In this short video Vilayanur Ramachandran describes experiments with split brain patients, people who have had their corpus callosum cut. It is very interesting when he describes what happens when the question of belief in God is posed.

It's actually a very EASY question for religious people....... to ignore. Just like always. All they have to say is "I don't understand, but I'm sure god does." And they'll be satisfied with that as a resolution. OR, they'll accuse you of being the devil, who reveals his true identity by trying to cast doubt in a faithful individual. Honestly, if it was so hard for a theist to confront, then why didn't the theist hemisphere in the guy with the condition find a problem with its position?

I just don't know that much about neuroscience, or the methods of the experiment, or even the mechanics behind why the patient's brain was behaving the way it was, so I'm not going to try and use it to explain anything since I don't understand it in the first place. @@BlacksmithTWD humans are not things! Especially not square things - which as a symbol would represent empirism. A circle would represent a worldview and there is no perfect circle outside of our mind (even PI is made up of infinite brackets). A personality is a whole that can't be changed from outside - a personality can't be manipulated, children can be manipulated (that is why emotionally, most people are as mature as children *cough *cough* Narcissism). Now if you look at the planet then you would see that the best understanding that we can come up to are fractals (algorithms) - fractals in fractals in fractals ad infinitum. Trying to fit the circle into squares is just silly but ideologies try to do exactly that (which allows them to look at people as numbers, statistics etc. - see Mao, see Hitler, see Stalin, see Pol Pot, see Imperialism, see Organisations, see Colonialism, see Barbarism). Makes me think of a song that seems to encompass all of today's youth: Little Eskimo Jesus - Keep On Trying Is it possible that you have no personality? If yes, than being honest to yourself would be a start to choose yourself and not illusions; if no, just keep on doing what you are doing since a child and that would be, imitate your parents, teachers and/or gods and repeat repeat repeat.. Socially, children only know domination and subordination and society trains them to only know negotiating (buying things for money). Only personalities are capable of freedom in the sense of thinking for themselves; originally, with a soul, with feeling...

Depends on whether or not the left hand was either forced or wanted to make that action separately from the right. Which is what they are demonstrating in the split mind example. In a mind that it's whole and sound, then the idea is that you as a "complete" person made the decision. Cognitive dissonance is something experienced in a normal brain almost daily, and the idea here is that people who have had their brain split, experience that dissonance separately instead of simultaneously to the point where it can be determined what each hemisphere "believes". At least that is my opinion on it, I havent watched the entire video the clip is from. If I'm wrong someone please correct me!

If half the brain (or half the living person's thoughts and actions) does not believe in God or accept Jesus as the Saviour, there is a conflict of interests as the persons beliefs are divided. That is the problem here. Please explain how this is not a challenge to someone such as yourself who believes in biblical scripture.

@john cameron Ethics constitutes a cultural contract for people to coexist. How one is compelled to act is subjective even if there is a God. When an external actor orders a person to do something, such that the person is forced to act, then the person is absolved from the responsibility of that action. That is not morality, that is following orders. Morality requires internal understanding, the feeling of guilt or shame should something be wrong. If you feel shame at the thought of killing, then you should do it even if God did not order you not to kill. You cannot justify morality with God, because following orders not to kill or being coerced by the threat of eternal hell does not mean you internally think it is actually wrong. By defining wrongness through God, you absolve your responsibility, and necessitate your immorality. You create your own sin.

Because each hemisphere controls one side of the body if you were to close your right eye your right side of the brain will be able to process what is being seen by your left eyeball (the eye that is only opened currently). A normal person’s brain would send the information to left side of the brain from the right side of brain via the Corpus callosum but because a split brain patient has the Corpus callosum separated the 2 hemispheres cannot communicate. Essentially the patient would have one eye covered and that would allow one half of the brain to work while the other has no clue what is going on.

