This is something I have observed over the years, channels that focus on developing skills, finding experiences, talking with experts, or otherwise consistently learning new things regularly work best when you have at least two distinct personalities who can approach the process from different angles. Examples have been: Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage of Mythbusters; Kari Byron, Grant Imahara, and Tory Belleci, also of Mythbusters/Project White Rabbit; Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May of Top Gear/Grand Tour; Richard Hammond and Tory Belleci of The Great Escapists; Mark and Ethan of Unus Annus; and of course Brian and Jason of Modern Rogue. My point being that you really need a consistent person to bounce your personality off of and who can also be as interest in learning these talents as you. An idea that just crossed my mind is that with Roosterteeth/Achievement Hunter officially disbanding there may be some recruitable talent from there, and many of them are already located in the Austin, Texas area.

Although a time machine isn't possible (yet), the sentiment behind wanting to go back rings true. I've subscribed to MR for many years, and the videos in a small barn, with a cool new guide or demonstration each week, felt very authentic. I feel that some of the soul of MR was lost over the past few years in the attempt to increase production value and scale. When in reality, all we needed was a couple of guys behind a tripod in a barn, discussing how to make mead. To me, the biggest selling point of MR was its brand. It felt like a club for like-minded individuals interested in the vision of being a “modern rogue” a distinguished gentleman, a cultured adventurer, a MacGyver, and an all-around worldly guy who knows things and how to do even more (without being a chooch). I am hopeful based on what you’ve said in this video. I feel you’re in a good position to reset and get MR back to its roots by doubling down on the brand of being a modern rogue. Although we may no longer have the chemistry between you and Jason, I fully believe you make this work by featuring great guests and engaging with the community (like this video). Don’t worry so much about perfection, have fun with it, that’s what we’re all here for. Best of luck for the future!

Honestly there are two big sides of content I would like to see make a return. The first is the "sit down with an expert and learn about a topic" episodes like whisk(e)y, cigars, and the hacking stuff. For me this doesn't work with a "one host one expert" balance, you kinda need another 'inexperienced' person to bounce off of. The other side (that I think a lot of us miss lately) are the "we don't know what we're doing but we vaguely know what we want to make" stuff like the potato cannon, makeshift shelter, or (a personal favourite) the gas masks. THIS is what always felt like "modern rogue content" to me. I have loved this channel since its inception (hell, since before it WAS its own channel, found it through the first couple of episodes on the Scam School channel) and want to see it at its best. Past few months have been a bit off but I can tell things are going to get better. Last change this big was the whole compound move stuff, and I remember things being *slightly* rocky around then too.

@mrentity22106 ай бұрын
Reading some of the comments, I kinda agree with a lot of them. The show feels a bit more sterile lately. The appeal of early Rogue was two guys with amazing chemistry and reasonable comedy skills trying to do stuff they clearly had no business doing, sometimes with a teacher. I think when you just started reading out articles was pretty much the start of the decline, but the chemistry still held it together. You seem to have fallen into a trap that a lot of KZbinrs do, which is a loss of genuine feel in return for greater production. And probably, honestly, a lot of that is going to be the outsourcing of material and scripts to new people, but there's also the definite degradation of the feel of authenticity, replaced by the feel of corporate dollar signs, that predicts my fall-off in viewership for so many KZbin channels. And I'm not saying your videos have to look like shit, or be shot on a shoestring budget in your off time, but you are approaching, or have possibly already entered, the zone of "Well this should just be a TV show" without actually being a TV show. Some channels manage this by basically becoming generic play-to-the-masses dumbed-down ersatz TV shows, but the way this show is made would require a drastic shift to do that. You're in the uncanny valley of content. You aren't one thing, and you're not the other. If you're honestly trying to maintain the soul of your show, find a specific regular replacement for Jason, find a dedicated and specific writer so you maintain a voice, pare back the production a bit, and return to the crazy makeshift ideas that endeared you to everyone. Two idiots attempting to do something they shouldn't, or being taught something by an expert is far more interesting than a bunch of people who know what they're talking about having a discussion, or you just reading an article written by a dedicated researcher. I genuinely think you're either underplaying or not realizing how big of a loss Jason was. And while I wish him all the best, I find it kinda half-assed of you to finally promote his channel at a point where he hasn't posted anything in almost half a year. Presumably because he went from a channel he helped build from nothing to a major success to a channel starting at nothing that didn't seem to gain any traction, and lost his ability to dedicate time to it. The post where he described himself as "looking for jobs" is sad. I'm not sure why he left, but it genuinely seems like it wasn't a great idea for anyone involved.

