My father worked in an underground coal mine in Australia for a while in the mid-80s. Aluminium (Aluminum) foil in any form was banned underground for this reason. Due to the salt in coal seams, rust is a big issue for steel and iron parts and infrastructure. There is also a lot of heavy, high-impact machinery used underground. The concern was that a discarded piece of foil from a lunch wrap, or candy wrapper could end up near some rust, and something heavy might impact it, causing a small but intense fire...in a coal mine.
@nssheepster Жыл бұрын
That's exactly the kind of thing where your average worker will complain about 'overzealous safety procedures'... But it's 100% the right call to make. People complain about 'silly' things like that, and how unlikely it is to ever matter.... But even once is enough to make clear how important these things are to follow. Even aside from the massive harm it would cause, and the lives endangered... Simple practicality suggests that setting your coal mine on fire is a good way to make sure you have no more coal to mine.
@cphVlwYa Жыл бұрын
Unless they also banned zinc and galvanized metals, that rule is just ignorant fear. Zinc will react with iron oxide in almost the same way as aluminum, it's just less known. In either case tho, zinc or aluminum won't ever react under normal conditions. Thermite is only possible due to the large surface areas and fine mixing of the power. Standard rust on it's own doesn't even make good thermite, you need very fine iron oxide and very fine aluminum. And not to mention, even in powdered form they're extremely hard to ignite. Something like aluminum foil sitting in a pile of rust poses less of a fire hazard than a flashlight.
@johnbeauvais3159 Жыл бұрын
Hold on, there might be another reason for the no aluminum rule. In reading about blasting I’ve found than normal blasting caps were aluminum but mining blasting caps were made of copper and the reason stated was hazardous gasses produced after the explosion that could linger in the mine.

@@biosaber585 Except it can be stopped by sucking up the heat, which is why water works. But you need to provide the water fast enough so that it absorbs the heat faster than the fuel generates it, which certainly wasn't happening with that leaky tap.
@biosaber585 Жыл бұрын
@@reverse_engineered nope not with thermite. Its self oxidizing nature and extreme heat means there's no real method to stop it. Thermite burns around 2200 C or 4000 F as for a reason not to use water it generate hydrogen gas due to the iron being generated from the reaction interacting with the water which can cause an explosion. Official cited methods to extinguish really don't exist, basically the answer is let it burn itself out and prevent extra fuel entering the mix and/or getting access to highly expensive and difficult to source chemicals and/or materials to smother the mixture. Id like to remind you, thermite is used for underwater welding, water does frankly nothing to stop thermite its just too hot. This isn't something that's even on par with like a full blown house fire or chemical fire, thermite is akin to welding reactions and water flash boils at those heats. Even things like liquid nitrogen do too. Liquid oxygen I've seen considered but its VERY expensive and hard to transport and not a great answer
