As a teacher and former Army Soldier, I know the feeling. Being a teacher was harder and more stressful than being a Soldier but Soldiers get respect and appreciation; teachers get none of that and when you put your whole heart into it, you may even get villainized.

Injuries from teaching: sprained wrist, sprained ankle, probably twice, but one I saw treatment for, then it gave way and I broke my ankle 3 weeks later at a friend's. Kicked so hard during a needed diaper change of a 3 year old I got whiplash so severe the dr thought it might have been a broken neck. A toe stomped on and moved out of joint, a torn meniscus, hair pulled so hard I had goose eggs on my scalp and torn cartilage and ligament in my hand and wrist that required surgery. That doesn't count multiple bruises and headaches, backaches and anxiety. Or the time a racially motivated bomb threat was called into the elementary school that's shared the same campus and they decided to have preschool shelter in place instead of evacuate, and parents kept coming in the back way to drop off kids despite the cops saying no, firetrucks, and helicopters and teachers saying go home! Take your kid and go!

@@amberadams217 Fortunately I'm a big guy, and although these threats are always real (I live in LA county), I never had to engage an out of control student. However, I did witness our skinny female counselor a few years ago trying to pacify a situation. She was nearly hurled over a student's back. That was the moment I almost lost it and was about to attack the kid. Glad I held my anger; it was gonna get ugly and I didn't care. I resigned from that school that year. In 2015 I became a substitute teacher. I returned to college to add teaching certification so I could teach. I went through the internship during covid. After covid I realized that teachers were now doing two jobs, not one. Covid brought about the need for online access to courses because children were being quarantined so frequently. After Covid, the teachers are still doing two jobs...online teaching and classroom teaching. The administration thought "oh great we can kill two birds with one stone. "Teachers can do two jobs with one salary and teaching did not return to normal. There should be classroom teachers and online teachers and teachers should not be required to do both jobs. At this point the administration can use online teaching platform during weather days so that the school year can be kept in tact. I say that any teacher who is working both jobs should have two salaries. Teachers are not being compensated for this extra load and salaries have not kept up with the added workload.

I agree with everything except for the part of NOT getting up and just quit. Sometimes the best course of action is the one less restrictive and resistant... i.e. drop everything and quit on the spot. If teachers, paras, subs, etc want to see drastic change the fastest... they need to all stop what they are doing and quit. They need to go into something else. The more drastic the numbers of educators quitting the more likely the system will change. Nothing will change if people continue to do the same thing expecting different results. Once people realize that the only way they will ever get notice or respected in this broken system is by removing yourself from it and let it d!e. By continuing to participate you are essentially saying, "this is okay. I am ok with the abuse, I am ok being sick all of the time from the dust, mites, mold, rat feces, roaches, etc. I am ok with the gaslighting, passive-aggressive , etc." You are essentially giving permission by staying. The best thing to do is quit and let the system collapse within itself by its own sheer audacity, hubris, egoism, and other bs nonsense. Can you save and change a sociopath-psychopath? No! You let the sociopath-psychopath starve to d3ath by not feeding what it needs to survive. Cut off the supple and eventually it will be replaced, hopefully by something better. However, we won't know until everyone collectively gather up their things and move away, cutting off the human resource needed to keep the abuse system going.

I understand what you're saying. However, I don't have veteran status, and I quit. I taught for 24 years (in Florida), and I just couldn't take it anymore. I began to research alternatives and found through Indeed, that there are lots of remote jobs out there, signed up for online TEFL classes, and turned in my resignation letter. My last physical day teaching was March 11, 2022 and my last day of employment was March 28th (yeah, I was that teacher with lots of sick days on the books). In my research, I found that I could live in Latin America on 1/4th of my US budget. Sold my house, sold my car and was in Guatemala on the 30th of May. Fear of the unknown is a legitimate issue, but the idea of being utterly disrespected (by the district/legislation) and moving through the next 6 years teaching was even more frightening. I felt "dead" inside, and realized that I'd developed a shell around myself to protect my spiritual, emotional and mental well being. Teachers teach because they care about kids, and working in an environment of lunacy that couldn't care less about the kids is literally painful.

Today is my last day. I came back to education after a few years. Took over a class so I was aware of the challenges as that’s what happened my first year of teaching. It’s not easy taking over especially when the class has zero structure. I was able to keep them on task when I had enough work BUT unfortunately, the school didn’t provide a curriculum, textbooks, workbooks nor online resources for the students. I was stuck trying to figure out how to teach several classes for 1 1/2 hours everyday. I had to scour the internet, grab any resources I could find and ended up buying quite a bit from TPT. Today, I realized it’s not worth it. The behaviors are out of control, the principal gaslight me to come there and I’m spending so much out of my pocket because the school provides no resources to teach the kids. Why should I go through all of that?