It’s a bloody shame that this all happened and I think the worst part is not being entirely open. It’s clear that something has been obfuscated, maybe because of peoples pride, but I think your viewers are intelligent enough to hear the truth (if that’s even clear to you at this point). There is various stories about financial issues, people not getting paid and it must’ve been really hard both on your stuff and your family. I think just a very crystal clear owning up to the audience would’ve gone a long way, instead of hinting at things dancing round subjects. It’s been Clear Brian for awhile that you have got something on your mind ,wearing heavily on you,as it’s leaking out around the edges. I’ve enjoyed your content for a long time and the dynamic between you and Jason was fantastic.It’s a shame that things came to an end but ultimately everything comes to an end. I think that it's worth considering that the revenue the channel makes is directly tied to how well the videos do; within the last year they've been averaging 20-60k views per video, but this is a 1M+ sub channel with millions more views. It stands to reason that jason was being paid a fraction of what he'd make at the channel's peak, and also that him saying so could be misconstrued as "yeah they were stealing my pay" rather than "we can't make ends meet because the channel got shafted, right after we bought a whole compound no less." I mean, even before that, they've been operating at a loss for how long now??

I’m glad this video finally got made, but at the same time it really felt like a lot of words were spoken, but not a lot was said. There was a lot of dancing around topics and blah-blahing issues. There was no talk of the financial issues he talked about on Great Night, nor anything around the reason why recent videos have been what they are (ie article reads and New York etiquette). It was just a lot of “we have plans”. I guess to try and help the channel, I’d recommend going back to what worked in older videos, such as discussing ciphers, cryptography, spycraft, improvised builds like the Pepper Hooray or Beelzeblaze, etc., not just reading articles or explaining the intricacies of NY bodegas. Go back to two middle aged guys just f-ing around and seeing what happened.

Sad to say I didnt get to show him that I could do it too. But Thank you Brian for helping nurture the interest. ❤

When i started watching Scam School, as it slowly grew up and out into Scam Nation, I jumped to MR because it felt like something big was coming. Something heartfelt. With Brian and jason, MR felt like what Mythbusters could have been if it was not run by a corp. And early shows showed that. Delving into History and finding badasses. Playing with chemicals and teaching what NOT to do. Learning Self Defense and Secret Codes. And most of all, having fun doing it. I NEVER would have clicked in if it felt like a syndicated TV show. I have no trust for those because they always end up changing something that brings it down, extending its life at the cost of its dignity. I LEANRED things watching this show. I felt like I was capable of being a rogue, in some small way. Now? The last video I can remember watching was Level 2: Advanced Tea Craft For Gentlemen. That was 2 years ago. I've stepped in and watched since then, but I cant REMEMBER any of them. None of them stuck with me at all. I wish Jason the best. I'm a rogue at heart. But idk what COULD be done that would bring back the magic that was old Modern Rogue. Also I just noticed the icon for the channel and I'm crying.

I personally want the public access verson of this show and not the cable version. By that I mean, I want you and Jason figuring out stuff alone. No pro help, no researchers etc. Best videos were before you brought on the folks to your staff who knew how to build and craft. The fun part was watching you two figure it out like the rest of us would. Yes it looked clunky and yes you failed or something broke but that was the fun of it. A magician and an author trying to build a flashbang, that just sounds epic and it was. Now its just a tv show, youtube was not built for tv shows it was built for moms basement content.

It didn't seem like it was directly addressed in the video, and I just want to be clear on it; Did MR and Jason part on good terms? Brian did say they were pitching something together so that's a good sign, but I hope for a little more clarity on this. Thank you for making the video.

If they are pitching ideas still then I assume they still have a good working relationship. I know that people tend to think co stars are best buddies forever but remember myth busters host hated each other. Doubt that these guys hate each other.

@@Mr_Zx Adam Savage always says they "weren't friends," which I think you can kinda see in some episodes, They certainly weren't making off the cuff jokes with each other for an hour, but they respected each other's work ethics enough to keep the show going for as long as the did, so I think "Hate" might be a strong word. But yeah, Jason and Brian seemed genuine together. which is were people get the "heart oof the show" thinking from. Jason was looking to push his creative juices in other directions. He'd been doing more writing, more Novels, more fascinating weird and gross stuff which is easily more his personal wheelhouse. Makes sense he'd want to step away to pursue more of it.

What I would love to see more of is you being more of a co-host, for example your videos with Red Team Alliance. The videos when you bring in expert and we see your journey to understanding that topic. To me those were always the best episodes, seeing your epiphanies was at times hilarious and others it was even like a "hell yes" moment where the main character overcomes a great obstacle in a TV show. That and it's always fun to learn something new or find a new perspective on a given topic.

