I visited Dibrugarh, Assam, in 1978. There was a Chinese family running a Chinese restaurant, I think the last one that remained at that time. The food was superb. After learning that I was a Tibetan by ethnicity, they were extremely gracious and introduced all their family members and shared their family circumstances. They told me that, Dibrugarh being the center of tea gardens and tea production, some Chinese moved there in early 1900s to open restaurants that mainly served the British tea garden staff. The family told me that many of their relatives who used to live in Dibrugarh had moved to Canada and USA. They were also planning to move out too. My thoughts and prayers are always with them. I hope they succeed and flourish in their new home.

In Manipur, Northeast India there were a few Chinese families. They were very well assimilated in the local culture. Some members of the family became doctors. One of them became a Harvard faculty member. He speaks the Meitei language very well and became somewhat of a celebrity, with the biggest local news channels covering his story and interviewing him. He also brought Harvard students to Manipur to teach the kids science and maths. Classy dude.

What the Indian man of Chinese descent said at the end is so true. You can go anywhere else but in Asia, you will always be happy. There are so many ethnic Chinese communities that have emerged across Asia dating back many centuries. The Chinese communities of Southeast Asia (Thailand, Philippines, Indonesian, Malaysia, Singapore etc.) are more famous and numerous but there are Chinese communities across South Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan etc.) and their influence is seen in the Chinese restaurants and the popularity of localised versions of Chinese cuisine. On top of that, there are so many new Chinese immigrants and expats living in other parts of Asia and do so because Sinophobia is not a serious issue in Asia like it is in the West. When there is so much linking the Asian nations together, I don't understand why there are countries in the region that are believing the words of outsiders. It is so important that Asians work with other Asians. Asia for Asians.
@perrycheong1058Ай бұрын
Most Asians are even more discriminatory and xenophobic towards different races, including other Asians. This is especially in Japan, Korea, China, and India (they also have a caste system). Malaysian and American racism are cute compared to those countries.

Remember that China violated Panchsheel agreement and blindsided India by attacking india in 1962. So Indian govt interning Chinese Indian was an attempt to leave no stone unturned in a war where india was over-powered by China. Remember that even today Chinese in countries such as America show their allegiance to China. (You can Google Chinese people celebrating CCP founding day in America). And Chinese diaspora living in America and other western countries, frequently disrupts protests against China, while carrying China’s flag. So Indian govt was being overly cautious in 1962. In retrospect, it seems like a heavy handed approach, but one should understand the situation in 1962.
@Maringa60913 күн бұрын
Do you think Indian Americans don't celebrate Independence day in America? CCP is a Communists govt. but they are supported by most of the people and that's probably the reason they won over democrats who later fled to Taiwan although both the groups are influenced by Han Chinese. I am Indian and our Democracy is worse than a military rule because it says freedom but we are not really free. The military rule itself says it is not free and what will we expect but you know the most thing everyone hates is betrayal or lies

I was born and brought up in Shillong but i never knew about the chinese community. Even though I know about that chinese graveyard i live nearby that place, I have so many Tibetan friends but never heard of chinese people living in shillong now. I heard from my dad that they all left, I'm so glad to know about this thanks for sharing❤

As a guy from shillong and who have local chinese friends,most of them have either migrated back to China or have left for the US and Canada.