I’m completing my 27th year teaching, and plan to retire. I can honestly say that it has been a long and arduous career. The extra stress dealing with various principals who you felt were out to get you. Notwithstanding students who thought it was their job to disrupt the class on a daily basis. Now, I have another problem, this is my second year making the highest salary in my district. Almost making $140,000 isn’t anything to laugh at. I always dream of finally being able to retire, but now I’m beginning to second guess myself. How can I stay strong, and say what you advised: “You have done enough.?” I’ve been that if you start chasing the money, you’ll never retire.
I'm a teacher and I hate to say it, but our profession doesn't really deserve much better. The far majority of teachers won't stand up for themselves and confront administrators and politicians. They sit on their backside and allow parents and administrators to attack them. Another issue we face is that American students perform poorly against those in Asia and Europe, especially in math and science. This is not the fault of teachers, but teachers and administrators aren't willing to speak truthfully as to why that's the case. We all it's because our society doesn't give a shit about educating our kids. The kids don't give a shit and most parents are disengaged and too self-absorbed to support their child's education, another chunk cares more about sports. I teach a significant number of Asian American students and they just crush my white and black students because their parents care more, they are involved, and they have high expectations. We can't produce sub-par results and then complain about things; people won't listen unless you can make a persuasive argument as to why those poor results aren't your fault. Teachers have to stand up and boldly speak about the reasons our schools basically suck. Teachers are not the reason, but our schools do suck as far as producing results and teachers sit and say nothing publicly. Some don't even understand that our schools are terrible, which is sad, and others just don't have the courage to speak. If you argue that American public education is producing students that can compete for the jobs of the future, you can't be taken seriously. Those jobs are math, science, and tech. based and we do a horrible job in these areas. Sir, a huge part of your problem stress is most likely teaching in a huge city. It is easy to see that our huge cities are in chaos with homeless people trashing the streets, violence out the wazoo, drugs, etc. I don't see how kids raised in Chicago, New York, San Francisco, etc. can learn anything with the crap they see and deal with every day.
@AchillesRuptureRecoveryJourney2 жыл бұрын
Wow, so much to unpack here. I would say that I agree with you about parents being self absorbed and caring more about sports. I would also add that I spoke up to administration about things and felt bad afterwards because you can definitely tell that you’re supposed to shut up and color and that the other teachers that agreed with you behind doors would not back you when it mattered.

@Laura G I don't disagree that there are rooms full of AP kids that care and work hard. The problem is that it represents only about 20% at most of our nation. It's the 80 to 85% that are destroying us. I saw a statistic that China is pumping out 10 scientist and engineers for every 1 that we are. We can't compete in a global economy when so few of us can do the math and science.

For anyone that has left mid year during this current teacher shortage, is it true that districts can take away your teaching license since quitting mid-year is technically a breach of contract?

I'm trapped in teaching because I have a 21 year-long undiagnosed illness (By every hospital in NYC, Cleveland Clinic, Harvard, Yale, and NIH). I cannot go one day without health insurance. I'm physically disabled (wheelchair user) and I have a speech disability due to my illness. I've wanted out for decades, but my illness has imprisoned me in teaching. I have tried everything to get out (networking, job fairs, interviews, resumes, life coach, applying to go back to school, applying for disability) with no success. I implore you and anyone that can to please help me. I know the job is making my illness worse. PLEASE HELP ME!

I agree with what you're saying but I do think you need a financial plan to quit. I've known people who quit jobs they've hated without a plan and it didn't go well for them. It's especially important if you're a self supporting individual or if you're a single parent.

I am trying hard to figure out what else I can do for a living with a degree in Speech Language Pathology. I am applying to the university my son attends to see if I can be student advisor, This way I may be able to get a discount on his eduction and the something new, I am afraid I will not succeed at it or they will not even offer me the job.

I'm 5 years in and way the fuck past done. If I survive next year I'm done. They are paying us a lot extra in some DISD (Dallas , TX) schools. I work in one of those schools. After this year I am done teaching I have no clue what to do but I know that I will die very young or be psychologically and spiritually crushed if I teach after next year. I already have many health issues physical and mental that began mostly when I started teaching. But yeah I'm checked out before the year even begins. All I want is to not be fired or written up.

All I can tell you is to listen to yourself. If you’re truly suffering mentally/physically, then you’re only harming yourself and others by staying. There are plenty of other jobs out there. Be smart and logical. Don’t do anything from an emotional state. Pray on it as well if you’re about that life. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

It was hard to sell my skill set - I wanted to manage a thrift store but they were republican and hated teachers. The bosses out there hurt people physically when they think they don’t belong. Lots of stigma. Good thesis in this vid, Taylor hits the nail, no matter how much i did....

Taking the larger view somehow the onus needs to be taken off of the teacher, since anyone who’s not psychotic ought to be able to sense that the teacher, no matter how gifted and dedicated, simply cannot learn anything for the student, as the student must do their own learning. This is kind of like mainstream religion being in such steep decline because the focus has been placed on the clergy, while treating a the laity as non-entities. So is it any wonder that the only cults which seem to be growing are those run by volunteers and which have no professional clergy? So even if some of these groups may actually be pernicious at least they aren’t going through their death rattles like mainline Protestantism. Likewise with education, it probably needs to be automated to individualize instruction so the onus is placed squarely on the learner, and not some supposedly learned teacher figure who is expected to do it for them. And then if there is a continued desire for having a day care component to education that function could be performed by day care workers who will not be held to blame for the failure or lack of motivation of the students, who will be thrown back on their own devices, to sink or swim. The current system is really much the same except for the delusion that the teacher can do the learning for the kids, no matter how indifferent they may be and usually are.
