Fiat says that motors are designed for about 250.000 km. (155000 miles) without the need to open the motor. Fiat have the best engine technology from many years now and is still leading. So maybe you broke some minor parts of plastic and so on, but not the engine.
@superwolf95
@superwolf95 6 жыл бұрын
Fiat make the best engines and mechanics in terms of day to day driving experience, you will not enjoy driving a cheap car as much as a fiat. They're also quite durable (you can easily see old Fiat around Italy from all ages with 200-500.000km) but they're not reliable in the sense of "i can go around 40 thousands km without a single failure", it's always best to have a mechanic as a friend near you just in case. Luckily we have a lot of them good with Fiat and parts are really not a problem.
@Windof
@Windof 6 жыл бұрын
superwolf95 what failure? There is no mechanical failure before almost 250.000 km. The superior technology and reliability in motors is the only key that saved Fiat from financial default and permitted to buy Chrisler and to sell motors or to gain royalities from others car producers.

I noticed that too...the ones he pointed out are for the back seat. Those front holders may be the nicest I've ever seen on any car. Why? Best position! They don't block the radio or climate controls and seem to be in fairly easy reach!

I just bought a used 2013 Fiat 500 Sport (sadly not an Abarth) as my first car and am loving it so much. I'm definitely hoping to upgrade to an Abarth for my next car. I'm a very short person, so the size is very comfortable for me. My first 3 years of driving experience were in Japan, where so many of the vehicles are tiny. I drove a Suzuki Wagon R (not sure of the year but definitely old by Japanese standards) and a Suzuki Jimny (that was also rather old by Japanese standards). Neither of them were nearly as fun to drive compared to my current Fiat 500. I imagine the Jimny would have been fun if the first owner (my employer) had taken good care of it, but she was a terrible car owner and rarely paid attention to it, often letting it go far too long between oil changes, so the remainder of it's life with me was rather disappointing. It nearly died on me twice in half of a year and was in and out of the shop so frequently that it confused my neighbors because it seemed like I had a different car every other month. Anyway, I love my Fiat 500 and am excited to potentially upgrading to an Abarth XD

I love my Fiat 500 !!! Most fun car I have ever had. It feels like you can throw it around ... and it always fits into spaces other cars do not! In the city .... it is the greatest car ever! It loves parking lots and gas station lots .... Hell .... I have driven this car down sidewalks and out on piers! Absolute riot to drive the Fiat 500 !!! Low resale .... makes these cars a genuine value! Had this car up to 100+ on the freeway ... no problem! Not the best car I ever owned.... but ... certainly the the most fun! It is like driving around in a really badass golf cart! I love this car!

The reason why those rims are in such bad shape is because whoever owned this car never washed it that is what's called baked on brake dust and you'll get that a lot on the front of cars and if you got white rims you would think you would want to clean that off all the time depending on the types of breaks you install if you go with a more aggressive brake pad it will still be louder and make a lot of dust if you go with an economy pad they won't make as much dust but they won't break as well and whoever on the car never wash these rims so all that dust just kicked it in on to the paint and it said I see this on Mercedes and BMW cars all the time

DISCLAIMER for anyone who's Never driven an Abarth and comments with the usual "Oh it's just a FIAT, Fix It Again Tony, and Just Buy a Fiesta ST" comments; drive one of these and you'll understand why they're such great cars. Over engineered to provide infinite smiles per gallon, and they are actually pretty reliable overall. Quite a few US cars are way over 130k miles and have had very minimal issues. They're basically a little toy and by far the most automotive fun for the money.

I agree, the fiesta is a better car overall. But I bought the Abarth because it has the extra spice of idiocy. It's a dumb little car that shouldn't exist, was engineered to be silly, and it makes everyone that drives one giggle. The fiesta is a better car, but the abarth will make you happier. I would disagree about aftermarket potential though, (prefaced saying I know nothing about the fiesta's offerrings) as there is a whole lot that can be done to the abarth - getting it to 220-230 hp isn't terribly tricky.

I bought my 2015 Abarth brand new for 15k OTD to use as a commuter but even though I no longer need a commuter I just cant let this silly car go. I also own a 2017 Miata and have to say they are very close in the fun department with the Miata edging the Abarth out in pure driving joy but the Abarth is more usable especially with the rear seat delete. My car has been dead reliable and has held up very well. By 2015 they had all of the bugs worked out and updated the interior slightly. I think the Abarth is underrated.

I just bought one. The sport button ups the boost from 14 psi to 21 psi or something like that, and it definitely makes the throttle waaaaay more sensitive. I've been driving manual trans cars with lightweight flywheels for 20+ years now, and I've found this thing is actually a little challenging to drive at parking lot speeds because it wants to buck, and once it starts the throttle is so sensitive your foot even slightly moving as the car lurches creates this insane feedback loop. I've actually started taking it out of sport mode when I get into parking lots. Also the steering rack is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay slower than I was expecting it to be, and its the first thing I want to change about the car.

I can add some other things I noticed in quality failure of the Fiat 500. (from my Fiat I own) - When playing songs with some bass, some of the plastic interior covers begins rattering around. - The door handle breaks almost guaranteed after X years and you have to replace the whole door handle system by removing the door covers and such - The reverse gear isn't really synchronized and you're grinding the teeth if you put in the reverse while the car still moves a bit - The fiat emblem at the front and trunk begins to fade after some years - The quality of the turn signal handle is just utter crap. Even if you drive a cheap VW it is 5x better than the one in the Fiat (if you have the steering wheel in a weird position and try to use the turn signal, it makes a loud CRACK) - The AC is constantly smelling bad even tho it gets serviced every year - The lock on the fuel filler cap is easily pickable, basically the lock does not work. If you use enough force, you can get it open aswell - The right passenger seat is sometimes squeaking when someone drives with you