The origins of consciousness in the breakdown of the bicameral mind is book by Julian Jaynes. In essence the question of a two distinct consciousness in each hemisphere leads to the question how and what does the mute right hemisphere communicate with the left. The hypothesis proposes that literacy enforces a cognitive tradeoff that limits the capabilities of the interface between both hemispheres. Similar to cognitive tradeoffs in the development of language between quadrupedal and bipedal primates. An illiterate brain would represent concepts and words in images rather than images of alphabetical and grammatical syntax. Such a person may be able to access a visually intuitive perception that is difficult for a literate person may achieve. This may apply to multiple stages of the brainwave cycle. Cultures that used entheogens could have honed these capabilities even further. With this in mind the question is how would this have influenced the stories that were told around the fireplace. It could explain the origin of early proto religious philosophy. In essence the mute right hemisphere is the voice of the God/spirit/devil co-processor an extended visual intuition. Perhaps there is a layer of reality that is not readily accessible for modern domesticated and literate homosapiens due to suppressed bicameral facilities. This particular video is fascinating in particular because the right hemisphere believes ( albeit humerously ) itself to be feminine even though the split brain patient is a man. Allowing some creative license in further interpretation maybe the right hemisphere and the left hand side is indeed the feminine side of the body. The right hand is usually the dominant hand. The liver is on the right. The heart straddles the middle but lies mostly on the left. The stomach is squarely on the left. This is particularly interesting not merely because of the symbolism of nurture. But because lying on your right leads to reflux as digestive juices roll down the oesophagus from the elevated stomach. The observant will notice lying on your left is generally more comfortable. So mankind has evolved such that spooning works best if the man lies on the right and the woman on the left.

While on the opposite side (right side up), my imagination flourishes, allowing me to start and maintain a dream more easily as I drift off...

I don't see how this question is difficult to answer. The Bible states that humans intuitively know there is a God but we chose to reject him and our thinking became futile (Romans 1:18-32) So the christian can easily argue that the right hemisphere intuitively knows God is real but deceive ourselves with our foolish thinking using the left hemisphere I suppose.

And regardless of the decided beliefs of the brain - Christian theology holds to mind-body dualism. The brain within the body might be separated into two halves, but presumably there is still one spirit interacting with both. We know that God sees the heart - and who knows what the heart of a man with two independent halves of a brain might be. Whatever the contrast between them - I think I can trust that God would judge someone like that rightly. Interesting idea though. I'd be much more interested in tests that might determine just how different each half is. Do they have separate identities? Even then - that's not so different from people with split-personality disorder. Only now the source of the disorder becomes physical rather than mental.

Rather, they can believe in and use science in day to day life yet still reconcile the theory of an after life and or the possibility of their being a higher plane of existence/influence beyond the one we directly see as the here and now with our senses. Unlike atheists, they seem to have a far easier time reconciling things that science can't explain. Something that could be indirectly explained by science as having a sort of extra cognitive/sensory perception range that atheists don't have. Similar to being born with normal trichromatic vision Vs bi or monochromatic color blindness, where the color blind person literally can not see a spectrum of light (and thus reality) others can. Religious people likely see a "spectrum of the light of reality" the atheist can't.

There are profound challenges that the Religious Right has with reason and logic, though they seem completely unaware of any need for reason and logic. That might be somewhat fine if their Religiosity stayed at Church and in their homes. The truly tragic part is that their Religious Zeal is now carrying over into the political arena and the future of the United States of America.