What do people want more of - I personally like when you guys try stuff - ik, super specific. But nerdy or hands on stuff is super cool. 3D printing, lock picking, soldering, games, painting anything. Wherever you think you could learn/teach but also make it look fun. I was super bummed to hear the dynamic was changing, but am hopeful. Cant wait to see more.
@mrboberson74246 ай бұрын
@ModernRogue When you post a video you have the option not to send that to the subscriber feed. Might be worth looking into for shorts since the algo views the subs who don't click it in their feed as a demark. Subs who regularly watch in the shorts feed will see it anyways so no worries about that. I've really enjoyed the new stuff lately and I'm glad to hear that Jason and Brian aren't trying to(intentionally) maim each other or anything.
@Glorfindel_1176 ай бұрын
I'd love to see more of the day-trip type videos. Like going to learn longsword, or dagger, or going and learning horseback riding, or painting, or some sort of skill like that. Where you (and classically, Jason) go out to a trained person, who gives you a little bit of training in an interesting topic. I know thats probably higher cost than the greenscreen history stuff, but that's what drew me to the channel originally.
@JD2jr.6 ай бұрын
Thanks. Better late than never, I suppose. It does seem odd that you say you don't want to "engage in drama", but you seem to imply everything happened amicably so the only "drama" is the lack of transparency. Whether it's "we can't afford a host" or "we have disagreements too often" or "Jason doesn't actually enjoy filming anymore", it would all be fine, but *none* of that was said. Not even a "Jason is definitely gone and we're looking to replace him" or a "Life is getting between Jason and Modern Rogue, he'll be back if the stars align" would be nice. Either could help the audience give better feedback instead of just feeling hung out to dry. His absence also is probably more noticeable because of the general content shift. We're here rooting for you and if you can recapture that "adult kids hanging out in the garage" feel, it would be easier to accept. As of now, it feels like Jason was the fun one, and you just provided the channel. But I've seen your other projects; you know how to create fun too, it's just not coming across in these "read articles to the audience" videos. Perhaps you just need someone else to egg you on while talking to the "experts". Your new cohosts are working double time being both the second host and the expert. Perhaps you could get Cory back for a bit, or throw the camera on a tripod and put Brandt in front of the camera, or see if JRY would come sub in for a few episodes to get the mojo back. Heck, pull a scam school and use the channel as a business writeoff to try new things with one or more of your kids.

Hey Brian, I've been a fan of both this channel and Scam School/Scam Nation from day one, and I know i can only speak personally and i know my chagrin and feeling of letdown with both channels does have a lot to do with the nostalgia factor of learning things about a whole new facet of human experience I hadn't come across before. I suppose the things I wish to see is more of the exploratory side of MR where you're rather flying by the seat of your pants with the co-host in something new, as opposed to a sit-down lecture style where someone is just teaching you about a topic (although I'm not opposed to that as a sort of follow-up video where the pro of the topic can give you a lessons learned type of video). And i know this isn't necessarily the forum for it, but for Scam Nation, I would love to see some of the classic form of content with average joes at the bar being dazzled by the magic and them having to perform it. I am and will always be a fan of all your content!

Thank you for finally putting on video what the few redditer's and niche followers only had vague ideas about. While I understand your desire to "not drive angry" and "find the best solution", please understand that in the absence of facts, speculation holds sway. In many of the jobs I've had, I've found that you tell good news as quickly as you can, and you tell bad news/change even faster. The longer you take to rebrake the bone, the more it will hurt when it finally sets. Even if you haven't formed the complete solution yet, just knowing that you are on it, and that Jason isn't some burnt husk in the bottom of the nudist cement pit you have in the back yard is enough to keep most of us at bay. While it was with good intentions, the silence hurt us, and in some cases tested our loyalty and found it wanting. ALSO: YES more So-Han! He recently was given by the town/state/whatever a new building that they own now. Myself and a friend watched your channel during the gentleman/warrior/scoundrel days and he picked up cigars and whiskey, while I took to the tea culture. That rabbit hole took some adjusting :) Thank you again.

I have to be honest and say that very little of the recent content has peaked my curiosity. The amazing chemistry you and Jason had on the show is part of it, but if you can find a good dynamic with another host, and go on making the adventurous, experimental videos with copious amounts of "What happens if you do this instead?" and "I'm sure it'll be fine...probably" situations, the channel will thrive. 🙂

I think the meat that's missing isn't just the concepts that were being visited in what it seems we agree are the golden years of the channel. The reason I watched much more in what I believe was late highschool early college for me was the feeeel of the show. Watching the show made me feel like a badass. I was attracted to the organized chaos. It felt very similar to Scam School and I believe there was another channel back in the day where things were on fire and weapons were happening but I was learning something (hacking too). Those are the feelings I'd like to recapture.

