I crochet, and this has me utterly mystified. In crochet we increase the number of stitches for a raglan. In knitting it seems y'all just branch off the middle and somehow it works out. 😆 I like the roll the needle technique - I struggle with poking in the right spots with knitting needles, then dropping stitches. I'm dependent upon that hook grabbing my yarn. One day I'll get it, but for now I'm Finally able to make complex things with crochet so I'll continue to learn that and bookmark this video for my retirement crafting. 💕 I made a lovely swatch once with knitting, so I know I can do it - absolutely Love the drape and softness! I just lack the time right now to try in earnest.

oh my goodness THANK YOU! i recently started knitting my first sweater and was following a pattern that uses short rows for neck shaping, however it didn't say to switch the M1s when on the wrong side OR to purl them so the raglan stitches were really raised and obvious, but i used your method and it's coming out PERFECT! ☺️

I finally learned all the math to making a sweater but can you please tell me if you need to knit one round plain in between each raglan increase row because I feel like I've heard this before
@calsanchez6390
@calsanchez6390 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely not! It depends on the pattern you follow -- some ask you to increase every row, some ask you to knit a certain amount of rounds in between increase rows -- but if you're not following a pattern, it's definitely personal preference. :) Happy knitting!
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. It depends on the number of increases you need to make, and the number of rows they need to be worked over. But, many times in a Raglan the increases are worked every other row or round. But not always. It is a case by case situation. 🧶

Hello , I bought a pattern for a sweater and this going to be my first time knit a raglan and I watched your video but instruction in my pattern is a little confused for me ,instead of one marker she wants to put two of them ,each one on the side of knit stitch and then she wrote : knit till you reach the marker,m1,move marker,m1, [ k to the next marker, m1,knit ,move marker,m1] .I suppose to start from the half back and it is like K12,pm,k1,pm,k11,pm,k1,pm,k24,pm,k1,pm,k11,pm,k1,pm,k12. First part to the repeat is ok but starting repeat k to the next marker ,m1 and then I am confused because she doesn’t say move marker after m1 , I just can’t figure it out ,please help me .I was trying to email a designer but she doesn’t respond it.Thank you .
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 2 жыл бұрын
just assume that when a designer says to knit to a marker,, then do something, that they assume you will slip the marker to go to the next step. You are oK.

Great question. What I do, when i have theses questions, is I stop, use some waste yarn and cast on some stitches and try the various techniques to see what they look like. Some produce twisted stitches, some don't. I am adding this question to my video todo list and will make a video comparing these methods. Thanks for asking.

Great video, thank you! I have a pattern that calls for increases "M1A" and "M1T" aka make 1 away or towards. I find them very awkward- can I substitute? I can't figure out the direction of each of the "away" and" towards" to determine in which case I should do a M1R or M1L- Suggestions? Thanks in advance, Jo-Anne

Hi, it could be that my brain is just tired from trying to find a decorative 'raglan' increase, but the swatch at 2.30 and 10.11 are the same or different? because at 2.30 you say it is 'a left lifted increase followed by a right lifted increase', but at 10.11 you say 'it is a right lifted increase, knit one, followed by a left lifted increase'?? 🙀

Knitting with Suzanne Bryan Thank you so much for your quick reply. The instructions for this technique are quite long and consist of two rows to actually complete the sequence. A video has been made by the designer who is ANKESTRiCK and the pattern is JUiST No 2. The video link is kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJrZh6ahbrupi80 . I have visited this designers Ravelry page for her design and found a knitter who posted the problem I have been experiencing to which the designer affirmed her video link made it clear. The instruction for ksr(rs) knit one,slip the stitch back onto the left needle, lift the leg of the stitch below from front to back onto the right needle, then slip the live stitch again purlwise. 1inc'd st. Resolving the inc in the next round:- knit the stitches as normal through the front loop. For ksl (rs): knit slip left: knit one, but don’t slip it off the needle, slip the same stitch purlwise. 1 inc'd st. Resolving the inc in the next round:- knit 1, knit 1 through the back loop. The video shows the technique been knitted continental style and I throw the yarn which Changes the method of manipulating the stitch in my view. This is my first top down sweater and I got gauge first time but am using a DK Superwash merino and laceweight mohair and silk mix which gives me two Yarns to manipulate. Nothing like making things hard for myself...! I really appreciate your help and hope you can understand this reply.

It is very interesting. It is like she is combining a lifted increase with a M1. She uses the leg of the stitch below to create a M1. I knitted a sample. You can slow her video way down and it is easier to see what she is doing. I am still researching this increase.

Knitting with Suzanne Bryan thank you for continuing to follow this up despite what I am sure is a busy schedule. Yes I did slow the video down which did help. I have now started the sweater and have reached the increasing between the armholes. I’m finding the row after the actual increase is producing an uneven look. Sometimes the stitches lay flat (as they have to be knitted in the front of the stitch and the next in the back of the stitch) and other times they don’t despite trying really hard? I’m hoping these will block out. I’m really interested to see how you get on? Many thanks again.

The pattern says "...k1, p1, to ONE stitch BEFORE the marker, M1BR, sm, M1BL..." for raglan shaping on the RS row. You made your increase AT the stitch marker. Is the difference between the two maybe why my count is off? Thank you so much for all you do!!!