Put super simply - left hemisphere controls the right side of your body and the right hemisphere controls the left side. So when the left hand points, it is the right hemisphere doing the pointing. ***** "You will see or hear the question with both ears and both eyes anyways, so can you truly rule out that the one side is not influencing the other in anyway?" For people with a functioning intact corpus callosum you are correct. With "split-brain" patients though, each side learns on it's own without the knowledge of what the other side is learning. So "Does the right and left side also have a separate sub conscious?", Excellent question. Some say "Yes." And that is the point of the video. Which sub conscious does a religious person think is the correct one? Or does a second Soul inhabit the person when this happens to someone. "Most people are right-hand dominant which is actually controlled by the left side of the brain." - Yes, this statement is accurate. "So is the study really accurate going just by hand pointing?" - Absolutely. The reason is because we are talking about patients with a corpus callosum that is not intact. In fact, the results of these studies led to Roger Sperry being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1981. This is how much these studies had an impact in this field. It is truly amazing work. Some other key phrases to look up that you might interesting: "lateralization" - This is the term used when describing which side of the brain is better at certain functions "Diagonistic dyspraxia" - This is a version of Alien Hand Syndrome where one hand tries to interfere with what the other hand is trying to do. Example: One hand might be trying to take a drink of water and the other hand will try to swat the drink away. This field of study is still in its infancy. Not all the answers are in, and some current theories are sure to change and be proven wrong. But it sure raises a lot of questions.

Davesreality...finish that quote.."judge not...." It continues, " For as you judge ye shall be judged" Now if I judge by the Bible, I am going to be judged by it in the end anyway...so? Now, a caveat: the ungodly do not want any laws ( especially moral ones) so in the end, they are judged without law. Think of it! How would you like to be brought into a courtroom...LAWLESS, and told by the judge, " there is no law I have to obey in judging you; you lived absent of Law, there is no Las now to protect you!

David A: I also have issues with various translations, and my own preferences. But unless it is a rogue edition that completely changes the meaning, most translations simply try to make archaic language more understandable. Instead of focusing exclusively on the grammar, focus on the meaning of the passage; the idea it is presenting. And before some critic goes off on a particular verse; here's my take on why studying it is worthwhile. It presents many examples of human behavior, both good and bad, and it explains that there are consequences for each - rewards and penalties - both in the temporal and the eternal. Those models are for our own good, both as individuals and as a society. The Bible emphasizes self-control based on a fear of God and those eternal consequences. If we cannot control ourselves (internally) we will be controlled by others (externally). This was why the biblical model was so important to the early Christians andat least some of this nation's founders. It could be said that the Bible and the Judeo-Christian heritage is why the American model stood out in the world (until fairly recently , as we have abandoned it). That heritage is behind our concepts of representative government, compassion, civility, respect for life, stewardshiip of the Earth, leniency for those we defeated in battle, and other things once considered 'noble'. I known, you don't see those things so much, do you? That's the difference between actually following the Biblical precepts and just going to church (or not). There are plenty of examples of NOT following them, because the further we go away from God, the worse things get. God's plan works for the benefit of all; Man's plans go in the opposite direction. Which would you prefer? Each must decide for themselves, but when most choose to go God's way, things get better.

Pablo, The problem with all religious people is that they have only a single source of information and all they ever do is quote from it. And that source is just a bunch of people's notebooks that have been transcribed and edited over thousands of years. Add to that your "book" was chosen arbitrarily for you based on where you were born. And all those books do not agree on much. On the other hand we have science which is practiced world wide and has millions of documents that all agree with each other. As for Jesus. Where is he? He died for three days and has been incognito for 2 thousand years. Is your religion the only thing that stops you from committing crime or adultery or worse? I hope not.

Curious presentation. Apart from his very human error of getting left and right mixed up at the critical point, he also conspicuously forgot to "ask" the left brain whether it knew if it was on the moon or California. So he has demonstrated nothing. So at best all we have is a question answered NOT by "a person", but conveniently only by 2 conflicted, disconnected halves of his brain. Long and short, I think, "belief" is possibly an activity only possible when the brain halves are connected. Art mixed with & connected to logic. That is whether you believe in a God or not. (because neither stance are based on evidence - both are beliefs). The people he describes with the severing of the halves, quite possible cannot "believe" anything. They are fact based only. Evidence or conflict. That is all they can do. Schizophrenics possibly are on the far side of the continuum - they possible believe MORE than one thing. They believe they are something AND something else at the same time.
