Yea engine is from FCA, but the craftsmanship and electronics are from Japan which is a BIG plus. I trust Japanese electronics stuff in automotive much more than Italian, German and American.

The 1.4 FIRE engine has been around since '85 and is currently one of the most reliable small engines. Much more reliable than the Skyactive for example. Maybe stop being prejudiced and get some actual info.

Most Japanese cars sold in USA or Europe are NOT made in Japan. However, Mazda cars made there have a lot of problems with rust. Moreover, Japanese cars do have faults and quality failure. Btw, Italian engines are much better and reliable than those from Japan. Stereotypes are stronger than reality.

This is another car where he complains about things but doesn’t try the fully loaded version. The guys car he used is pretty basic. You can get nav, led lights, drivers assist, record monza exhaust via mopar. That would fix most of his complains. Also it take many of the abarth 500 engine mods. So you can get 200hp Easy.

My friend bought one, and I got to drive this car for a weekend. Let me tell you, this is a very fun and thrilling little car to toss around. The handling is precision sharp. The power delivery is thrilling and even scary at speed. The faster you go, the more this engine keeps pulling. The 6-speed manual is sublime, and it's fun to run through the gears. You ride very low to the ground. I would say the only negative is the interior space. I'm 5'9" and I adjusted my seat all the way back. Getting in and out requires a bit of contortion. I'd image if you're any taller than me, you're not going to be able to stretch your legs all the way out. Overall, a great sports car experience.

It doesn't surprise me people think this car is much more expensive than it really is. The back end styling is pure Maserati, and that's no bad thing. I like that at the front they pay clear homage to the original 124, but it's not at all retro. You really have to know the original 124 to know this car's styling inspiration. Very well done.

I own one of these, and this car gets A LOT of attention. A lot of people are not familiar with the Abarth badge and ask if it is an Alfa Romeo, Maserati, or even Ferrari. I have been surrounded by people asking about the car many times, in store parking lots, at gas stations, I have even had people walk out into the street while I was stopped at a light just to see the car. I took it to an Italian car show, and the organizers parked me with the Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Maseratis.My Abarth 124 got as much attention as the Ferraris and Lamborghinis, and a lot more attention than the Maseratis. being a brand new car, I don't think the organizers knew what it was. I doubt that the MX 5 owners can say the same.

I ask because the top gear review by Mat Le Blanc was pathetic for this car and they seamed to review it based on what they wanted it to be I.e the original 124.

marconico I believe that the North American spec Abarth probably weighs about the same as the Euro spec Abarths. I have never drifted the car so I can't say for sure but I assume it will as long as traction and stability control is off. I have done a couple of nice burnouts with it.

It should be also pretty easy to tune for way more power. I've seen some italians tune that engine for 360-400 horsepower in a 500 abarth. If you leave it at stock that engine is pretty bulletproof with given maintenence.

Very nice review. I have a 2018 Fiat 124 Spider Classica with the optional technology package (yes, I have a nav system) and I absolutely love it. I drove it from North Carolina to south Florida and back to visit family for the holidays. I found it very comfortable for a long trip like that. Then again, I'm 5' 2" tall so what's tight for you is roomy for me. I'm also a former Miata owner. Would I recommend the Fiat? You bet!

That Abarth has perhaps the best exhaust note I've ever heard on a four cylinder. And I gotta say, I myself do find it more attractive than a Miata. It has those crisp, athletic Italian lines that quintisized Italy for it's sports cars.

I did that all the time when I had a convertible. It might look weird, but it makes it quiet in the car. Add a wind deflector between the seats, and it's really calm inside the car. But you're still roofless.

In Europe even the steering wheel will say "Abarth" (and a scorpion logo). Abarth is sister brand of Fiat (or at least they try to position it as such), so it's considered to be NOT a Fiat.

Airbag system different in US from what I understand, and it wasn't worth designing new badge just for US sales. Also Abarth was not fully committed to US market - the Europe version of the Abarth is better optioned and has more power.

You never spoke about the Sport switch by the shifter . It's a nice boost in throttle response and turbo boost. Supposedly alters the suspension and shock rate.

Daniel M Maybe. But the price difference is minimal and depends on where you live. The power difference is mostly negated by the 124's heavier weight and a Miata will beat a 124 at the track every time.

The hardest part about choosing the Fiat or the Mazda is the Looks Vs Power. I understand the mazda is a little bit faster from factory and probably has more HP gains with bolt ons, but that Fiat looks so damn good. I just can't get on board with the Miata appearance. Something about the fender flares, the grill, the head lights just look better on the Fiat in my opinion.

have owned Fiats since 1975 and when properly maintained by someone who knows how to change the ohc belt, and used to aluminum head engines , they have been truly reliable. My 77 Spider has 148 K miles with original engine, tranny etc. Only repairs was an alternator since I drove it one spring day in 18 inches of water, a heater control valve, fuel pump , and radiator recore. It still passes california emissions with flying colors, burns 1 qt oil /3000 miles. Only thing I don't like is the dash has a crack and I had to resew the seats, as the threads broke. I think they used cotton thread. I forgot, I changed a side marker light bulb and a brake light bulb.

An Alfa Romeo designed engine, Italian designed bodywork, a Bilstein suspension, Brembo brakes, interior upgrades and final construction in Turin , Italy which adds the Abarth wheels and the Abarth exhaust with a Miata chassis and other bits. It seems to me the Italians chose a brilliant , balanced platform on which to build the 124. Brilliant. Get the red exterior and the Abarth red alcantara seats, then add a Goodwin racing exhaust system, an intake, DV and a chip and maybe a few chassis braces and the Miata people chattering at you will disappear in the rearview mirror. Ciao .