I think what we want from MR is Jason back. He was the heart of the channel. I dont want to talk for everyone, but every friday, I knew I'd get a good laugh because of Jason. If we can't get Jason back, go back to your roots, bring evan and Kaitlin on to do a random build. Bring jack the whipper and do something stupid. Bring james back and show more pick pocketing. Stop trying to reinvent the wheel. Do what made you popular. Oh, and fix the relationship with Jason, please!!!!

Been watching and following since the JustinTV days. Obviously the chemistry with Jason will be missed, but outside of that, I really enjoyed the episodes where you explored and learned something useful and new. I found those to be really interesting and they ultimately pushed me to go try new things. My least favorite episodes where the ones where it felt like they were a 5 minute crafting episode. I also liked the Scam School format because I like magic and also videos on techniques to navigate social situations. I'm a huge fan of "World's Greatest Con" and I would love to see kind of a cross-over format where you explore some topics in the Modern Rogue style, but with a bit more of a documentary coverage layered on top. I appreciate all the hard work you've put into the channel, and I can only imagine how stressful it must be with the capricious whims of the algorithm as your funding mechanism.

I feel like it's not even that Jason left, of course, we'd love to see both of you co-host again, but there's been episodes before where one of you couldn't make it or participate before this- A lot of the drink episodes with Trevor fall into that category. But the thing is that, and due to the machine overlords(algorithm) this is the first longer video I've seen in a while, a lot of the videos post-Jason leaving to do his own thing were just sort of lists and articles, in other words the sit-down and interview style episodes, which are fine on their own in moderation, but when it FELT like they're the ONLY thing we got for a while, aside from the shorts, it kind of took away from that heart principle of Modern Rogue. Which you nailed at describing by the way, 100% the pitch was the whole rogue, scoundrel, James Bond, all that- But the "Lessons you wish your dad would've taught you" has ALWAYS been the heart of the show, and the closer the episodes stick to that idea, the better they tend to be- For example, I would LOVE a "Rogue's introduction to cars and working on cars" that is 100% a STAPLE episode that needs to go in the Modern Rogue catalogue ASAP, also things like "How to wrestle" (High school, Olympic style, shoot wrestling, etc.), AND "How to be a PRO wrestler" (like Hulk Hogan, without the steroids and questionable life choices). We KIND of got some of those ideas with the medieval war wrestling video, but there's loads of diversity on the topic, and you could even go through all those, and then sort of have like a video on how wrestling has evolved across cultures and through the ages into so many different branches. The heart of Modern Rogue, to me, is, and has always been about learning to be a better, more interesting, and more creative person in general- I think the issue is that we've been feeling kind of starved for the "Actually Doing Things" episodes", which looks like are finally making a comeback. Because it's nice to learn new things, but it's even better to learn how to DO new things. (or in the cases of more dangerous episodes, safely, and in a controlled environment learning how things work for hypothetical scenarios and educational purposes) Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to learn more (hopefully) from the new videos I missed.

I hope going forward, when long form videos come back, we see more of the hand-made hijinks, and less than safe experiments. It felt like two dudes messing around with things that they shouldn't and trying to make something work. That was fun, that was what I came for. Suger and Saltpeter, a body in lye, homemade gas masks, improvised body armor. Those were the best episodes because it was two guys, clearly out if their depth, but learning by failing and kinda succeeding The most boring episodes were the ones where someone is just spewing facts you coulf find online. And I don't mean the ones where an actual expert comes (Whiskey, cigars, pipe smoking), because those come from people with actual practical experience in their craft. The boring episodes are the ones where they just sit around on set and start explaining things they found online

I will say on the flip side of that that to evoke those feelings outta at least me personally you gotta have good rapport, which is why I think i've had a knee jerk reaction to ignore your output post Jason. For Instance: There was a show I used to watch on Fox 29 in philly on sunday afternoons called Masterminds and it did capers for episodes. One I found interesting is the people that figured a way to beat slot machines by inserting a computer chip over the existing one so the machine would pay out in a couple uses. that way security wouldn't tie in the guys standing near the machine with the person that hit jackpot like 5 minutes later.

It's funny that people calling thems3elves fans didn't know Jason went off to chase other projects. He's got a mailing list and everything people! The weird thing about shorts is the more you have of them the less I notice when you actually do release a long video. Like I'm usually looking at my subscription feed, but the way they organize stuff, anything that's a short or a live stream seems to get pushed first and knocks down all the stuff I'm actually looking for, so if you guys make like one long video a month I might totally miss it if I don't back track like 10 videos to make sure.
