Great video. I got the Nikon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 lens as a kit lens with my new D600 many years ago. I sold the D600 and now have the D850. That lens is incredible and I love how light it is. As long as an f/2.8 isn't needed for low light, this lens is great. I mainly use it for landscape when I want light weight.

I can tell you from testing I have done on the D810 comparing the 24-85 to the 24-70 f2.8 non VR lens that the 24-85 is equal in sharpness. No sharper but no softer either. Both lenses AF fine tuned to the body. A good feat for a lens that’s about 1/4 the price. Great too that it’s so much lighter and has VR. I do still favour the micro contrast on the 24-70 though, for that reason the 24-85 doesn’t really get used. But unless you pixel peep it’s not easy to tell the difference between the two lenses. It’s a great lightweight, cheap, VR lens. Possibly a better travel lens than the big heavy non VR 24-70.

Hi LAZY DOG!! I am not a big pixel peeper - I just a great clean over all image. :) This Nikon lens has become my very favorite for landscapes bar none since most of the time I am shooting at an an f5.6 or greater...... unless going for perspective! I have a Tamron 24-70 2.8 that I use at events that works really well with VR. But again, as time has gone by, I love this lens more an more! @@harleyrider9166 The 24-85 is a variable aperture lens so you don’t get the faster speed of the f2.8 lens. The 24-85 does also have less than great distortion and vignetting however these issues are corrected in camera if shooting jpegs or in Lightroom if using Lightroom or Lightroom mobile to edit RAWs. If you buy it I suggest not buy it new because it’s a bit overpriced new. I think it’s about $800 new but about $350 second hand. A good buy second hand I think. If you keep your shutter speeds up at about 3 times the lens focal length you should get camera shake free photos from your f2.8 lens. If not confident take a burst of a few shots and one will be the sharpest. I try to stay at 4 times the focal length. But for a light travel lens, especially for outdoor photos the 24-85 is a viable choice.

@@aussie8114 nit too worried about things that can be corrected in Lightroom or Photoshop with a couple of clicks. Shutter speed at 3 times the focal length is pretty standard photography practice so I agree with you there. I’m confident this lens will perform exactly how I need it to. There’s been way too much research on this lens for it to be a dud. Thanks for the response.

My D750 came with a 24-120 f4 which seems really nice to me but I find it kind of heavy to carry around all day. I bought a 24-85 recently because they are so cheap so I thought no harm to give it a go. I absolutely love the smaller size and it's much lighter. It's so much nicer to carry around all day.

Well I'm looking at this lens right now for my D7500. I like knowing if I ever upgrade to a full frame I'll already have some glass. Definitely recommend looking at the photos on his smug mug. You can tell this is a really sharp lens which is generally what I've heard from other reviews. For me, I primarily shoot portraits and sports. Generally I shoot with my 70-200 in sports but in basketball especially, that 70mm isn't always wide enough, especially on a crop sensor. I hope that if I do end up buying this lens, I'll have the versatility to get those wider shots while still getting those 70-85 range shots. Thanks for the great video.

Hi Kenric!!! This has been, and still is my favorite landscape lens - and yes, I have done portraits with it. And although I have recently switched to the Canon R5 and 90D, this lens and my old D800 are the few Nikon items I will keep. I think I was using it about two months ago in Death Valley. It is an awesome lens. 😁

Have this lens, and it is a ‘sleeper.’ Your D850 has the resolution that allows for massive cropping, but it still requires a decent lens to pull it off. Higher resolution sensors will quickly ‘show up’ a poorer quality lens, and the fact this lens worked for you, proves it’s merit! Oh and get a proper knife to open next time! Hi rotonrat! Well, if you look at dxomark, it does have a really high perceived megapixel rating, but it does need good light. The D850 handles the higher ISO better.... in my opinion, that the D500, but my favorite for high ISO is the D750. These are just MY opinions from my use. The D850 though with this lens will produce the best images out of all of those. I would say that if if were a 2.8 or a 1.8, it would be off the charts...... and crazy expensive!

Had this lens before, but sold it and deeply regretted it. Today I bought one on the used market, for about 100 dollars (Sweden)! To me, the Nikon 24-85mm is better than the Tamron 24-70mm and at least as good as the Sigma 24-105 f.4. Both are significantly more expensive than the Nikon lens.

Hi Asterix X!!! I have used this lens for SO many gigs, and so much landscape. It was one of my favorite portrait lenses.... back when we were shooting before Covid. Got myself a D780 few months ago, but no lens yet for it. I was looking into this lens and others to see what might work for me. Now my old camera was a D5200 (yes, huge step forward) and my favorite lens that I owned then was a Sigma 17-70mm f1.4. Loved that lens and hate that it was not able to be used by my new D780 (at least, that's what the store told me) So anyways, I was looking for a lens that would do something similar or better for either the same range or roughly the same. Or something that could do a bit more range, as my Tamron 70-300mm also was obsolete. I don't have much money, or I would have gotten something already but I really do need to get something because the itch is real and I do need to scratch it. I want to get out again and not be stopped by anything or anyone anymore. Can you help me out with this? (I am from the Netherlands, so not everything might be for sale here)

HI SIG442! Both of those lenses should work fine on your D780. The difference is that the D5200 is a crop sensor and the D780 is full frame. Any F mount lens will fit any F mount body. A crop sensor lens on a full frame body will have a vignette or and the focal length is divided by the crop.... if you are putting a crop sensor lens on a full frame camera - kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWGVpHlvjcmtg6c The only time you might have a problem is with an OLD lens that has the motor focus that uses the little screw that the newer cameras do not have. The lens will still fit and will work in manual focus. Try your lenses on you camera and have fun. 😁

I got this lens with the D600. I sold the camera but kept this lens, and use it with the d810. I also had the 24-70 non vr version, and found no need to keep it as this guy due to its vr and being lighter is of better use for me.

I have this lens and use it as a walk around on my D700. I bought mine used at a photo store for around $200. One problem with this, non-VR, model is that the 67mm Nikon HB28 petal hood is nearly impossible to find. What you can find in abundance is the 67mm Nikon HB39 petal hood for the Nikon 16-85 VRDX. I bought one on Ebay for six bucks. It fit immediately but not lining up correctly with the larger petal centered over the top of the lens, but a little surgery with an Exacto, removing two little plastic tabs solved the problem and now I have a perfectly aligned and locked down hood for this lens. Being that the HB39 is designed to work with 16mm, I knew that my 24mm wouldn't have any problem and such is the case.

Hello, I want to know how this 24-85g vr lens performs on the Nikon D610, because beginners need a lens that is relatively easy to use and the price is not too expensive. I have not used the Nikon D610, but I will say that the 24-85 VR lens is one of my all time favorite lenses. I have used it for portraits, and countless landscapes. Yes, one of my favorites. It should be amazing on the D610. I have used on many other Nikons though. The 24-120 is a great lens with a but more reach. Having said that, the reason some of theses lenses cost so much is the quality of the glass and photos they produce. Pro lenses cost more because they are way sharper. I hope this helps!! 🙏🤗❤

Hi Icarus! Well, if you have the Nikon adapter, it SHOULD since it is a NIkon lens. I do not have a Z6 so I can not say for sure. I have seen mixed reviews about the adapter for the older SLR lenses to the new mirrorless format. 😁
